Serious Question

I've got your back, Nut. Gave you a +1 because I couldn't agree with you more. I've said it before and I'll say it again: the Nebraska game was the most disappointing loss I can remember. We had those MFs beat, up by 21 halfway through the 3rd Quarter. They couldn't get their running game on track while ours was clicking on all cylinders and then Braxton got hurt, Bollman brought in Bowserman, and instead of sticking with the run and chewing up yards to run out the clock, Bollman panicked and started passing and it became three and out. It was Braxton's mobility that kept Nebraska's D off balance and Guiton would have been logically the next closest thing. Our DL got tired and Nebraska came back. As soon as Overthrow Joe came in, I threw up my hands and said, "That's it--ball game." He went 1 for 11 with 3 QB hurries and an INT. I swear if I'm on my deathbed muttering, "Why? Why? Why?" and no one understands what I'm whining about, that will be why.

Bollman handed Nebraska that win more than they earned it.

    + 1

Anything would have been better than putting in Bauserman. I hate saying that and I'm not trying to be mean but seriously!

I'd have rather rotated every single RB we had with Guiton back there and ran the wild cat every other play or hell....put John Simon back there to run some people over....anything but Bauserman.

Fickell said he did during the season. He was asked point blank in the presser leading up to (I believe) the Illinois game -- some girl during the presser asked him straight up "Do you have the authority to hire/fire" and he responded jokingly "Well, who would I have to ask, my wife?" and essentially nodded yes after some chuckles from the audience. I remember watching it live and thinking to myself as he said it "Well Fick, you just took full responsibility for Bollman's incompetence in both play-calling and personnel decisions" -- because up until that statement most people just assumed he couldn't fire Bollman and that's why Bollman was still on staff.

And Bearbuck, I agree 100% about the captains. I wasn't sure how big of a deal it would be pre-season in 2011, but we sure saw during and after the season that there was just no leadership at all on that team.

Wow.... I completely missed hearing about that!!

You know I didn't peg us to win every game last season....and my prediction at the time was an 8-4 or 9-3 season....I just thought that a 1st time ever head coach and a true freshman QB would make for a very challenging task.....and winning every game was just not realistic IMO...

But the not naming of captains IMO really set this team back. At the very least John Simon should have been named captain....and if I had been in Fickell's situation....I'd have named Miller at the least an assistant captain and captain of the offense. I'd have showed him that win or lose I have complete trust and confidence in his ability.

Just maybe it would have encouraged Miller to take that next step and maybe...it could have been all the difference. Either way...at the very least you'd have a leader on offense and defense and direction for the rest of the team to look to.

    Give us your upinion:

I am starving for football and having been watching some replays on the B1G network. It seems like they only show the teams beating Ohio State (its great to be on top).

As I watched each of the games closely it is my opinion these games were very winnable. In particular the Neb game. If we would have put Guiton in we win this game.

    What say you guys?

I don't think the offense is why we lost the Nebraska game. My belief is giving up 28 points defensively in the second half is why we lost that game. Bauserman can come in and just not screw up. If we hold on defensively and make a stop......we win.

    The defense quit.

Yeah, so many close games that could've / should've gone our way, but so many variables contributed to such a terrible season. So glad it's over, and this one's gotta be better!

That's a great point Gobucks....and no question about it the defense gave up way to many points when it mattered most. I agree with you 100%.

And I am generally of the mind that you must win with great defense.....but I do understand the other half of it and while a lot of times I disagree with what some people's philosophy is about this game....I'll say this cause I've said it 1000 times before....

With football being a game of momentum....when the defense does have a let down on a series or gives up some points...the offense has to make every attempt at catching back that momentum.

The offense doesn't have to score on those drives.....but they have to put some time on the field and flip field position. They can't waltz out there....throw 3 passes in less than a minute of playing time and then punt the ball away! They have to at the least sustain a drive, get a couple of first downs and pin the opponents ears back. That really gets the defense re-charged.

    Good observation though.

Gave you a + 1 on all your posts on this thread......good observations and a fun topic to discuss.

I've been bored outta my a$$ craving Buckeye football and thought the same things you did.

Plus....don't know if anyone saw this on Big Ten Network but I sure as hell didn't think MIke Hart was the number 1 running back of the 2000's! I found that laughable! He went 0-4 against his arch-rival....

