I like Gedeon a lot. A Lot. He sounds like a smart guy (Stanford offer) and a high character individual and a workout warrior and there should always be room for 1-2 of those kinds of kids. But he's also a tweener like McCray--is he a linebacker, a running back, a fullback, or an H-back? Not that it matters because none of those positions are priorities. His versatility as an athlete who can play any one of several positions should be a strength in a smaller class but that same argument could have been made for McCray. I'd like to see him in S&G but my life will somehow manage to go on if I don't.
While he's got an offer, he's probably 5th or 6th on our LB board behind Courtney Love, Alex Anzalone, Jaylon Smith, E. J. Levenberry and Peter Kalambayi. And that's at a position where we're only likely to take 2, tops. If we miss out on all of these other guys, maybe then we'll wish we'd signed McCray. But if we get two of them, McCray and maybe Gedeon weren't coming to OSU, anyway. I don't see Gedeon carrying the rock as an every down ball carrier, not when we have better guys at that position already. That means he'd have to be content with being a FB/H-back and where's the glory in that? If he wants to play LB, scUM's a good fit. They need LBs more than we do.
If anyone's panicking, it's the Butts, Charltons and McCrays--Ohio kids who want to play at OSU but are afraid if they wait and there's nothing for them, they'll end up being forced to go to Purdue or Illinois or WVU or Kentucky or UC so they're jumping on Hoke's offers early before his class fills up. They see what's happening at scUM--spots are filling up fast, which is creating a sense of urgency; meanwhile, Urban's taking his own sweet time. From their perspective, it's better to be #1 and wanted at Michig@n than 5th or 6th and stuck in limbo in Ohio.
In all honesty, if you're a stud 4/5-star Ohio kid and OSU's dragging its feet and you need to start looking at other options, where would you rather be--playing in front of 110,000 in the Big House and competing for B1G championships or 60,000 in Ross-Ade Stadium and hoping you win 6 games and are bowl eligible so you can play in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in Detroit in late December?

I'm guessing Hoke is reminding them of that, too. "Sure you want an OSU offer, but they want to evaluate you. They're using you as a backup plan. I want you to be a big part of this team, and I want you to commit today. You're not my backup plan." That's what I'd be doing if I were him. It's definitely working to some extent. Sometimes all these early offers and commits work out in the end, but sometimes your class fills up and you wish you hadn't taken so many early commits so you could get some late-bloomers and kids that wait til National Signing Day. While Hoke may not be holding out for a ton of blue-chippers like Meyer appears to be doing, he's definitely getting some quality players.

Meyer is not just hitting Virginia, he is hitting North Carolina, Florida, Texas, New Jersey, Maryland and Georgia. Yes, a lot of these traditional Ohio kids we took got us to 10 wins, but when we played the LSU's, Florida's and USC's, the speed and athletic mismatches were obvious. Michigan stole Prescott Burgess, Manningham, Crable and other Ohio kids, when they played those two elite USC teams in Rose Bowls they got embarrassed by those athletes, their OL could not block those front seven athletes. You cannot block something at game time speed you do not face all year in practices or games. Penn State at 11-1 got hammered by USC as well, their defensive athletes were too good. Meyer is going to get the Ohio kids he wants, and then pass on the fringe kids we use to take to keep away from Big Ten schools, and land a few elite speed/explosion athletes every year from the mid atlantic down thru Florida and over to Texas. Watch how easily Alabama will stifle and soundly beat Michigan in September and tell me those DL athletes and back seven elite speed defensive players do not seperate the true elite from real good teams.

The only problem with that is that if Meyer picks a select few Ohio kids and can convince a few top notch players from around the country to come to OSU, they still need a base of other kids in the class. The southern schools have great nearby talent that fills up their class, but how will Ohio do it.

Also, distance is a huge factor for most recruits. If you look at highly ranked recruiting classes, they teams generally have great in-state (or neighboring) talent as their base. USC had Cali, UT has Texas, UF has Florida. Those programs (and others) can convince a few top level recruits from around the country to sign up, but it is not their bread and butter. That is even more true in a state like Ohio, which is behind those states in population and talent.
Meyer needs to get more than just a handful of top guys from Ohio. He can't build a full class with only 5 or so top Ohio kids and then get kids from around the country.

Your the buffoon that gets booted off Scout and runs over here, problem is, I know you are a clown. That ends that discussion. Meyer is just like Saban, Pete Carroll, Calipari and Roy Williams, they can go national and will, your two cents worth is not worth a plug nickel. You keep signing a DB from Cass Tech that has one offer from Toledo, a H Back from Detroit you won from Central Michigan, a soon to be DB from Massilon that you beat beat Indiana for, and Dukes who you beat Toledo and Illinois for and keep telling yourself this class is elite, outside of a few good OL. Maybe you can click your heels and meeting Dorothy and Toto in Kansas. Thad Matta landed 5 elite kids in 2011 from Michigan, Georgia, New Jersey, Mississippi and Illinois, distance was no factor there. Urban Meyer pulled 8/9 kids a year from the mid atlantic and Texas areas, he will do similar at Ohio State, while getting most of the good players he wants from Ohio and western Pa. Pete Carroll use to bring in several kids a year from Georgia, New Jersey (Cushing and Jarrett one year), Florida and Ohio amongst a few. Meyer has two kids from North Carolina all but a done deal for this class, two from Pa, 1/2 from Florida and probably 4 from New Jersey. He has the #2 QB dual threat QB visiting from Texas this weekend in Barrett, and a #3 dual threat QB from Illinois visiting while he is asking Zaire to tryout this June, and he wants to be a Buckeye with offers from Bama, ND, Nebraska and others. Get lost with your theories above, that applies to non national brand coaches like Hoke. Go look at Saban's last classes, quite a few kids from Maryland, Ohio, Pa and other areas. Meyer is on the same level of recruiting cache with the Saban's and Calipari's, your two cents here is not worth a plug nickel. Where's your gay picture of Brandon from Scout that is so cute?

I remember a coach that deemphasized recruiting in Ohio to recruit more on a national level. His name is John Cooper. Cooper didn't think Ohio had good enough athletes. Look how that one turned out for us. 14 years, 2 wins against scUM. scUM said "thank you very much cooper, we will take all the Ohio kids you passed on, good luck recruiting nationally"
I can't help but to think that Meyer is making some of the same mistakes.
