Ohio State vs Florida game thread

Of course Florida was the 7th or 8th best team in the sec, that's why they were playing a 6 loss B1G team in Ohio State. You act as though we won the B1G this year.

Also, i'm sure the mighty Paladins of Furman must have recruited tons of sec speed when they almost pulled of the upset over the Gators this year. grumble

Pointing out florida's struggles this year and them being able to beat us with comfort only shows how bad the big ten is and how we have taken advantage over the years of playing in the big ten.

What would our record be in the sec in the last 10 years. I am willing to bet barely over .500 in conference play.

Look at the big ten's bowl record in the last 10 years.....enough said.

All I know is this.....the sec keeps winning national titles year after year after year. We can't compete with them and the two bcs title games and the blowouts against them confirm that.

This has more to do with oversigning than anything else. When you basically get to erase your recruiting mistakes once a year ANY school will gain a huge advantage over time.

I know I am. But when I look across the country I don't see some monopoly on speed in the SEC. The SEC's top teams are fast, but so are all top teams. OK State, Oregon, Michigan, Clemson, etc are all fast and in other conferences. And the middle of the road SEC teams aren't any faster than other teams. Florida wasn't fast, we just had the same problems we've had all year. I think it's just media hype. The SEC is the best conference, but speed isn't the reason.

Let's keep the word "speed" out of the conversation. The elite teams whether they are in the SEC, BIG 12, PAC 12, have great football players....whether they are fast or quick or strong or great vision or whatever other quality you think a great player has these teams have them. OSU has some of those players but we don't have nearly enough. That's the only point I'm trying to make. Did we have bad coaching in 2011?? absolutely!! However, we have a talent gap that needs to be closed. Guys like Sweat, Sabino, Klein, Moeller, Goebbel, Bellamy, Hale, etc. are not even on the 2 or 3 deep on an elite team. How about that 5-star tackle Shugarts or our receivers? We don't have enough good football players and that's the first thing Meyer needs to correct and that's upgrading our roster!!

  • If the supposed advantage was the UF linemen then yeah, I'll agree with that, for this season. Most games this year OSU's linemen were handled. It wasn't just this game. It was the whole season. It should not be a surprise to anyone.

Meyer likes the players that are here, and has said so on several occasions. OSU is not broken, and we can win here. He has said that a few times. This was a bad year and IMO is not indicative of the players UM will have to work with. Despite the NCAA hammer the future looks bright.

The bashing of the old regime can stop now. Their reign is over.

Heres to the coming season making everyone forget this one.

Agreed, then start adding in better paid assistants and we start to have a more plausible explanation as to why the SEC is dominating. But I agree, oversigning is the biggest reason, which incidentally allows you to keep the fastest athletes.

  • Meyer is going to build Ohio State back up again. It will take some time but I am confident of his coaching staff. This past staff was terrible and they are gone. Thank you Jesus! SEC is better than Ohio State right now in the trenches. OSU defense is alot better than the OSU offensive line right now. Meyer will get his recruits and he is going to tear up the Big Ten conference. Offensive line is going to get overhauled a lot next season. I cannot wait for next season. You are going to see a night and day change in this team. I feel sorry for the juniors who are going to be seniors for next season.

Wait, was Arkansas faster than us last year? Who won that game?

I agree with AllDay. Lack of speed did not lose this game for us. Lack of execution did.

I will say this I think Florida looked quicker on defense but remember this is a team coached by Jim Bollman and he makes our o-line look painfully slow along with slow developing plays.

  • I didn't post much today as I really just sat in my recliner and observed without getting too overly emotional like I usually do. My expectations were low for this game given the coaching staff that we have. I expected to lose this game today and here are a few reasons (that we also saw play out on the field)...

