  • I understand the angst against the oline recruiting philosophy during the JT/JB tenure. The one point never brought up is the opportunity cost of taking more Olinemen. If you take more olinemen, that means fewer players at other positions. Since olinemen only play oline and usually don't move to other positions or play much on special teams, it is clear the philosophy of fewer olinemen is so more players who can contribute in more ways are selected. I think you see more DB/lbers taken. In the discussion of recruiting the oline, one must keep in mind and discuss the bigger picture. This is rarely done. Perhaps if more onlinemen are taken that might have meant no room for late additions to the class....Troy Smith? Donald Washington? Robiski, or lesser known recruits, Chekwa, "Omar" Jenkins,.... . There is a tradeoff no one seems willing to discuss. Everyone just wants to bash Bollman.

Way to kick the (Boll)man when the team is down. For years, I and several others had been branded as outcasts for simply stating what was obvious even then: Bollman sucked! Now that Bollman's benefactor has been banished, everyone is taking shots at him. I have no sympathy for the man who was largely responsible for the Buckeyes' oft anemic offense, yet this is old news. I am a little frustrated that Bucknuts only now has decided to join in the fray after defending the Buckeyes' braintrust for so many years -- presumably to avoid offending Saint Tressel, and affecting their "sources." With Tressel gone, the writers are now all too happy to point out Tressel's flaws. So much for journalistic integrity; but then again, Bucknuts is a blog and doesn't hold itself up as a source of objective news.

I agree with a bit of piling on. The entire bucknuts staff (other that Duane) largely held their tongues during the last 10yrs so as not to offend the Vest. Disappointng. I hope for better in the future.

  • No one has kicked Walrus when he's down.
Line play under him has been rotten since day 1.
And... has been commented as such.
He left YSU for the Bears and stunk in 1990.
YSU had great line play with coaches Asher and Kenaster and
4 titles after that. Tres should have had Asher at OSU.
Great success at running the ball.
The silver lining in all that has transpired, is that most of Tressels staff have gone or will be gone regardless of whether Luke stays.
Bollman, Heacock, D. Tressel, Hazell, and Mini Me (Sicilliano).
That's the one thing that was in Pryor's defense when it comes to not maturing or growing out on the field, No real QB coach. This is where Tres his exposed his ego problem by bringing in someone who had NO experience and
Terrel never listened too. Sicilliano can go back to filming or parking cars.

I tried to make that point last week. Seems as if the silent majority whom disapprove of the way the staff writers are now attacking a current coach are starting to speak up. No one on these boards is disagreeing with the underperformance comments/stories about the o-line and that the O-line coach is responsible for that same performance.

The exception taken by many is the manner in which the BN staff is doing it now.

The soluition to the problem now? I asked the staff to answer what they think should be done NOW to fix the problem, no answers from any of them, just more data on how bad things have been, a lot easier to regurgitate facts , then offer solutions.

    Here is my offerance.

01 Make Luke Fickell the tOSU head coach, with a three year contract, guaranteed pay. NOW. Put inot the contract very good bonus incentives for performance. If he screws up, you can still fire him, but this at least shores up the current recruiting "disaster" that is looming.

    02. Allow coach Ficklell to make any coaching changes he wants to right now, by issuing contracts offers that are guaranteed for three years. That allows for the ability to attract good coaches with, their financial security issues addressed up front. Again performance bonuses written in.

    03. BN staff writers get on THAT Bandwagon, every day, instead of bashing what already is in place.

Seems like those three things have a great deal more chance at doing some good, then whacking away at a situation that the current "interim" tagged coach has no ability to change.

tOSU, BOT's, Remove the interim tag from coach Fickell, and get out of the way. BN staff get onboard and throw out stories that offer ways to improve the program.

You know glass houses and all that. Be part of the solution.

No, not really, not like they are now, when it too late, and coach T is gone, really seems petty.

You know like commenting on how someone looks versus their capabilities.

Of course if all of the picutres posted are not in the best light of someone that automatically colors the dialogue towards the writers intent.... cheap journalistic shot.

Lets ask BN staff to start writing their stories with answers to the problems, now that THE problem has been so well stated by them, after all they are the experts.

