I recently joined a new gym and have been extremely impressed with the "hammer strength" line of equipment that uses the stacks and keys as opposed to the free weights. I'm old school, pushing 50 yrs old, and I will say you can really save a good deal of time as well as wear and tear on the lower back, and improve safety by not messing with free weights.
These "machines" have come a long way since the old line of "universals" or "nautilus" back in the 1980's. While I'm by no means as strong as a college football player and not really looking to "max-out" so to speak, I'm not even hitting half stack on most of these machines with my sets of 12.
I'm surprised that neither TOSU or Penn St. went this route.

I am not a weight guy so I know nothing about all the equipment. They both look nice but tOSU's looks like an athletic club, while PSU's like high school's cinderblock lockerroom. I love the Train Like An American Soldier sign. Good inspiration.

Dude, didn't I say they both look nice? The only remotely disparaging remark I made was that PSU's looks like a cinderblock locker room. Now, tell me that's not what theirs is made out of. It feels like a cave.

Most machines blow! Unless you're so broken down that you just can't do free weights, machines are a poor substitute. The problem is that many people use poor form of try to lift too heavy. I will agree that machines are great for older people. The only kind of Hammer Strength machines I've ever seen use free weights rather than a weight stack. If you really want to save your low back, try the Reverse Hyper-Extension. This is by far the best thing ever made for the lumbars. I highly encourage anyone with lower back pain to find a gym with one of these.

My point is that this new line of Hammer Strength machines really raises the bar for this type of equipment. I had never seen or tried this make of machines before a few months ago, and they are really awesome. These would be unbeatable for football circuit training.
I'm not broken down and can still do free weights, but as you age, it does take a little longer to recover between sets and you need to be more cautious of injury. It's not good to be on a bench press if you are a little shaky, but its not really an issue with a machine. Thus, I would agree machines are better for the older crowd. I'll try the exercise you mention. Thanks for the tip.
