What ever happened to..........

  • OSU star NFL players? I was talking to my boss(who is a sCUM fan) and I was using and abusing him on OSU's dominance over his squad and he brought up a very good point. It was: "OSU under Tressel, has produced a ton of first round busts." He brought up everyone who was highly drafted and pointed out how none of them are considered one of the best at their positions and all of them have produced at a level below what was expected. We then talked about OSU under Cooper, while they didn't win any championships, they produced elite first round talents such as Pace, Boston, Glenn, George, Clements...A ton of guys who at one time were considered the best or one of the best at their positions. Since Tressel recruited top 10 classes every yr, it makes me wonder if he really knew how to fully develop these guys? That is why I think some of the national elite skill players were hesitant to come here later in Tressels career. He wasnt able to recruit any of the highest rated skill position guys, I think for this reason. IDK, I guess Im pumped Urb is here and the Tressel firing might have been the best thing for the longevity of the program. I hope Urban can fully develop these guys and get us some superstar nfl guys so my sCUM boss will have nothing to say.

  • Holmes is very good, although a trouble maker, Malcolm Jenkins should be a pro bowler, Laurenitis is a star, Hawk is very good, Mangold is the best center in football. Will Smith is a phenomenal DE, Gamble is a great corner (just stuck in shitty Carolina). Ginn, although not a great WR is probably the second best returner in the NFL.

  • I know, I know. I said the same stuff to my boss... but seriously, none of those guys are anywhere near the guys Cooper put in the pros. there are a couple of HoF's in coop's classes. There are none in Tressels.

    Mangold will be a 7-8 time pro bowler, Holmes is a Super Bowl MVP, Santonio has the goods to be a top top tier WR but is just a bad character guy. Jenkins can be a serious Polamalu-esque Safety. The rest are just good pros.

  • I get it is awesome to say that some NFL player was also a stud at OSU. I also get it is good for recruiting but personally I don't care. I love OSU and could give a rats ass about the NFL if they are winning while at OSU I don't care what they do in the league. I love Troy Smith and he hasn't done shit in the NFL but he did decimate Michigan.

    as much as i loved jenkins intensity and ability to fire the team up, i dont think he is polamalu status. polamalu is a once in a decade kind of safety with speed, knock out hitting ability, hands, and the ability to just make plays. i hope i am wrong but i agree with mangold and holmes, good post my friend! go bucks!

    That's why i used -esque...Jenkins is a hard hitter that actually likes the game of football. You can't say that about most NFL players... thanks for the reply.

  • I would attribute the following first rounders to the Tressel era:

    2006: Hawk, Whitner, Holmes, Carpenter, Mangold
    2007: Ginn, Gonzalez
    2008: Gholston
    2009: Jenkins, Wells
    2010: Heyward

    The only "busts" on the list are probably Carpenter and Gholston.
    Ginn is a disappointment.
    Gonzalez and Hawk might be considered mild disappointments at worst given their draft status, but they have been good pros overall.
    Whitner has been solid.
    Holmes, Malcolm Jenkins, Mangold, and Beanie are pretty darn good players.
    Heyward is still TBD.

    I would guess that is at or above average for all first rounders from most any school. Some first rounders do not pan out.

    I would tell Mr. Michigan fan to get his facts straight before he opens his mouth.

    Yea, but Michigan players underperformed in college and the pros. Only good player I can name from Michigan was Jake Long. Their other highly touted players are in the welfare office as we speak

  • his statement didnt compare Mich pros to OSU pros. It was the OSU pros that Tressel produced vs the OSU pros that Cooper produced. He just pointed out that Cooper was a better player devl coach than Tressel. He also said Pryor and the Tattoo 5 saved OSU from becoming just a good program. That enabled OSU to fire Tressel and get a coach that can do both and possibly take this program back to greatness.

    There isn't a college football coach that will ever tell you that they and their program is a development tool for the NFL. Honestly I could care less if OSU ever puts another player into the NFL as long as we are the dominant college program around.

    UofM could load up the NFL with players but have shitty seasons as far as I'm concerned.
