OT NBC's coverage of the olympics...

  • I haven't watched all of the coverage but I have seen most of it at night on NBC. I keep reading that NBC is getting hammered because most of the events at night are on tape delay and not shown real time live during the day. The only question I have is what is NBC supposed to do? Prime time in the US is 8:00-11:00 pm EST. London is 5 hours ahead of us where it is 1:00 to 4:00 am. What events should NBC be televising live during those hours in London. NBC payed hundreds of millions of dollars in rights fees, mostly for prime time viewing They have to show the big events or no one will watch. Where am I going wrong with my viewpoint?

  • i think most of the stink is that they don't show it live during the day to give people a chance to see it. The British Open is early and they show it live. March Madness is during the day. People make changes to watch it, here they don't even have a choice.

  • What people are upset about is that the things they want to watch(Michael Phelps vs Ryan Lochte and Phelps in general) are not played until 9PM EST at the earliest. The swimming finals start at 2:30 PM EST and Phelps and Lochte usually don't race until around 4 PM EST. Instead of showing it live, they save it for prime time. All the viewers already know the results before seeing it. Heck, NBC reports about what happened before they even show us the actual footage.

  • another thing is that nbc is selectively editing what it's broadcasting. for example, when they showed the us women's gymnastics team sweating out alli raisman's final floor score, what nbc didn't bother to show was that russia's reigning world champ had fallen flat on her face in her event and scored so badly, the gold medal was already ours...but by keeping that bit of information out, nbc was able to amp up the anxiety knob to create the perception that there was a lot more suspense than there really was...

  • Everyone in the world wants to watch the swim races live yet the retards at NBC couldn't figure it out.
They ruined it for every US citizen that watches the Olympics every 4 years. So millions have been trying to watch Phelps/Lochte/Franklin/Soni online.
They are the stars yet NBC can't see that.
    What a worthless company.

  • it's about time zones...as george bernard shaw said, england and america are two countries separated by a common language...and 5 hours...well, at least rio is only one hour ahead of the eastern time zone so we'll see more live competition in 2016

  • Also, don't let ESPN fool you with the time zone ordeal being the only reason. They did the same thing with the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. They are only 3 hours difference from eastern time. Events start at what: 8 am local time? That would have been 11 EST. What time do they typically finish? They don't run to late. They saved all the events in the winter events and taped delayed them for primetime. They had no reason to.

Who's everyone? People that don't work? I don't get it. If one of my crew was found watching swimming live I'd bounce his ass out and he'd have plenty of time to watch it forever.

oh come on indy. people make time to watch events i mentioned above, whether by stealing company time or taking days off or calling in sick, whatever. i know plenty of people who watch the british open and watch the opening rounds of march madness. i also know plenty of people who are on this site right now who have jobs.

Booms...my point is that they're the minority. I know more that can't watch, far more in fact than those that can make time. From a business decision point of view I'll make the same one NBC did.

I also know many people that cannot stay up to 10:30-11:00 to watch the events they want to see that are tape recorded for prime-time.

Hey, if the ratings are there and people are tuning in to watch someone who won a gold medal 10 hours ago do it on tape delay, so be it. I just know that I am not one of them. I saw that Gabby Douglas won a gold at 3:00 or whatever....was not about to wait up until 11:30 to see if the internet was lying to me.

Also, if an american did not win the gold, I would guess ratings may not be as great. Not many people would tune in to see 2 russians place 1-2, so I think NBC got a bit lucky with Gabby winning.

Are the Olympics fixed to allow Americans to win to maximize TV ratings?

Have to agree here. I just worked 70+ hours in 5 days....not the norm, but had to be done.

Your life should revolve around your work. Family first, work second, and Olympics...well that's a little ways down on my list! Too much tolerance these days....

I have ATT cable, so I dont know what other companies offer. I have an Olympic Basketball channel, a soccer channel, a 3D channel (not in my package), and an everything else channel. The everything else channel bounces around so much that just when you get into it, they switch events. I would rather have 3 everything channels and be able to switch when they lose my interest. The soccer and basketball are mostly a click and a click out.

If you have satellite or cable. I've got a Toshiba Excite tablet with an Nvidia Tegra 3 video chip which is supposed to be a decent one. And NBCOlympics.com plays like the guys are streaming it are on Quaalude-absolute slow motion. I haven't had any luck watching there.

It's been solid for me. Still sucks that I can't watch live on the TV without hassle.
