Weight Rooms; tOSU v PSU

  • Feels like a slow day coming, soooo....I saw the Bucks' room a few days ago, but just this morning - snooping behind enemy lines - I saw the PSU article. Give 'em a look see.

Coach Rick Court gives a video tour of the Bucks' facility

It would not be unreasonable to say that, despite the Penn State football program being completely stripped down and rebuilt in the matter of a few chaotic months, the biggest change is the new strength and conditioning program implemented by Craig Fitzgerald. Penn State contracted with South Carolina fitness training company Sorinex to overhaul the weightlifting and training facility, and the results are now available to the world

  • I am not a weight guy so I know nothing about all the equipment. They both look nice but tOSU's looks like an athletic club, while PSU's like high school's cinderblock lockerroom. I love the Train Like An American Soldier sign. Good inspiration.

  • I recently joined a new gym and have been extremely impressed with the "hammer strength" line of equipment that uses the stacks and keys as opposed to the free weights. I'm old school, pushing 50 yrs old, and I will say you can really save a good deal of time as well as wear and tear on the lower back, and improve safety by not messing with free weights.

These "machines" have come a long way since the old line of "universals" or "nautilus" back in the 1980's. While I'm by no means as strong as a college football player and not really looking to "max-out" so to speak, I'm not even hitting half stack on most of these machines with my sets of 12.

I'm surprised that neither TOSU or Penn St. went this route.

Most machines blow! Unless you're so broken down that you just can't do free weights, machines are a poor substitute. The problem is that many people use poor form of try to lift too heavy. I will agree that machines are great for older people. The only kind of Hammer Strength machines I've ever seen use free weights rather than a weight stack. If you really want to save your low back, try the Reverse Hyper-Extension. This is by far the best thing ever made for the lumbars. I highly encourage anyone with lower back pain to find a gym with one of these.

Dude this is not true. I've been in both facilities and I can tell you that PSU's is nice.

The Buckeye weight room is tremendous, but the PSU one and the locker room is nothing to sneeze at.

If I were a recruit I would be taken away by both facilities.

    GO BUCKS!!

  • Dude, didn't I say they both look nice? The only remotely disparaging remark I made was that PSU's looks like a cinderblock locker room. Now, tell me that's not what theirs is made out of. It feels like a cave.

Dude quit while you are ahead. Unless you've been there you don't appear to know what you are talking about.

What you don't realize is that there is an entire wall that is glass panels from top to bottom, which isn't shown here in the article. So ahh no. It doesn't appear to be a cavern to me.

The Buckeyes weight room is the far more impressive of the two, but primarily cause I am a serious Buckeye fan and love the references to our military as mentioned by a previous poster. You can't help but get emotional/ connected to the program by being in the Buckeye weight room.

At any rate, the problem with PSU isn't the weight room. It's the rotten core and continued fawning over a guy that allowed coaches to abuse kids and did nothing. There remains a STRONG contingent at PSU that are willing to over look what happened and continue to believe that Joe Paterno was/is somehow the victim.

    Its ridiculous. no

My point is that this new line of Hammer Strength machines really raises the bar for this type of equipment. I had never seen or tried this make of machines before a few months ago, and they are really awesome. These would be unbeatable for football circuit training.

I'm not broken down and can still do free weights, but as you age, it does take a little longer to recover between sets and you need to be more cautious of injury. It's not good to be on a bench press if you are a little shaky, but its not really an issue with a machine. Thus, I would agree machines are better for the older crowd. I'll try the exercise you mention. Thanks for the tip.

I have not seen these new HS machines. The ones we have in my gym are all plate loaded. I like some of the HS line, but unfortunately, most of the ones we have are not useful.

I too am feeling the ravages of age. I have a physical job, and it's hard to even muster the energy to make it to the gym anymore. But I seriously can't envision myself doing an all machine workout until I'm in my 70's. You lose so much benefit going from FW to machines.

  • OSU's in nicer, no doubt. But the Penn State locker room wasnt bad either. I actually think my gym is nicer than Penn States though haha.

Also, love the American Soldier tribute too...