C,mon BN staff, tell us what needs to be done to fix the problem, with the how to, clearly defined.

Yeah, guys, I am calling you out to give us an aswer., not to keep on rippin, unless you think continuing to rip is a/the solution?

That doesn't seem unreasonable. I do wish at a minimum they would give him a 2 year contract so recruits will know he's being given a legit chance. One-year interim is just silly IMO.

The only way Fickell can address both the coaching change needs and quiet recruits concerns is to be able to do so from a position of stability.

The only way to have a position of stability to work from, is a contract, that does not have "Interim" in it.

If Luke fails (possible, but doubtful, but unknown regardless), tOSU can still fire him, heck they have fired every coach they have had here with time left on their contracts. Big deal, give him a contract and a lot better chance to succeed than the mess he has been handed.

At least his hands won't be tied like they are now.

How can he recruit effectively right now, without all of his recruiting weapons/tools available to him.

How can he fix what he knows are coaching issues right now with his hands tied in regards to making changes. He is stuck with all the responsibility and no way to correct much of anything. it is as if tOSU wants to look like they are giving him a chance to succeed/compete for the job, but not really making it possible.

Once again the AD, and EGG, are not doing anything to make this into a workable win situation. They are looking long term and playing a stall game. their game will impact this season and the next several the longer they wait to act decisively. What a bunch of incompetent yahoo's.

They know exactly what they're doing, they have no intention of bringing back Fickell as the head coach next season. There will be no proclamation that he's the head coach nor would they waste the money on a 3 year contract.

Exactly the feeling I am getting by their (tOSU admin, BOT's) inexplicable inaction.

So maybe the rest of us can quit carping about the current coaching staff, because tOSU is already planning on bailing on all of them. Of course what else will they have to write about or respond to? Hmmmmmmm.

Now that is a recruiting factor.

Hey BN staff, why don't you chase that storyline?

Why aren't you railing for a decision by tOSU admin and BOT's to address those issues now. I would love to see some ink from you guys on those topics.

Let’s hit the people who are in position to make changes, or at least badger them inot answering questions as to why they are not doing so.

C,mon you guys are real good at piling on, show a pair, and get involved in making things better.

You are right, although I don't know about "many Bucknuts staff." Only Duane Long consistently called out Bollman's coaching and recruiting philosophy, straight out and directly. Others generally questioned the o-line indirectly by running stories about o-line depth and the like. While Tressel's playcalling was conservative, I don't know that it was more conservative than Nick Saban's or Brett Bielema's playcalling. It makes a world of difference when the o-line can consistently move the pile forward from the line of scrimmage and open up driveway-sized holes. Ohio State's o-line could not routinely do either from Year 1 of Tressel's tenure. It was obvious to the rest of the world, but apparently not to the majority of Bucknuts staff and members, based on the fierce defense Bollman critics faced. Now many of those who were silent or all positive all the time are jumping on the "crucify Bollman" bandwagon.

  • Well, in my humble opinion, it's all relative.

Fade back to the Coop years (and I support Coop as an EX-COACH).....

Meatchicken (or some other stupid loss to a team that should never have beat us) prevented tOSU from playing for a championship. We wanted more...Coop was let go, and in the end - we got more with JT.

With JT we achieved MULTIPLE wins over TSUN (Woody, is no doubt, still smiling over that - then quickly frowning at the end result), MULTIPLE B10 championships/titles, a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, and a chance at two other national championships...

We have become spoiled children, in a sense...wanting more is one thing...that's natural...expecting it ALL the time (again, in my humble opinion) is another.

Now...with that said...Boll's has had his chances. I'm not too sure how much his "chances" were hindered, considering JT's conservative style. Perhaps JT PREVENTED Boll's from taking "some" obvious choices since JT's style was win with D. Then again, maybe not...so a needed change may be on the horizon...that's for the new coach to eventually decide, whether it be Luke, Urban (it will always be a legend) or whomever...

Myself, I'm also ready for a change - especially with the offense in general, but I'm not bringing torches and pitchforks to the argument. I sure don't want the D to suffer in exchange...

Food for thought, or crap to flush - doesn't matter to me, just my opinion.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it (but I've been wrong before)!
