Qb Recruiting Delimma

  • Ok, the QB's were recruiting in the class of 2013 were:

Malik Zaire, Jt Barrett, The kid who looks like the kicker from the Waterboy (I think his name is Bailey), Trubinsky, and Chavas Rawlins from Pa. These are all good kids, but Zaire committed elsewhere, Barrett is really interested in Baylor, The Kicker took us out of his top 3, Trubinsky is a universal 3-star (not that its a bad thing) and still needs to work on his mechanics. But, I really like his running abilities. As for Rawlins, I dont know much about him.

But, for the class of 2014, there are some real studs. We are getting a lot of interest from QBs like Drew Barker from Kentucky, William Crest, and even this kid named Jordan Severt from Texas (who reminds me of Andrew Luck).

Now we do have a slight need for Qb (Braxton will be a sophomore this season, Guiton a junior, and Cardale Jones a freshman), but do you think taking 2 qbs this year would be a reach, especially if some of the higher ranked qbs decide to go elsewhere?

  • I have been wondering about this as well. I think the fact that Guiton has really taken big strides to being a good qb has lessened the need for 2 qbs this year (especially with what is believed to be a smaller class)

  • Just my 2 cents, but I think having Jalin Marshall in this class gives Urban the flexibilty to sign a single scholarship QB in 2013. That would give the Bucks 4 scholarship QB's and the multi-dimensional talents of Marshall.

Thats true. He will provide good depth, especially if Braxton goes down (he had a history of injury problems in high school). I feel safe this year bc we still have some Cardale and that baseball player who came back. But, I do have an understanding of taking at least one qb just for security. I think Trubinsky will be that one.

Personally I think we take one. It sounds to me like we're really targetting JT Barrett as "the guy" and maybe Trubisky. I know the staff wants to see Trubisky throw in person. I suppose it's possible they take two.

    +1. I agree 100%.
Braxton will be a SO, but I believe Guiton (JR) has really improved to possibly be a solid backup QB. As for Jones, I think he will be the starter for 2 years after Miller leaves.
I think w/ having Marshall in this class, who can play QB if a 4th string QB is really needed that bad, also limited scholarships & Guiton improving, points to us taking only 1 QB for 2013.

I honestly think we should only have 1 QB per class but we only got 3 current QB's on scholarship.
Taking 1 in this class, hopefully Barrett, if not, then maybe Bailey visits and puts us back in his top 3 group.
I think if we would take Bailey, he would come in as an ATH.

I think its a high possibility that they take 3 qbs in the next 2 years. You never know when qbs are going to leave bc of lack of playing time, and whos not going to develop as expected. I think Trubinsky is going to go to camp and have to earn his offer the way they wanted Zaire to do. I think in the end Barrett is going to stay in state and we're going to take either Trubinsky or Rawlins, then take 2 next year. s

I like Marshall as an athlete, but him as a qb would be a questionable move. When he comes in in 2013, Philly Brown, our current Percy Harvin hopeful, is going to be a senior and Guiton is going to be gone. Its just a risk having just 2 athletes and 3 qbs on the roster, especially if the two are unproven

Marshall should be a freshman, when Guiton is a Senior.
Guiton was redshirted. Because Guiton is going into his Junior year as Marshall is going into his Senior HS season.
When Guiton is a RSR, Marshall will be a true Frosh.

  • You're right. I had my numbers mixed up. Ok, that makes more sense now. Thanks for the correction

  • After Guiton has done well improving in Spring practice, Meyer seems be content taking only one QB this year--JT Barrett is still the main target. But Meyer seems to like Trubisky over Bailey for some reason. From what I've seen, I'd personally give a slight edge to Bailey but, then again, what do I know?

  • With only 3 on scholarship, our depth at QB is a concern. There's not a lot of margin for error, especially since the QBs carry the ball a lot in Urban's spread option and Braxton's proven he's fragile. We need at least one 2013 QB. By the time these guys get on campus, Braxton will be going into his junior year. We need to be ready for unplanned contingencies--hardship, injury, academics. While it's encouraging to hear Guiton's coming along--how many of us were screaming like raving lunatics last season for him to get a shot over Bauserman?--he's had his RS year and will be gone after 2013. While I can see Marshall running some wildcat ala Teddy G in the 2004 Alamo Bowl win over Okie State when Troy Smith was suspended and Justin Zwick was playing on one leg, I don't see him throwing the ball. He'd be a safety valve and nothing more.

I think we will sign one guy who's a QB and only a QB (Barrett, Trubisky) and then a guy who's a great athlete but more of a project as a QB who, if he doesn't cut it there, can still see the field at WR or DB, someone like Tra'Von Chapman or Jevon Harrison. That means #2 is more likely to be an Ohio guy who commits late.

We've seen this scenario played out before: Zwick was the stud QB who committed early, while Troy the project who committed late and actually played special teams as a freshman.

I really like Chapman. I think hes a better athlete than Chapman in terms of throwing ability as well as his overall dynamic, but Id think it would be awkward if he went to any school other than the one his dad is coaching at. Lol

  • Id be satisfied w/ just 1 QB this year (seeing as we need some other positions filled). I think it ends up being Trubisky and then next year we take 2. We needs playermakers at WR and Oline. Wouldnt hurt to snag a few more DBs either.

IMO he has to many stars.

  • It'll be interesting to see how this news plays out, i.e., how fast do Trubisky, Bailey, and Chapman move on, ala Zaire, who knew he wasn't on the short list and didn't see any point hanging around waiting to be told what he already suspected--that he wasn't wanted.

I'd still like to see Chapman added as an athlete who can play WR (like his daddy did for OSU) or DB if QB doesn't work out. I have been a fan of his for a long time, saw him as far and away the best in a QB class that's unusually deep for Ohio. Unfortunately, I see him going Arizona, Pitt, Illinois, Northwestern or WVU, unless he decides to stay home and play for Darrell Hazel at Kent State, where his father's the WR coach.
