Why was Jim O' Brien fired for lying but not Tressel?

  • After Jim O' Brien was found to be lying the University fired him immediately, I ask why not the same punishment for Tressel? I believe Tressel is a great guy and a good coach but lying is lying and now the football program will pay the price for all of this eventually.

    Did O'Brien have a NC?

  • Uh I don't think that Jim O'Brien was the captain of the $100M USD empire known as Buckeye football.

Look. You don't appear to understand that there is no such thing as one size fits all and that everyone gets the same punishment.

Tress is Tress and that's all you need to know. Not to mention, it's apparent that there is more going on behind the scenes and Tress has secured the trust and protection of Gee and G. Smith.

I don't want Tress to go and I hope he weathers this storm! cold

  • Different Time, Different College President, Different Atheletic Director. In O'Brien's case, he lied, but also there was a recruiting violation. He gave a recruit (Alex Radojevic) $6,000.00. Also, because Ohio State screwed up the firing so badly, O'Brien eventually won a settlement of $ 2.4 million for wrongful termination.

  • All true.....which means the NCAA might come down hard on us.

  • im sorry to say this but Jim Tressel has to go!

  • We are learning something more each week. What else is Fraud Tressel hiding?

    tornado_zadar

  • O'brien broke recruiting violations and paid players. Tressel was not involved in any of the violations. He just sat on it a while.

This is your response on every post. Come up with something new or go away. You are boring.

  • Its not.......

What's your problem? Just asking a question that many of us should be asking.

"Many" of us don't need to, you've asked 12 googolplex times for us.

  • O'Brien was fired because the people that mattered didn't like him.

  • I think his name is Jim Tressel.

  • Tressel beats Michigan and won a National Championship

  • O'Brian gave money to a potential recruit. Tressel was only protecting his players from something that they did. Sorry, but it's apples and oranges.

    buckeyebill2003

  • I think so many of you hit it on the head, he's won games. You think Earle Bruce, who is a great guy and builder of young men's character, would have survived this, not at 9 - 3. What about Johnny Cooper, who also is a great guy and one of JT's personal speakers, would he still be around? Not with all those michigan losses. So is JT this great guy and a builder of young men's character, hell, I don't know, never met the guy but he wins and just like the rest, I'll take that over losing. Does he lie, this is the time your computer would flash: circular reference!

  • It's the same reason why Bruce Pearl was fired last week: he lost and lost big. O'Brien in '04 was in the midst of his worst season since his first in '98 coupled with the money he had doled out to a prospective player.

And had Pearl advanced, people in the media would still be asking "Will Pearl be fired?"
Make no mistake about it: collegiate sports is a business, in particular the football and basketball components. Don't buy into this nonsense that these are amateurs being guided by teachers looking out for their best interests.

In order to generate revenue for a school, a coach must win and win consistently and at the ultimate level. The days of a coach building a program and staying there for two generations is over. Coaches at big-name programs are given on average, a two-year window to succeed or to show signs of improvement from season one to the next if they hope for a longer term contract.

Tressel won't be fired but trust that by the time his contract expires in a few years, he'll call it quits. That's considering more isn't made of this NCAA investigation and depending on how this upcoming season goes as well.

  • How about a 2.4 million dollar law suit paid to O'Brien being a good reason?

Jim O'Brien was actively involved in many of the violations. Tressel on the other hand was not involved in the violations.

What??? Tressel IS the violation. I am tired of the "Vest" homers using the "it was just a few poor, downttrodden helpless players trying to sell their own possessions so that they could afford some Rammen noodles to keep from starving" excuse.

This is about JT being cought several times LYING to keep his players on the field. He has lost all credibility and integrity and so has Smith and Gee

How dare they come out and give such total support to JT in the very same Presser in which he was cought LYING again!!

  • Again...another ridiculous thread

    boognish

  • Way stupid....It seems to be the theme of Bucknuts Threads these days. Stupid comments run amuck. tOSU is very blessed to have Jim Tressel. If I had a son, and he was 1-A caliber....I'd feel very very secure if Jim Tressel was his leader and coach. Perhaps folks should try to get to know the man, and get their noses out of the mindless Dispatch or watching ESPN for all their information about someone, especially soneone's character. Nobody, knows Jim Tressel more than the AD, President and his PLAYERS....I am still waiting for someone who truly knows the man to say something bad about him? When.....Where?

For all those perfect people out there….Mirrors people.....look in the mirrors.....

The more I think about it...I realize some so-called Buckeye Fans are just haters in general. Probably hate most things in life...this situation just gives them their latest target. It's a shame...probably can't see the good in anything...or anyone.

  • I'm sure you would love to send your son to Tressel so he can surround him with teammates like Pryor who is associating himself with drug dealers. Or are we making that up???

that man is not who he we al thought he was. Fraud!!!

    tornado_zadar

  • He is not a fraud, and I am still proud to have him as our coach. In some small way, I like the fact that he has done something questionable. He's human, and he made a big mistake. Was it for the NC, Pryor, himself? We'll never know trhe real reason he lied, but we all do it, and that doesn't mean we should be fired or called names. JT has won us alot of games, and done it with class. He has brought our program to the pinnacle, and now he let "us" down...get over it. Like sugarcrystal says, when his contract is up, he walks.
