Urban dropping some brutal honesty

  • We finally have a football coach that says what most of us are thinking anyway.

The roots to this type of communication sink deeply into the rich and furtile soil of Woody Hayes. Earl Bruce wasn't afraid to say what he thought either.

They called Tressel 'Senator' for a reason. Although I loved Tress, he sounded like he was running for re-election in every interview he ever gave.

I love the candor of Meyer and find it a refreshing change from a decade long era of nothingness from Tressel whenever he had a mic shoved in front of him.

Never liked Meyer when he was at Florida because of his arrogance and porcupine personality and I am sure the beat down he put on us added to it.However, always thought he was an excellent coach.

I find myself trying to get over the hump and like the guy a bit better since he has become our leader but honestly it is a struggle because he still sometimes comes across as a bit of a jerk.

Bottom lined I am thrilled we have him and I know I will get to love him a little more each time we kick Michigan and Wisky's ass!

I agree with you! I too have a little bit of a problem with his perceived arrogance, ( by me) but am sure that he will " grow on me" We surely needed a big change in our program, and we got what is probably the best change available, IMHO ! Go Bucks

Really good video...what building is Urban being interviewed in and is it open to the public?

I'm sure that was at the Woody...and they have tours.

    Hawk_eyes47

  • pretty sure Woody would have said the same thing about a bad team that was 6-7
I like his honesty and no bs

  • One thing for sure, Urban knows what it takes to win NCs. He has those great Florida teams with Tebow and Assoc. to compare against the talents of all future teams. So if that freshman or sophmore can handle the job better than the junior or senior then we make a change. How that will affect the team remains to be seen, but winning is great cure-all. I loved Tress, but it is apparent that his system will not work unless JT himself is here to oversee its operation. We are movin' on and movin' up.

  • he is just being honest.

  • If he really said it that way it's a poor move. You aren't motivating kids by taking shots at them on public and singling out others. You create discontent and divide. In person I have no problem with this type of motivation technique, in public you alienate players. It doesn't matter if it's true.

    AllDay28

  • We know that his comments are fairly accurate, but as well there are some guys on this team
that can ball, They need serious motivation, who knows if this nothing more than a motivational
technique or a true evaluation, or a little of both.

Listen to the video...it's not a big deal and he didn't single out one person. It is what it is and it's up to the kids to prove him wrong. He also stated that the recruiting ratings aren't very dependable and he's had top rated classes at FL flunk his program so the fact that this one isn't as good really means nothing until the pedal hits the metal.

    Much ballyhoo over nothing IMO.

  • Ok, I'm on my phone on the way to a client site so I'll listen to it later and then make a judgement.

  • Love Urban's directness and brutal honesty. If he considers this class to be not great, I can't wait to see when he gets a class that he does think is great.

    Urban_Meyer

  • Ya, I agree with Indy. Once you hear it in full context, he really didn't call anybody out, basically just said that if you just watch the film, the team looked terrible from last year, but he's going to wait until spring ball and try to give the kids the benefit of the doubt with regard to whether or not Braxton has playmakers around him that can help him. I thought it was accurate and fair.

And the piece on the recruits I didn't think was that bad in the context it was said in, either. He said he didn't think the class was "great". He thought they did well at specific position groups, but others are marginal, but didn't cite a specific position group, etc. that had "bad" recruits or anything like that.

    Razorback

  • He's a coach, he's not a senator. He is not supposed to sugar coat anything. That would be the last thing I would want to hear. And he's absolutely right. BM had no chance to do anything even if he was coached well. That OL was a total joke. You could see in every one of our loses, their D loaded the box, jumped the snap count, and was all over BM. No amount of sugar coating in the world could cover that up. I think his comments are right on. I don't see it as bashing players, its more of the truth as to what will happen if any player thinks that play will be acceptable anymore. And thank God, cause I personally cannot watch that type of piss poor performance. An offense that cannot even attempt to draw the D offsides is completely uncalled for at that level.

Agreed, we all got so used to Tressel's constant non-answers and platitudes that Urban's directness is sometimes a bit surprising but I've got no problem with it.

I think he will win, but sometimes he comes off as an ass

    It's called "keeping it real."

He will do the exact same thing with the kids on this roster. This way there are no suprises and these kids all know exactly where they stand within this program.

I think it is a breath of fresh air to be perfectly honest.

Love the Woody Hayes type intensity and the SEC experience of Meyers. No doubt it will take several seasons of recruiting to bring the talent to the level that Meyers envisions. A lot of guys recruited from the pre-Meyers era will see little playing time once Meyers has his way with the type of players he needs to reach the top of the football world. Right now, other than Braxton, there are no offensive backs or receivers that opposing defenses truly fear.

    flash5

  • he wants to win, i want to win, you want to win, now let's get the kids wanting to win. I was begging for some offensive against mich. st., penn st. and purdue , so it's his job to win games, go do it!

Maybe that is his way of getting them motivated.

or his way of getting players to eventually transfer and open up more scholarships for next year's recruting class.

Its only Feburary...he hasnt even gone through spring ball yet. He hasnt coached one player on the field yet. I hope he is making this statement as a motiviational tool to help the young players on offense get better. Other then that I see no need to slam the players in public in Feburary.

He says that his only basis for comments is the film from last year. Not in person observations of the team yet. He commented that he'll know what his expectations for the season after spring ball.

I think all that is his way of letting the players know the preparation and execution he saw from last season is unacceptable and they all have a chance over the next couple months to show him what they can do. Letting people know where they stand and giving them a chance to do something about it is fair, not mean.

I disagree. "Keeping it real" isn't something you can control with an on/off switch. It is a way of life and it is exactly who Urban Meyer is. I love it!

I am tired of non-answers and question dodging we got in the past. Listen, I love Tress and what he did here, but this new regime is the breath of fresh air this fan base, the players and the University desperately needed.

  • Hmm. I think our lack of talent, good but not great recruiting class and marginal players will dominate the Big Ten and win championships over the next few years with Meyer at the helm.

It's sounds harsh and it's a far cry from Tress' politically correct, say-nothing responses, but I suspect he's trying to rally the troops.

Almost all of our losses were by 7 points or less. With good coaching we could have gone undefeated. Even the Miami game would have been in reach.

We may not have an Alabama caliber team right now, but I suspect we are one of the deepeset in college football talent wise.

I think I agree with AllDay. But I am not a coach and sure what really motivates 18-26 year olds.

I suspect Urban is pointing out situations like Bauserman. Maybe the Oline situation as well.

He might also be trying to temper expectation across Buckeye nation and with rivals. Under sell, over deliver.
