Anyone else underwhelmed by the recruiting so far?

  • I, and a lot of other people, thought that this class would have filled up a lot quicker than it has. There are some good recruits that we've got so far, but I think people expected more sooner. After watching michigan and other schools fill up, I think some people are scratching their heads, wondering what's going on.

It seems like the more time goes on the more excuses people make and the more people keep saying things like "trust urban".

Maybe I thought we'd have a couple more by now (more like Alabama does) but I am far from underwhelmed. The bottom line is what we wind up with on National Letter of Intent Signing Day. Then I'll see if I will be better able to tell you if I am underwhelmed. Then in four years, I can definitely tell you how the recruiting went. I can't believe how Michigan's fast start has gotten into the psyche of a lot of tOSU fans!

Hey dude, can you tell me when NLOID is scheduled? shrug

Uh huh, exactly almost a year away, so no I am not "underwhelmed" as I understand the recruiting game FULLY! Apparently you don't or you wouldn't have asked this question.

It doesn't matter where the Bucks are now. It matters where you finish in Feb of 2013.

Just relax a bit, get ready for the Spring game and let the camp circuit happen. Coach Meyer and the Buckeyes will be fine.

You are only playing your self and exposing where you are mentally in regards to recruiting by posting this drivel. The real "recruitniks" on this board that have been following this for years understands where things are at this time.

I think that its fairly clear where you fall on this plane!

this is a marathon, not a sprint. alot of those kids will flip schools, an some wont even sign. urban wants kids that want to be their. we are 7 days removed from the national signing period. (alot of people think its just feb 1, but its actually the whole month) and you are concerned/ why? players will come out the blue, an some will fall off. just relax an join the ride.teams are filling up an leaving the best kids out there, its better for tosu to grab top talent if you look at it that way.

the problem is that we don't know if these guys we're hoping to get like jaylon smith, robert foster, pocic and the likes will even come here. You combine the somewhat slow start with an uncertain future and I think it looks a little cloudy for the future. I'm sure we'll end up getting a decent class, but you have to admit that maybe people held urban to unrealistic standards.

I think the biggest thing that will help is the recruits getting to watch the team play this season. All anyone knows of ohio state is the tressel years. Even with urban coming in with a different approach, I think it's still kind of hard for kids to invision the new look ohio state till they see the team play.

  • It's the first part of March, are you serious. Speed to fill up 2013 class isn't important, quality is. Who cares what mich and other teams are doing, the kids that want to be Buckeyes will be there in the end. When J.T. was coach everyone was bitching about him not being able to close late, now guys are whinning about not getting players early. I just cant get over how easy people on here PANIC about nothing. Go Bucks.

  • There's still the spring game, summer camps, and senior season film to evaluate and with the new rule of honor the scholarship for 4 years you better make sure he is the real deal.

  • Some people are acting like bitches on this site. Its freaking MARCH!!! Come on man. I am tired of getting beat by sec teams. Im glad Meyer is going for better players.

We are a month past signing day and have 11 more months to go until the next signing day. How can you really be underwhelmed at this point in time? I think when you look at it from a logical standpoint, do we want it to fill quickly? Sure, it makes sense that since we have less scholarships to deal with that the spots should fill quickly, but in reality, with limited scholarships, don't you want a thorough examination of the talent and take the best possible guys we can since we have little room for error? I'd rather make sure that we get the right people instead of just filling a class quickly without getting a great look at many of these guys.

    unkybuck

  • steelfist... get a grip, for years Texas would have 75% - 90% of their class filled up before mid summer, and look at how they've done lately, not real well. Everyone saw Michigan have a good start last year, and their class lost some commits late in the process, it's a marathon not a sprint, and the end result you want is to be standing there at the end with the gold medal. Let Michigan jump out, I'm looking for some of these commits to be turned away as the process draws closer to signing day.

    joe1776p

  • and lets not mention do you want a kid that gets bent out of shape by the fact that the team he wants an offer from doesnt offer by the end of his JR year and commits elsewhere

I guess a lot of you guys failed to read the topic. The key word is "so far"

The way a lot of people were talking, they thought we'd have more high caliber guys signed by now and would have a lot more guys showing legit interest. My only question is if, right now, the recruiting has not met your expectations.

Calm down. You guys seem so hostile on this board. What is your problem?

The people here are not IN with the "more civil public discourse" that some people are calling for in light of Rush Limbaugh's recent issue.

They like to take out their daily aggressions on the internet instead of telling their bosses or their wives, etc. what they really think of them.

