When does this staff get fired?

  • I hope they make their decision immediately after the NCAA announces what the punishment will be. Gene Smith can retire (or be fired) immediately after the scUM game. Andy Geiger, you still out there big guy? Come on home!

We do not want Andy Geiger back, this stuff was going on when he was here.

We need somebody who will not foster the booster/player relationships.

  • I'm guessing a week after our conference title game when the new head coach is announced.

They will be gone before the bowl game.

Regardless of how this season is playing out, this staff has given a lot to Ohio State and I am of the opinion that the University needs to treat them with the utmost class to the bitter end. In all honesty, it's not Fickell's fault that he can't perform as HC at this level. The signs were there when he hung around for so long as a Co-DC without really getting many looks elsewhere. He probably would have been fine with a nice high profile career boost doing on the field coaching duties for Games 1 & 2.

As for the rest, if not for JT Bollman would have been gone long ago. We are getting exactly what we expect form him. Unlike recent seasons, we can't turn to JT or Hazell to bail him out. He is probably literally doing the best he can. As for Heacock, he's given us some headscratchers, and he's given us plenty of moments to be proud. Give him a great defense and he's great. Give him a great challenge and he's challenged. Again, we knew what to expect. Siciliano - what does he do again? Uh . . . nevermind.

Overall, JT stands as The Accused. From capabilities of those on the staff to the kids on the field to the development (or lack thereof) of talent, schemes, coaches, etc. - this season is the product of what he built. I do think there's a lot of talent on the roster and there are kids at nearly every position that I get excited to watch on the field. But what we've seen to date is Tressel's legacy, and it ain't pretty.

For those who remain, treat them with class and thank them for their service shortly after the Michigan game, doing everything in your power to help find work elsewhere.

Great post Zona. I totally agree and think we are too hard on these players and coaches. Including myself. At this point in time of the season, there is only downhill from here. It can't get any worse can it?

I just hope OSU manages the end of this season with respect and will try their hardest to find a coach that will bring this program back to where it was.

By the way Zona, at least we have ASU playing good ball.

Great post. I thought it might be a good idea to announce a new HC prior to the end of the season but I have been swayed by your post.

The only thing I disagree with is that Tressel is responsible for this. Of course he lied and has suffered the consequences. But no one plans for this kind of contingency of getting fired and leaving all of your staff in place pretty much as is. Tressel had his system and it worked for him. I don't think it makes sense to critique Tressel's system when he is not actually part of the system anymore. Without him, his system obviously doesn't work.

Once can compare this to Meyer's last year at Florida. Meyer's coaching system relied heavily on delegation. So much so that when his top aides were gone, Meyer had a mediocre team in spite of all those top recruiting classes.

My point is that all the pieces of the system have to be in place for the system to work. When important pieces are missing, the thing just doesn't work.

Now whether a system that relies heavily on the top dog or one that relies heavily on delegation is better or more effective is another question.

  • I think that it all comes down to timing. If OSU finds the next guy that they feel is the right guy for the job prior to the end of the season I think that they make the move ASAP. I understand that this staff has remained faithful, but if the university does not make the necessary moves when the opportunity presents itself, we could not only be losing out on a coaching opportunity, but we could also set ourself back even further with a bad recruiting class(es). However, if whoever they are interested in are still coaching and/or wanting to wait until the end of the season then it is out of their hands. I am sure Fickel and staff are great individuals but when you see a team going backwards, that marks a huge red flag with a coaching staff, these guys have been in the game for years and they know how this works. I honestly believe that most of us Buckeye fans can accept a non BCS year this year, I know I can understand that, it sucks, but I can understand it. What us Buckeye fans cannot understand is seeing a team go out there and not being competitive (MSU/Miami), watching the coaching staff not making the changes necessary to win a game whether it be in gameplan adjustments or personnel adjustments, or just total ineptitude taking a proud historic program to the bottom of the conference. Like I said, at least for me, I never expected this staff this year to take us to the promise land, but I also did not think that I would see the day that teams would not be affraid to take on the scarlet and grey.

