Official Penn State Freeh Report Discussion Thread

  • 2nd mile people (Matt Millen) probably know. Don't know if the NCAA can or will due anything about this, ethics might come into play if not LOIC, but they are going to go bankrupt with civil liabilities.

There is one at every party, thought that's why you invited me!

  • Couple of things I have. 1. I don't see how anyone can still think this isn't an NCAA issue. Freeh clearly stated that this was done to protect the image of the university. Protect the image for what? To not lose recruits and miss out on any post season ban. So it looks to me that it was covered up to not create a competitive disadvantage. That's all NCAA.
    2. I haven't read the report, but whatever happened to the part about the disciplinary actions, or lack thereof, towards athletes? There was a media leak about this being possible. Just wondering if the report mentions that.

  • If this isn't the ultimate example of loss of institutional control I don't know what is.

All the PSU fans who refer to Woody as Punchy or bring up his one act of indiscretion in a sea of good, well...time to come to come get some, you can't be hypocritical now.

Nike takes St Joe's name off of their child care center.........

The statement from Nike CEO Mark Parker, via Darren Rovell:

I have been deeply saddened by the news coming out of this investigation at Penn State. It is a terrible tragedy that children were unprotected from such abhorrent crimes. With the findings released today, I have decided to change the name of our child care center at our World Headquarters. My thoughts are with the victims and the Penn State community.

  • more delusional PSU fans. This comes from Interfraternity Council President Vincenzo Lizza. A president of fraternities, a leader on PSU campus.......

“If you’re a Penn State student, you know what it means to be a part of Penn State,” Lizza (senior-energy, business and finance) said. “This is just a little glitch as we go on through the years and continue our tradition.”

A LITTLE GLITCH!! That's all this is....A LITTLE GLITCH.

What if this would have been Ohio State....what would the talking heads like Matt Millen be saying?

If it were OSU, there would be an E$PeeIN OTL, prime time special, a special edition of $I, and every other OSU hating, jackass, wannabe scoop Jimmy Olsen running around out there writing a new, speculative, scathing story everyday for the next 12 months! "OSU STEALS THE LINDBURGH BABY! Or how about "ELVIS SEEN HIDING OUT AT THE WHAC!" The way OSU was treated in the national media was nothing short of appalling. News? Yes, absolutely. Front page, new speculation every night? Hell no!

You want to see real scandal and absolute corruption? No, it doesn't include some guys getting some discounted tattoos and the HC handling it his own way and getting caught not telling the NCAA about it. One only needs to look no futher than State College, Pa. This is the biggest tragedy in the history of organized higher education, let alone College Football history.

PeeSU ....bend on over and get some! Smug assed idiots!

he stated that he still loves joe pa and is saddened that one event could tarnish a life.

anyways mark may allegedly just went on a tirade on sporscenter i guess.

i still dont get some of these penn state fans, "well there's still not actual proof."

i dont think some of those idiots would believe joe pa did any wrong unless they had video evidence, his ID, his mother to confirm his ID and a voice recognition system. unreal

  • I'm just glad JoPa got fired before the end of the season. If he had been able to finish out his season on his terms and gotten carried off the field like a hero to the adoring applause of the crowd (which he certainly would have). I cant imagine how much extra pain and anger the victims would be going through right now.

Millen would be outside The 'Shoe right now overseeing its dismantling if it were Ohio State in the same boat along with all the news outlets you mentioned.

Joe Pa supporters remind me of OJ Simpson supporters. You arent going to change their minds so why bother trying.

Perhaps, but I don't think so. Millen spoke positively about Jim Tressel during and after his fall from grace.
It seems to me that Penn State is getting hammered on just about every news show there is, in and out of the ESPN network.

We can certainly agree to have differing opinions, but if this wasn't Millen's alma mater, I think his viewpoint would be quite different. I'm surprised you don't agree with that.

    Hey Razor,

I do agree that Millen, who works for the Big Ten Network, is giving PSU a pass when a pass is not warranted.
I disagree with the suggestion that he would dump on OSU if a similar situation occurred at OSU. I could be wrong.
I saw May's rant. Anyone who has watched him over the years can predict just how outraged he was. In this case, it seems appropriate.

  • I'm also curious to know just how much money was donated to this "charitable organization" from Ped St during this period. That would be interesting to know

When did he start working for BTN? I always see him on ESPN/ABC broadcasts.

Ya, I think he would dump on ANY other team, not just Ohio State, I was just using OSU as an example because it's our team, but he (and just about anyone with any common sense) would be talking about severe NCAA penalties for any team whose head football coach, president, and ad were all in a conspired coverup of 14 yrs of repeated child rape to save their football program and university's reputation. I think he's just letting his alma mater get the better of his judgment in this case.

Matt Millen and the Paterno family need to stop insulting our intelligence any further. Matt Millen "If Joe was here today, i'm sure he'd accept the blame." He didn't accept blame for 14 years so what would make him accept it now? The sick hero worship still going on. What the majority of us knew what the reality of this whole thing was was all confirmed so the defenders need to just keep their' mouth shut

  • Interesting take on how Penn State should fear the DOE as they can refuse to allow a school to provide certain scholarships: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/department-education-could-bigger-threat-penn-state-ncaa-203019718--ncaaf.html

"In fact, before 2007, the report directed by the board of trustees, says the officer in charge of compliance was unaware of the actual duties he and the university were to perform to be in compliance with the law. In an email to his supervisors, the officer alerted them to the problem, stating "We could get hurt really bad here."
While the university began to provide training to staff and officers post-2007, Freeh's report states that awareness and interest in compliance with the law "remained lacking throughout the university."
Training sessions, the report notes were "sporadic" and "not well attended."
As of November 2011 — 21 years after being signed into law — Penn State's Clery Act policy was still in draft form and had not been implemented."
