Q&A; Matt Wilhelm

  • Matt was an aggressive defender while wearing the Scarlet and Gray from 1998 to 2002 and that was never more apparent than in his senior season when he led a stellar defense in tackles with 121, including 19.5 for loss. He was a cornerstone of a defense ranked 3rd nationally against the run (77.71 ypg) and 2nd nationally in scoring (13.07ppg) and earned All-American honors and a National Championship ring for his efforts.

  • Matt should get his name put up there with all the other great tOSU LBers. I don't think he gets enough credit for just how good he was. Especially the 2002 year.

That first defensive play sticks in my mind when McGahee ie tackled in the bqckfield and Wilhelm gives the "suck it" sign to the Miami fans in the end zone. Loved it!

He twisted, poked, and drove the '02 team to a Championship that year, and really shed the media's claim that the Buckeye would be blown out, by the Overpowering Miami Offense! Wilhelm, led that "Blitzkrieg" hammer

  • It's just hard to believe a decade has blown by already.

Will Smith and K2 exchanges punches to the head really helped to set the tone IMO.

  • Chad, I do agree. Will Smith was awesome that year and that game.