    Sad and childish.

I hate getting into arguments, but I can't really hold back on this one. Really?! One month after signing day, and you are now saying that we will end up with just a "decent class" because of an uncertain future? What uncertain future are you talking about? We got our punishment for a year, which won't affect these kids, so what else can you possibly be talking about that will make it cloudy? If you're ready to jump off the bridge a month into the 2013 class, then just do so already...dramaqueen...otherwise, just back away from the ledge and be patient!

And this isn't a slow start! I'm not going to look this up, but give me the last time that Tressel had 5 highly ranked recruits within the first 2.5 weeks after signing day? Yeah, I know we had a couple commit early, but you get my point. He usually sealed up most of his recruits by late spring to mid summer, but it was rare to have the caliber of talent that Urban has now. And before you get into a tizzy, I'm not saying Tressel had bad recruits...I'm just saying it was rare for Tressel to have this type of talent this early on in the process and even more rare that he had this many recruits commit this quickly into the class.

Good point. Was just trying to see the opinions of others on here. i guess things are going how everyone thought they would go? judging by the responses on here.

Since Ubran came here, I've gotten more into recruiting than I have before. I think I've been a victim of having too high of expectations. I'm just going to lower my expectations and see how things go.

I'm not comparing urban to tress, as most people think urban is the superior recruiter. Geez. I really apologize for posting this question on this board as it seems a lot of you have got your panties in a bunch. Feel free to delete this thread as it seems to have caused a lot of stress to the members on this board.

  • A lot changes during these kids senior seasons. New names (and rankings) will emerge as the year goes by. I'm sure that come February 2013, we will be excited over at least a few tOSU commits whose names we probably have not seen yet.

  • Good point on high expectations. We got 4 of the best players in the state. Personally I think some of ttun's recruits are borderline 4 star players and when the other sites put out there rankings this will be proven. That being said we are in on a lot of great prospects and these type of player take time to decide. I say roll the dice a see what happens, Meyer has got as good of a shot as anyone in landing them.

actually signing day is a MADE UP DAY by the fans ,media etc .you can sign up to the 1st practice of a team .
Say OSU 1st practice is August 1 (they have til one day before this to sign a kid AND he must register in school before the 1st practice)
there are a few kids that register early (to go against last years numbers) Dunn for example ..but there class might not start til August or Sept as long as they register in school early it can count vs previous years numbers.
47 of rivals top 100 are committed already yes there will be 10-20 kids left but there will be 25-30 schools chasing these kids

It seems like the more time goes on the more excuses people make and the more people keep saying things like "trust urban".

I think all you have to do is Google Mack Brown the Head coach from Texas and see what he has learned from this early recruiting process. Texas has gone 5-7 and 8-5 (4-5 in the conference) he states that getting caught up in this early recruiting game, with 16 yr old kids that have not played a snap of their Senior year, some have not panned out real well. Texas of course is certainly been a Top 5-10 rated recruiting school for many years.

Some 4 and 5 star kids fall in the rankings after they are evaluated after their Senior year. How about the kid that blows a knee out? What about the kid that is not even on the recruiting radar (so to speak) and had a monster Senior year and ends up being a beast because he has grown and matured? You fill your class early, you have no room for the rising stars.

I think scUM is in that very boat right now. There loading up with lineman, but, where are the skill players going to come from? What happens to the early recruits that have verbalized now, and scUM has a very mediocre season next year? (which is very possible) And let's say the Buckeyes run the table next year (which is also very possible) and these lineman recruits see this and know there are 6 other lineman coming in, what happens? Urban gets accused of flipping them from only a verbal committment. This is reality.

Getting these committments now, makes for great headlines and gives us football junkies something to do in the Winter time, but it doesn't transpose into one victory on the field next fall. Yes, i say trust Urban. look at his track record. let him put his complete system in. He turned 3 programs around on other guys recruits. The guy at scUM had the same oppurtunities at other programs, and he is a .500 coach. Check out Mack Brown as well......

  • Has anyone considered that it might benefit the Buckeyes that some of these guys haven't committed yet? Some of these kids might shy away from compeition. Since we want two top tight ends, a guy like McNeil who holds off on committing to enjoy the recruiting season won't scare any of the other stud tight ends away. We will never know what discussions go on between these recruits and Urban. I am sure he has a decent idea of which guys are truly Buckeye leans. I would much rather he wait and get guys he really wants than to reach for guys that don't fit his schemes (even if they are instate).
