They are right, taking down the statue does not help the victims. Therefore, they should give all of JoePas retirement/pension that his wife will get to these victims families. And sell that house that you bought for a $1 so people could not take it in lawsuits, sell it and give proceeds to victims. Start doing something to help those victims instead of bitching about this crap.

You want to talk about PROTECTION? How can a grown man, who was a father and a grandfather do nothing to PROTECT young children from being raped by the scum of the Earth? Put yourself in the shoes of the victims and their families before you talk about protection. Pathetic ass response dude.

You act like Joe watched him rape kids.
The family's reaction is appropriate. They believe Joe is receiving all the blame and is being portrayed as the only party responsible.
Unfortunately, we need a villain, and instead of Sandusky (who is the true monster), it has become Paterno.
The family finds that unfair.

He could have done more, so should have McQuery who actually saw it. It doesn't make Joe a rapist or the equilivant. However, in terms of the family, their defense of him is expected and reasonable.
They believe, and perhaps rightfully so, that others should be bearing the brunt of the blame. Whether that is true or not is up to whoever reads the evidence.
But they are his family and they will defend him.

I just don't understand how you can defend someone just because they are your family. There is right and wrong; and that's it! Just because you love your family doesn't mean that you have to agree with what they do. This is a definite case of right and wrong---and Joe Paterno was wrong. If this were my father, I would be horrified; and I would not defend him.

The family of the late Joe Paterno issued a statement Sunday morning after the school removed Paterno's statue from its platform next to Beaver Stadium.
Here's the entire statement from the Paterno family:
"Tearing down the statue of Joe Paterno does not serve the victims of Jerry Sandusky's horrible crimes or help heal the Penn State Community. We believe the only way to help the victims is to uncover the full truth. The Freeh report, though it has been accepted by the media as the definitive conclusion on the Sandusky scandal, is the equivalent of an indictment -- a charging document written by a prosecutor -- and an incomplete and unofficial one at that.
"To those who truly want to know the truth about Sandusky, it should matter that Joe Paterno has never had a hearing; that his legal counsel has never been able to interview key witnesses, all of whom are represented by lawyers and therefore unavailable; that there has never been an opportunity to review critical evidence which has not been made public; that selective evidence and the opinion of Mr Freeh is treated as the equivalent of a fair trial. Despite this obviously flawed and one-sided presentation, the University believes it must acquiesce and accept that Joe Paterno has been given a fair and complete hearing. We think the better course would have been for the University to take a strong stand in support of due process so that the complete truth can be uncovered.
"It is not the University's responsibility to defend or protect Joe Paterno. But they at least should have acknowledged that important legal cases are still pending and that the record on Joe Paterno, the Board and other key players is far from complete."These are similar comments to what the family has said about the need for due process, the lack of the full truth being revealed and the potential issues with the Freeh investigation and report.

Yes. I'd be horrified.
Embarrassment wouldn't even begin to define the feeling I'd have but I'd have a very difficult time ever looking the man in the eyes again, were he still alive.
You're talking about the rape of little boys. Somewhere along the walk of life, you're supposed to have learned that telling your boss isn't even something that should cross your freaking mind, at a time like that. There shouldn't even have to be a rule.
