"Our" Beer thread

  • I saw this on the Front Row and couldn't help but get thirsty! Of course I couldn't read any of the posts over there, so this is "Our" thread. Always interesting to hear what's been had by the readers of this board from around the country so lets hear it. To start it off with a bang, I'll chime in with the only good thing to come out of *ichigan...Bells Brewery. I have to cross into Missouri to buy it but it's worth it. What are you guys drinking lately?

  • I suppose it's only right to follow up a *ichigan brewery with one closer to home...Hoppin' Frog up in Akron is a force to be dealt with. My brothers brought some down on a visit recently and the Double Emperial Stout was outstanding.

Hoppin frog is good stuff! Every year in Akron there's an event called Blues and Brew, its about 50 microbrews from across the country who bring all their products.

Kinda like doing the world tour at the Lizard in a day...

  • Champagne of Beers! Miller HighLife bottles. Cleveland actually has 3 fantastic places for beer. Great Lakes Brewing Co., right around the corner from that Bier Markt (beers from around the world on tap), and Fat Heads Brewery. While all three of those places are fantastic, Im easily pleased, and a Miller product suits me just fine.

  • Livin' in SoCal, there are a lot of microbrewers doing some really good stuff. In no particular order, Stone, Alpine Brewing, Avery, Pizza Port, Russian River Brewery, and Firestone all come to mind. I love the IPA's, but all of these guys are making good pale ale's, wheat, porter, stout and whites. Good time to be a beer lover.

A friend from Ohio sent me a Bell's Hopslam. It's in my fridge waiting for a special occasion. He swears it's the best on earth.

  • Full Sail Brewing's Session Lager is delicious. Bell's Two Hearted is a great hoppy beer. My screenname has nothing to do with Milwaukee baseball.

  • I bought a Banana Bread beer at Giant Eagle....not sure why. I will tell you what, I opened that bottle, took a rip off of it, and pointed to the sky, and said "THANK YOU".....what a delicious Product!

I stand by Bell's as being one of the best I've had. Someone mentioned the Two Hearted IPA by Bell's, If you can get it...Do so. Also living in California and having a fondness for IPA have you had Bear Republic's Racer 5 IPA? Very good. For the Stout fan, and I am one, has anyone tried a Milk Stout? Had one recently from Ska brewing in Colorado called Steel Toe. Strange but a decent change of pace.

Thanks for the responses! I was worried we had a board full of Teetotalers!

I'm now up here in This State up North, and I will give them some credit... they've got a couple really good craft brewery's. Bell's is a huge one that is nationally renowned. Founder's Brewery our of G.R. also has some excellent selections (especially their seasonal varieties).

Forgive me Woody for supporting *ichigan companies.

Hopslam is pretty damn good if your tastes lean that way.

Stone Brewery is excellent and is possibly my favorite Brewer or option 1.a. after Rogue Brewery out of Oregon.

I have read rave reviews about Russian River's offerings, but they are not available anywhere here in MI.

  • I need to get out more.. I live in a small farm town in Illinois close to St Louis. The only beer mentioned so far that I have tasted is the Miller products by Chad.. I do drink some Samuel Adams every now and then.

Love a bunch of Full Sail products particularly their IPA. They make a Wassail over the holidays that is really nice.

Had the Banana Bread beer as well, and thought it was excellent. Not super nutty, not too sweet, with a really long and structured finish. Gonna have some more of that.

Love the Racer 5 as well, always have some of that in the fridge.

  • I'm really not a beer connoiseur, (I just drink miller and bud light) but give me a beer to try that I can pick up from the store and I'll drink it this weekend. I prefere low calories if possible.

    Let's get it!!!

  • Kelly I'd start with the Sam Adams seasonal (Noble Pills right now) and a local brewery's everyday beer to get your pallet moving, sort of like dortmunder from Great Lakes. Guiness is a nice change of pace.

Then move into a Plae Ale, IPA etc. The IPA are really hoppy, so they can be bit of a shock.

    Beer if good!

BuckeyeBrewer have you (or anyone else still living in OH) heard of a little farmhouse operation in Lancaster called RockMill Brewery? I read an article about them recently and was thrilled to hear of the family owned/operated craft beer getting some pub.

Also, Bucki#17 you should try a Schlafly product. They're right there in St.Louis. Pretty good stuff.

And for Kelleyredd, I got my wife to drink Shock Top (Michelob product) which is a White Belgian Ale. I think it's light and very tasty. She adds an orange slice but that's not quite for me.
