  • I'm sorry if people don't want to here this, but I'm willing to give credit to Bill O'Brien. It sounds like he is trying his best with the situation he was put in. I think credit is due. Its a hard situation he was put in and it sounds like, right now, he is sticking it out. I think that is great. Hats off to him.

It is said that the measure of a man's character is how he responds to adversity. If that's true, O'Brian is off to a great start.

Adversity is going to be his 3rd season of a losing record in Unhappy Valley.

    Totally agree Indy.

For now he is a good guy, but let's see what he does down the road.

  • i agree he's handled this as well as can be expected but I'd expect nothing less from someone at his level. he needs his team and fans to know they're aren't throwing in the towel.

the thing that's gotten overlooked is that this isn't smu playing in front of 50,000 people. they were a 3rd tier swc program before ron meyer. they had football history, yes, but hadn't done anything within the prior 40 years until dickerson and james showed up.

but this is penn state. they will put 105,000 in that stadium even if they go 0-12. not rolling over and dying will be their way of flipping their finger at the rest of the world and telling us no manner what we do to their program, we can't kill their spirit. the sanctions will cripple them but won't kill them. it's comparable to hiring a bad coach...to what bill callahan did at nebraska...to what tyrone willingham did to washington...within 3 years, their replacements had them back in a bowl. if bob can prove to be a good game coach, psu will bounce back and faster than most programs would, just as we would. but if he's a bad game coach on top of these penalties, that's a double whammy.

with the bowl ban, they will have a hard time competing for the 4* and 5* but they can still compete with the purdues and northwesterns and rutgers and syracuses and boston colleges and pitts for the 3*'s, kids who can still be competitive players. but with only 65 scholarships, which puts them fcs-level, there's virtually no margin for error. they can't afford kids who are character or academic risks. it means they can't carpet bomb, i.e., sign 25 kids each year and hope 10 (40%) pan out. they will only sign 15 of which 10 (67%) must pan out. bob's going to have to recruit with laser-eye accuracy. if he can do that and be a good game coach, they can still be a competitive football team.
