World Rankings of Universities by Reputation.....

  • Ohio State comes in 56th in world reputation. Could and should be better but not bad overall. Here is a listing of some of the B1G schools and a few select others.

    http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2013/reputation-ranking/range/01-50

    14) Univ. of Chicago - academic B1G school
    24) Illinois
    30) Wisconsin
    31) Duke - my Alma Mater
    37) Northwestern
    50) Purdue

  • I think the ranking is "respectable" considering 1) who conducted the poll and 2) considering all of the other "famous" and reputable universities throughout the world and here statewide as well that are listed.

However what I cannot understand is how Wisconsin and Illinois are ranked that far ahead of Ohio State.

This university has improved vastly on the academic front just in the past decade and is showing continued signs of improvement. It once had the reputation as a large, impersonal research institution which would admit just about anyone. And I suspect with the more stringent admissions standards coupled with the switch to semesters that in the next few years it'll rise at least 15 spots on this list.

Ohio State will definitely rise up the list. I'm not sure exactly how far, but as I student I can see, feel, hear, and experience the fact that this great University is working hard and taking steps every day to become better.

  • Seeing Brown University ranked just ahead of the University of Florida in the 80s tells me all I need to know about this ranking system. There's lots of better schools in the US that aren't on this list simply because they're a bit smaller. The ranking seems to be very subjective based on international recognition. Hell, Dartmouth, Vanderbilt, Rice, and Notre Dame aren't even ranked and they're lightyears ahead of Rutgers in terms of academic prestige.

My Alma Mater (Dartmouth College) came in at #124. Wow. Apparently they believe that there are 11 Big Ten schools that are academically better than Dartmouth College.

I am a little skeptical about any methodology that would generate such a result.

Good to see Ohio State fare that well in the world rankings. Hopefully Ohio State will continue to,rise up,the rankings - great in the classroom AND on the field of play.

Do you think that larger Universities have more research capacity and therefore improve their international outlook? Both of those things are criteria they use it says.

Seeing Michigan up that high does hurt but they are a very good academic insitution. They have a very good engineering school and their law school is also top of the line. I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

I think you are exactly right, MIT.

Your Alma Mater (assuming you went to MIT) did very very well.......

I worked at U. of Queensland (#78) and U of Notre Dame. Your right, Notre Dame is light years ahead of schools like UQ. However a big part of these ranking are 'how other universities perceive you' and 'how high a % of international students you have' . That pretty much tells you that Times is just guessing.

Besides, these overall ranking are kind of pointless because one university may have a great law program, but a bad med school and another school may have a great med program, but a bad law program. How do you compare these 2. Universities are too big, you need to break it down into the individual fields of study to have any real meaning for rankings.

  • This kind of survey is all about perception. Schools with big name researchers, big business and engineering schools, and famous alumni shoot to the top of the list.

It has some, but not a lot. of correlation to actual academics.

No No didn't go to MIT, I am an OSU alum. MIT just stands for something else. I am not smart enough for that school. I wish I was though!

not trying to be a troll, but how can you forget about business. UM has one of the best business school. sorry, had to throw that in there. hope that doesn't make you throw up more. I know I'll get couple DV's for this

It did make me throw up more. LOL. I actually just know they have a good engineering school because I went to school for engineering and my room mate from college is now a Lawyer. I did say it is a ver good academic institution though trying to cover the rest. OK quit making me say that before I have to leave work from puking much more. haha

Use the puking as a way to get a half day off of work. Puking because you hate Michigan and puking because you are sick is still puking in the eyes of a reasonable boss. Just saying, enjoy a half day off! Michigan's med school is also really good.
    Puke more?