    * Florida has superior players -- they have out recruited us for the past ~5 years thanks to Meyer being there during those years
    * Florida currently has a better coaching staff on their sideline than we had on ours
    * Florida essentially had home field advantage
    * Florida had no off-field distractions

And we saw everything play out...I was glad we came back and made it only a 1-score loss, not that it makes much difference, but I enjoyed watching the kids make that last drive happen so that they know they can do it in the future, and I thought Braxton overall did a good job throwing the ball with the exception of that one missed pass to Posey in the endzone -- definitely his area to work on along with pitching the ball on option plays and throwing the ball away when nothing is there.

Overall, our defense really didn't play all that bad -- I see a lot of people in the premium area ripping the defense apart...they only gave up 10 points and the first 7 was a result of some home-cookin' by the officials. That's pretty good given all the talent on that Florida roster. This loss is on the offense & special teams. The offense performed pretty much what is to be expected under Jim Bollman and Nick Siciliano. It looked like a monkey trying to fuck a football out there for the vast majority of the game until Florida went into prevent-defense on that last drive. And our special teams...wow. The fact that we haven't fixed all the problems with the special teams that have existed since 2010 is really disturbing, but I have a feeling it will get rectified this coming year since the ST coach for 2011 (Dick Tressel) is effectively fired after today along with many other assistant coaches on offense (Bollman, Siciliano, and Peterson).

All in all, let's be happy about a few things:

    * Urban Meyer is now running the show 100%
    * Jim Bollman has been fired
    * Nick Siciliano has been fired
    * There will be attrition during the off-season and we'll get rid of some dead weight
    * Spring Ball is only 12 weeks away

We had one guy last year that continually bailed the Jim Bollman offensive line out and he was 6'5" 240 lbs and that was Pryor. He would stiff arm his way out of sacks his entire 3 years.

Missagain fan, your Missagain team is just fortunate you play Virginia Tech. You would have lost to Florida if you guys played this year. It is not a myth that the SEC is faster than the Big Ten. Meyer said it in his press conference numerous times when he took this job. All the Buckeye fans can go back to the transcript and prove me wrong. I cannot wait for this new coaching staff to coach these players next season. Meyer will recruit his players. I feel sorry for the juniors who will never play in a bowl game again for Ohio State. Thanks for taking the easy and greedy way Gene Smith. Hope it was worth a fat pay raise for yourself and Gordon Geek

Meyer said playmakers is what OSU is missing. You don't need world class speed to be a playmaker. Some of you have swallowed the speed thing hook, line, and sinker. All teams have speed, but not all teams have playmakers.

Thanks -- yeah I would've offered to completely move Jim Bollman out of the WHAC all by myself if it had meant he was gone before this season started along with Nick Siciliano.

This is correct....playmakers!!! If all it took was speed we would just bring guys in from the track team. We need playmakers in abundance on both sides of the football.

You need to put playmakers in posistion to make plays and Jim Bollman had no clue how to do that his entire stint at OSU. Let's face it when we won it was by defense and having better talent. JT could not gameplan when the talent was equal.

  • All,

Was not at my computer today during the game and so was not able to post during the game. I appreciated the comments on oversigning. They're valid. I appreciated the comments on playmakers, they're valid as well. I saw a little good and a lot of bad. Did Braxton look like he found an arm? Still need to work on the consistency, but the throws looked better. For the most part we were able to run the ball. But overall, we looked slow. If we take anything away from this, it's that speed can dominate a game. Lack of speed beat us on special teams, and that's where we lost the game. Give me fast players, and in the right system I'll give you playmakers. I look forward to a new season, and more importantly, a new era in Buckeye Football.

bucki - totally agree. Add to that Florida probably wanted this game more (Urban is not exactly revered anymore down here in Florida where it is tough to be a tOSU and big ten alum) and a couple of special teams plays, and the outcome is totally understandable. We MUST not blow this laugher of a bowl out of proportion and assign any real significance. Urban will deliver on the recruits we need to get tOSO back to an elite program - perhaps more consistently than we ever have!

  • I you watched the game, the difference was coaching and OSUs complete lack of playmakers.

This team has no outside threats beside Posey.

I was not impressed with Florida at all, OSU handed them the game on a frickin platter.