Now I'm not saying he wasn't a great RB cause as much as we can't stand his ever-running motor mouth...the guy could run and I'd definitely have him in the top 10....just not # 1!

Thanks Bearbuck. I saw a few of those shows. I agree about Hart. I use to like the B1G network, but am seriously questioning some of stuff they say and do.

Razor did a great job of summarizing Fick having authority.

I'm not sure if the defense was tired or frustrated or both. As someone said earlier if we would have run the ball, used effective players and used good click management this game would have come out

I think that would've helped the defense. For sure. I just have a hard time blaming the QB for it. Yeah the playcalling was terrible. I did not understand why we were throwing the ball with a blowout lead and a defense that was fading. But i just feel the defense quit and in spite of not being helped offensively, they should;ve done better. We made Martinez and that fullback of theirs look like all americans.

You're right...you can't and shouldn't blame the QB. But I could see how you could blame the person who put him in the game....or....the person calling the plays like you mentioned.

  • You know, 6 of the 7 losses were by one score or less. When you think about the only one that wasn't, Cryami," that margin was only because of a meaningless TD scored by them with less than a minute to play. On 4th down to boot! We were down 17-6 and Brax fumbled when hit from behind on about their 30, or 35. Then, the kid from Glenville dropped a sure pick 6 when "Cryami" took over with about 6 minutes to go. What is the point here? Every game was winnable last season. Every single one! The team was missing that little intangible needed to gut it out and either hold on, or get that final score. Stuff they mostly had with Jim Tressel at the helm. Would this team have gone undefeated and won an NC if the scandal hadn't happened? It's hard to say. The defense was still very weak by OSU standards.

  • Joe Bauserman probably is a great guy. He became a convenient scapegoat and popular whipping boy and Gawd knows I've figuratively put the strap to his ass more than my fair share of times.

It's said that when a team's struggling, the most popular player on the roster is the back-up QB. Even when we lost our last four games, no one was calling Bauserman's name. It was Braxton or bust and everyone knew it.

I tried to bring you back up a few times. I didn't dv you, but I imagine it was just a mistake. That's generally the way I take unexplained downvotes on this site, anyway. I'd like to think all of us Bucknuts Buckeye fans have enough balls to argue points rather than just dv people for the heck of it.

Well, here's a +1 for you just for the hell of it. I don't get butt hurt over it, either. I don't think nutbuster deserved it, though. Strangely, the WTF monkey that shows up on your posts seemingly does get butt hurt by it, which for some reason is making me laugh right now, and that's worth many upvotes to me today. Rough freakin' day.

Thanks Zeus and UV back at ya. I can honestly say my dv can be considered precious and are saved for our friends (cough cough) to the north. The other day I butchered a count of how many seniors we were losing. Iowa was cool to correct me and then added to the post, making it a better thread. There are some awesome fans on here!

    Couldn't agree with you more!

Apparently The Big Ten Network is on board with celebrating mediocrity. No one can be exceptional....we all have to be equal.

Ohio State has had an exceptional program this past decade. But we don't want to showcase that...it's not fair.

Coach Tressel defeated his arch rival 7 straight years, won a NC and went to 2 others....won 7 conference titles and never once was considered Big Ten coach of the year. Interesting...John Smith went 8-5 in 2003 and won it. 2007 Ron Zook won it having a 9-4 record. In both of those years Tressel went 11-2 and took his team to the NC game in one of them.

And you know what.....big deal. It's just an observation that seems pretty obvious. When you accomplish those kinds of things you don't need no stinking reward to tell you what you did. But it is interesting trying to understand people's logic at times.

I think it was great and it was innovative what the B1G Ten conference did in regards to developing the concept....

But watching the channel I'm very surprised how successful it is.

    Sometimes it's just ok...

...and sometimes it's just plain pi$$ poor!

  • I think part of the reason that these games are replayed so much is because they are a contest. Rare is the blowout of the Buckeyes. If a team beats The Ohio State University football team the game usually isn't decided until the 4th quarter, usually late in the 4th quarter and sometimes in OT. It makes for an exciting watch even as a repeat. I agree. I have seen so many of these Buckeye losses and think "How in the hell did we lose this game?"

  • You rarely will hear DeNardo giving the Bucks any love. Probably comes from all the beatings he got from the Bucks back in the day. How he can take on a job with the B1G Network giving his insight and knowledge when the man went 59-76-1 as a head coach (8-27 at Indiana) is beyond me and leaves me scratching my head. confused
