Should we be concerned about the lack of size of our DEs?

  • Let me ask you this crystal...... Has Urban done anything like Tressel? As great of a coach and Tressel was, Urban is on a whole different level... you already answered your own question when you said "While at Florida, Meyer's LBers and DEs were for the most part prototypically sized such as Brandon Spikes who weighed in around the 250 range and Carlos Dunlap, Derek Harvey, Dominique Easley among others"

    /end of story.

I see the biggest threat to Urban's strategy as Wisconsin. Their style is probably the best way to counter SEC type speed and quickness. Run right at them with big powerful backs behind a huge line surging forward to wear the smaller defenders down.

True statement on this JAG. The only thing about Wisky though, is Bielma is a POS and doesn't pound the ball when it counts. They do it for a large stretch of the game, but then POS starts calling passing and crazy plays in the 4th qrt.

We all thought the same thing when Wisky played TCU in the Rose bowl. No way smaller TCU D-line can handle the big trees of Wisky. Well in the 1st half they brought the blitz on the weak side to negate some of that power and did real well in the run stopping game, But then later in the game, Wisky kept on pounding the ball softening the D-line up for TCU. I was thinking OK- keep pounding the ball Wisky. Then Bielma starts doing some stupid shit, and started getting 3 and outs bringing TCU back into the game. Only for TCU to take the lead and win the game.

  • Agreed. Good point.

  • against the bigger offensive lines like Wisconsins and what Michigan seems to be building will be the linebackers. Great linebackers will negate the size of the defensive line.

  • Weve got the best damn coach in the land and your worried about Saban's recruits? First of all OSU's D-line was stacked BEFORE Urban got here. Now he's making it downright deep and scary. I don't care what the 'prototypical' size is in the NFL,SEC, B1G, or anywhere else, Urbs knows what he's doing and he's getting the best D-linemen in the country, getting who HE wants. As for the LBs, I've noticed he's going after all the best OLBs in the country and at first it seemed like he was just stacking the same position on top of each other. Then I realized he's going for all-out speed at LB, taking high caliber smaller outside 'backers and seeing how they fit into the system. The ones they want to move into the middle will get some weight put on them or bring up a defensive end. The future LB corps at OSU might not have as much knock down power as in the past but will swarm with speedy defenders to take 'em down. Its like comparing the knockdown power of one 7.62by39 and three .223s. In the same amount of time they have the same effect. BTW sugarcrystal, are you really questioning OSU recruiting Adolphus Washington, Noah Spence, Se'Von Pittman etc.?
