Well, that's not necessarily the case -- word is that Rod just isn't picking things up very quickly. I've even seen tidbits here and there on the blogs and comment boards that Dunn may have passed him on the depth chart. What we'll have to watch for is whether the pecking order includes 3 backs and if Rod isn't one of them then you know he's just been passed. But if we're just seeing Hyde / Hall playing, then you're probably right in that they just don't want to involve a 3rd back for whatever reason. I suspect Dunn will play though. Meyer has said it a few different times in his post-practice pressers.
I really had high hopes for Rod...hope he gets it by fall camp.

Yea tell me about it.
Remember back in the day when there were "collective woodies" on this board with regard to Rod Smith? There were flat out delusions about this kid being Eddy George & Earl Campbell all wrapped into one bad muthafracka that could out play Archie Griffen!
Damn were the insiders and those claiming to know this kid from the hinter lands of Indiana wrong about this one?
Not saying that it can't happen eventually, BUT if the rumor of him getting passed on the depth chart and dropping down to the 4th place back are true, I wouldn't bet on this kid's rise!
There is still time. Just not much time left for him to make his mark.
I think I heard someone say on this board and I think that it fits:
IF a pup is gonna bite, he's gonna bite early and bite hard! Not sure this bodes well for young Mr. Smith!

Wow, so all of a sudden we are trailing for his signature after being his favorite since the begining of his recruitment. Guess the Elliot commitment scared him off a bit, but if you think about it we do have a stable of studs in our backfield! Intresting to see how this play out, any predictions? Go Bucks!

No -- I think is just enjoying the once in a lifetime recruiting trips and attention. I believe he said as much in one of the the many interviews being reported. He probably just likes messing with people like yourself that hang on every word he says. If he was afraid of competition then why Clemson? They signed another RB for their 2013 class. Why go there if that was really the issue. I don't think it is. Green was quoted as saying that he spoke to the OSU coaches AFTER Elliot committed as was assured that we were taking 2 RBs and they wanted him to be in the class. I believe he is just having fun at your expense and at the expense of every one of us that lurks on all the website's trying to figure out were these kids are going. I don't think he is afraid of Elliot--if your a top 5th or 6th RB in the nation, you don't cower when a lesser RB is on the team because you know he is not better than you.

Really sad that a kid who dreamed of being a buckeye, and gets an offer, maybe misses out. Don't know if it was just a matter of convincing himself or others convincing him that he had enough time and should look around. Seemed odd to me that he threw out a 2013 announcement date with the number of RB offers out there. But looks like he maybe out in the cold and needing to come to realization he has to consider other schools seriously.
If he isn't a buckeye- its going to be tough on him watching Grant (his buddy he convinced go the OSU) win a national title.

We have 9 in, which leaves us maybe 11 spots open in a class of 20, which is based on having only 81 now, 15 seniors and losing probably 4 to attrition. Here's how this class seems to be shaking out:
QB: none in, need 1 (Barrett or Bailey but not both), maybe 2 (Chapman, Trubisky) RB: 1 in, maybe 1 more (Green, Clement, Williams, Isaac, Mizell, others) OL: 1 in, need at least 2 more, maybe 3 more (Pocic, Lazard, Montellus, Johnson, others?) TE: 1 in, maybe 1 more (Heuerman or McNeil) WR/ATH/playmaker: 1 in, maybe 2 more (Shelton, Quick, Allen, North, Treadwell, Foster) DE/DT: 2 in, maybe 2 more (Bosa, Hurst, Bower, Daniel, Poggi, Munger, Sherit, Neal) LB: none in, need at least 2 (Smith, Anzalone, Love, Kimbrough, Levenberry, others?) DB: 3 in, maybe 1-2 more (Cravens, Day, Alexander, Bell)
Top Priorities: OL (2), LB (2), QB (1) and WR (1). That's at least 6 right there, minimally, maybe as many as 9. Not priorities: RB, TE, DL, DB.
Sometimes, in order to get something, you have to give up something, e.g., if Bosa commits, what/who are we willing to give up? If we don't get Heuerman or McNeil, what are we losing since TE's not a priority position?
At some point, Urban's going to faced with the old "bird in hand = two in the bush" dilemma--does he take a kid he knows he can get today or does he hedge his bets and hold off for a 5-star who won't make his decisions until January or even NSD? Does he take a 5-star at a non-priority position (Bosa) and then give up one at a priority position (QB, OL, LB)?
Or do we see more roster attrition, instead of maybe four guys leaving for different reasons, could it be as many as 9 so we get a class of 25 again?
This is where it really starts to get interesting. And it's only mid-April.

It is obvious that none of you guys have EVER been down South to visit any of these campuses, because Clemson and VT especially are two Beautiful places to live. Playing Football is NOT the #1 purpose in life, and should NOT be the focus in life, and #1 consideration in deciding one path and direction in one young man';s future. Sure we are all HOMERS here in Buckeye Nation, and I for one did not even go to OSU myself. I wanted to get away from home. There are other Beautiful campuses around the Country, and those two are two Beautiful campuses. Take it from me.
D Green seems to be like Diggs last year, or even Diamond. Sort of like a "what have you done for me lately?'" I would not be waiting on the fence post for him anytime soon. Let him go. We have such a young stable of backs here for a long time coming. Jordan is a Senior Carlos is a Junioir Rod is a Soph Brionte is a Freshmen Warren is a Reshirt Elliott is in the Barn Why do we need any more? There is more coming in 2014 Dymonte Thomas wants to play RB doesn't he? Lets flip him and give him a shot at RB, before putting him back where he belongs at SS!

Iowa I appreciate how analytic you are, but I would tweak your logic here. QBs no more WRs 2 or 3 Gibson will commit leaving one or two more Hopefully Foster and Quick TEs 1 Heuerman will commit probably leaving McNeill out OLs 1 or 2 Posic hopefully Maybe Montelus Johnson probably to PSU DL 3 SSDE Bosa, LEO Neal, and One DT The first to commit Probably Hurst LB 1 or 2 Love or Kimbrough, and Smith if persuaded DBs 2 or 3 Bell, maybe Thomas can be flipped,Worley, outside chance of Cravens or Alexander, and only last minute settling on Day
Class can not be over 20 unless mass exodus, but I can not see why too many kids would want to leave this program with the excitement brewing. Unless there are grade problems, medical issues, or disciplinary problems which I believe are going to taper off this year. Kenny Hayes may have gained too much weight to carry his knees. Chris Carter may not find enough PT. Too early to tell about anyone else. No Juniors will transfer out with only one year left.

I am all for running back depth and how it is a "flashy" topic! He stated early on Ohio State was his leader and he wanted to be just like Eddie George and now he tweets that Michigan would be hard to say no to!? Any Buckeye that I want on my team could say no to Michigan very easily. If you are a true Buckeye it would be easy... just say NO! Or if you are the shy type tell Hoke there is a Hometown Buffet behind him and when he turns to look run away! Problem solved!
We need to concentrate on filling scholarships with playmaking wideouts and offensive linemen!
