BTW there has been a favorite guitarist thread running for a few months now. It's a few hundred posts long.

Hendrix was the most influential, and probably the most talented, but his music was uneven.

I base this on the riffs and solos they created. Van Halen would be high on my list too.

1. Satriani - complete package: skills, soul, knowledge, song-writing. Unbelievable talent.
2. Eddie Van Halen - innovated with techniques and styles never before seen. Influenced almost every rock guitarist afterwards. "Changed the guitar world as we know it", no question.
3. Tie: Steve Ray and Hendrix - very similar styles of soul and skill, but I'm partial to SRV because he had so much FIRE in him.
Tough to pick a top 3, because there are so many more being left out, but that would be my list.

OK, let's go in a different direction.
Even though I have been to a ton of rock concerts over my lifetime, and I still enjoy cranking it up every now and then (even at my advanced age) I am going to dismiss rock guitarists from my list, for a simple reason:
When viewed against guitarists in other musical styles they aren't that talented. Rock music is a simple medium, hence almost anybody can learn to play it. Doesn't mean it's not enjoyable, it just means you don't need a degree from Berklee in order to play it. Hell, you don't even have to know how to read music to play it.
To be sure, the guitarists are fun to listen to, and if one wanted to do a list of best rock guitarists then I'm all in.

(honorable mention: Christopher Parkening, Norman Blake, Leo Kottke, some crazy black guy who played lefthanded)