  • Why don't we know what the sanctions are yet? Weren't they supposed to be out the week of the Nebraska game? Or was that just the players? I just don't understand why it is taking so long to hear the results of the meeting that took place August 12. That seems like that could be bad IMO. Hopefully not though, but with all this stuff that keeps coming out it can't be helping any.

The Nebraska week deadline was for the player suspensions, I believe the NCAA still has a couple of weeks give or take to announce their decision. However, at this point, I believe it is safe to assume that the NCAA will come out and announce that with the new developments they will delay the decision to re-evaluate the case.

bowl game! did you say bowl game uh did you watch the second half of the nebraska game? or any of the msu game.we aint making no bowl game. keep fickel fire bollman and get a real quarterbacks coach!how the hell could tressel waste a scholorship on bauser cluster f@#k to begin with, you cant tell me there wasn't a quarterback in ohio better than this guy. tressel needs more of the blame for this season.no ,no bowl this year remember we would we often struggle at illinois and at purdue when we had real good teams! don't wanna be negative but dont see a bowl in our future unless it's a real sh@tty one.

After the Miami loss I still had faith that we could get to a decent bowl game. That we would improve. But now, I'm beginning to have my doubts as well.

Illinois next week and trust they'll be ready. Hell they nearly beat us two of the years there in Champagne when we were title contenders and they were bottom feeders. They always play us tough whether it's there or here. The lone exceptions were 2005 and 2009 when we trounced them. But other than those two, they've become a bit of a nemisis for us.

Then Wisconsin. Wisconsin will come in here and beat us only for the second time in the Shoe since '04. PSU is vastly inconsistent as well and have to be the most unspectacular 5-1 team to watch in the nation but who knows on that one. The only guaranteed wins I forsee are against Indiana and Minnesota because @Purdue could be another disaster a la '09--esp if Bauserman remains the starting QB--with or without a Ryan Kerrigan rushing off the edge.

But to your point about Bauserman, I'll say that before you were on this board, I for the longest time kept telling people here that Tressel often offered scholarships on good will. As in the case of Bauserman. The question we must ask ourselves is if Bauserman was any good, why didn't the Ole Miss', Alabamas or his own home and regional FSU and either UVA/Va Tech grant him any serious offers? It's not as if it was our gain and their loss.

This QB situation is far less about Miller and speaks a whole lot more to the issue we have with Siciliano and how we recruit QBs here. Going back to when the QB rotation was Rob Schoenhoft, Antonio Henton and Todd Boeckman after Troy Smith left and before Pryor became a viable option.

Joe Daniels wasn't ideal or great as a QBs coach but far better than Siciliano, the former team videographer. So as much as we need a new O-coordinator, we just as much need a legit QBs coach.

All that being said, we either just miss a bowl game at 5-7 or, we make it to a New Year's Eve Bowl in Tempe--the Insight Bowl possibly against Kansas or Iowa State.

Gene Smith says early Nov. apparently.

I think they won't be overly harsh. Either a 1yr bowl ban or a few scholly losses. I think they were trying to send the message with their sanction on Posey.

  • the process will likely be that Fickell is let go a few days after the Michigan game and the rest of the staff will be free to negotiate to leave but will be asked to stay on until a new HC is named,,if they get it done within 6 weeks or less, (typical time frame), then we have a new HC named by January 1st and he decided who stays and who goes.

The most likley guy to stay is John Peterson, He is still fairly young, and as Recruiting coordinator he has the contacts with the Ohio HS's. and because he would be in charge of TE's (a less important position), then he will likely be retained.

If Urban is made HC then Drayton may be safe but might move back to being RB coach, and Vrabel being young and his NFL pedigree will buy him a year or 2 under another coach, depending on who the DC is.

my guess is Bollman and Nick S are let go, Heacock and Doc Retire and that leaves Haynes and Johnson outstanding.

new staff will be solidified by mid January.

Given that Tressel kept 3 guys from Cooper's staff (Heacock, Conley and Spencer), I would expect 2-4 guys to be held over.

if Drayton, Vrabel and Peterson are still here then both Haynes/Johnson may be gone.

Haynes being the new co-DC may buy him an in to the next staff for transition purposes.

If Drayton is not retained then both my still be here..
