I would like to know more about this too. 4 star kid who was a baller.

  • Last I heard ( a long time ago) his injuries were severe enough that the chance of him playing again was slim to none. However there had been so much worthless crap info floating around about him I would take that with a big grain of salt.

  • This is very soft information, but as I remember, Jamel finally got out of Youngstown (w/JT's help) and enrolled in a JC school in Kansas (Coffeyville?)?? But that was almost a year ago. He did recover enough to play football again. I recall saying to myself at the time that he will get another shot at D-1 football, with JT probably sheparding him to someone like Pellini (geographically close and the right kind of disciplinarian/coach).TIFWIW.

Former recruit Jamel Turner back on track?

Seven months after gunshot wounds left him in critical condition, former Ohio State recruit Jamel Turner is in college and hoping to continue his football career.

Turner, a defensive end, has enrolled this semester at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan., according to Dan Reardon, Turner’s coach at Youngstown Ursuline High School.

“We’ll see, he certainly has some obstacles to overcome,” Reardon said. “But he has so much potential, you hope everything comes together for him. It’s really been one of those screenplays, with the ups and downs and everything.”

Turner’s saga began in the winter of 2009, when he was kicked off Ursuline’s basketball team for disciplinary reasons and declared ineligible for sports the rest of the school year.

He enrolled at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy that fall and signed with Ohio State in February 2010. But he left Fork Union before finishing the school year, and trouble soon found him back in Youngstown.

Turner was involved in two shooting incidents, the second of which – in June – left a 17-year-old girl dead and Turner fighting for his life.

Reardon said he is encouraged that Turner has “has had a pretty good past four or five months. He has made good decisions and removed a lot of negative things from his life.”

At this point, Reardon said Turner simply is focused on getting back to playing football and going to school. Butler was the national runner-up in the junior college ranks last season, losing in the title game.

Any talk of where Turner might end up _ including Ohio State _ is premature.

However, Reardon said, “In a year or two, if he’s done everything he’s supposed to do, I wouldn’t rule it out.”

Man, just more additional evidence of the role that Coach Tressel has played in the lives of players.
The image and impact of Coach T. will be missed in ways that are unmeasurable at this point.

I wasn't aware that the Coach was working behind the scenes in this manner with Jamel Turner. It doesn't surprise me and just
underscores why the University should have stuck up for him even more to maintain his association with the OSU.

Let's hope Turner does well and ultimately becomes a Buckeye. I would hate to see this coming back to bite the University in the azz
despite Coach Tressel's role in attempting to recover this kid from the mean streets of Youngstown.

  • If the young man turns his life around and begins to live a productive life, that's all that really matters. If he can also become the football player most thought he could be that would be gravy. Just don't be surprised if OSU does not go after him once he's physically back to his former abilities. This is the type of young man that gets programs drug through the mud, penalized, and back on probation should he revert back to his old ways. Something, I would imagine the current regime will be avoiding at all costs for many years. I thought Tress was a good man who tried to be a positive influence on kids from questionable backgrounds who were also great football players....we all saw what that got him.
