Rich Rod once went for the "SEC SPEED" admittedly it got us to the bottom of the B1G. Because in reality Urban isnt going to pull 8 recruits from the south. And he'll be left with the "Talentless" and "Slow" players he gave the cold shoulder to

Michigan did not have any type of defense under Rich Rod so a pee wee football team could have scored 40 plus on his defenses. The "SEC SPEED" worked well for you on offense, but you also have to develop players on defense as well. The BIG always looses to SEC teams because we have a bunch of teams with slow players and a few good athletes. Michigan will find this out the hard way against Alabama this season.

Yeah, trying to get kids to come to florida is a lot easier than getting these warm weather kids to want to brace the winter. I'm an ohio state fan, but a lot of fans have been in denial over this recruiting season. Can't tell you how many times I've heard the phrase trust urban or trust in urban after recruit after recruit goes somewhere else.

I'll just sit back and watch these experts, iowabuckeye, talk down on recruits--Zaire and pump this board full of sunshine.

Most of these recruits we've "missed" were kids from B1G states who stayed in the Midwest, mainly picking scUM and ND. Name one kid outside B1G country that we've offered who's signed with a school outside B1G country. Answer: None. Not one. So we're not getting beaten by SEC schools purging recruits in Ohio and the Midwest. Southern kids aren't the only ones who like to stay close to home so their families can watch them.

Otherwise, I'm not sure if you've dissed me or complimented me, not that I care one way or the other. I call 'em as I see 'em. If people don't like it, hit the Ignore button.

  • What are you doing on our board little boy blue? How bout them Bobcats? You guys should really start trying to beat teams in your own state before your allowed to cross borders. Michigan State owns you guys. They have beat you guys down in bball and football. You are their little brother in state of michigan. lol

I can't imagine why fans would say "Trust Urban"

Oh wait maybe it's because he passed scUM's best class in years.....and did it in 30 days

Or because his recruiting classes at Florida looked like this:
    2006: #13
    2007: #1
    2008: #12
    2009: #21
    2010: #1

So how can we be in denial over a recruiting season that isn't over for 11 more months?

Interestingly, SI has ranked Urban's 2006 class as the 6th best college football recruiting class ALL-TIME. That's going back over 60 years. And it's because Tebow, Spikes, Harvin & Company became the cornerstone that won 2 NCs.

It's not where you start but where you finish.

    iowabuckeyes

  • We swept them last year in basketball and split the series this year. What are you talking about. And don't forget about the previous 6 years that we won EVERY game.

    michiganfan22

  • Because your disrespecting your local talent. Fine with me will take the feeder schools. But im warning you, when you lose the midwest, you will become mediocre at best. Oh and how many games has Urban won at Ohio State? Zero, so its not like their is a bunch to "TRUST" in. Also Spence and most of your last minute steals were from the midwest, not the south, like the recruits Meyer is after

I think you are buying into these disrespecting local talent and Meyer only is recruiting the South mantras too hard. As luck would have it, I just wrote a series of posts on the Michigan board addressing these very topics that I think present reasonably objective cases that these misconceptions are not true. I suspect you're just here to get a rise out of people, but if not then check the posts out and let me know what you think:

  • Getting back to Malik ....

    Interesting inisght here: http://irish.nbcsports.com/2012/03/25/quarterback-malik-zaire-commits-to-the-irish/

    His quote ...
"When Coach Meyer got there we had a good one-on-one relationship too. I don’t want to say I shied away, but I lost interest when they offered like seven or eight other quarterbacks in a one or two week span. That turned me off a little.”

sounds like if we would've signed him and another qb in this class ....he wouldnt want to COMPETE.

or maybe he just wanted alotta love .....lol ....i dunno.

This illustrates the problem Meyer is facing coming into a coaching position at a time when recruiting timelines continue to be accelerated. Either he:

    1) Shows love to only a few QBs during the Spring and risks not loving any of them once he sees them in action (or even worse, once they've commited), or

    2) Makes a number of conditional offers to QBs whose films look good, knowing he'll be able to target better from the list once he sees them in action, with the risk that a potentially unconditional offer's feelings are hurt.

With limited schollies Meyer chose option 2, and we lost Zaire, who may or may not have received an unconditional offer eventually. This won't be a problem next year, fortunately.

    1. Last time I checked, Maryland, Diggs's home state, was not in the B1G.
    2. The perceived "panic" is over the current "smallness" of 2013's class, not 2012's, which is full.

  • Kelly is really starting to get some nice players over in South Bend. With the class he had last year and the recent commits he has just had, Notre Dame should be pretty good. Their board says they have Ryan Green rated as their #1 RB for this class. Lets hope he doesnt go for the golden dome

Nobody from the 2013 class has signed anywhere. Straw man argument.

To be fair, you judge each player on a case to case basis. These ohio players that were told to come to camp are players, just like from everywhere else, that Urban wants to see camp. They shouldn't feel a sense of entitlement just because they are from Ohio. Too bad Malik chose Notre Dame, but Ohio State seems to be in good runnign with J.T Barrett.

Touche. I'll concede the point based on my initial wording.

However, this thread has been about the 2013 class, which Diggs is clearly not a part of. My original point, which I admit I worded badly, is that no one INSIDE B1G country that we have offered has COMMITTED to a school OUTSIDE B1G country. But again, since I f*cked up my original statement, I give you credit for recognizing its ambiguity.

Now that I've acknowledged my error and clarified my position, I now invite you to name one kid in the 2013 class who lives in a state with a B1G school that Ohio State's offered and who has committed to a school outside B1G country.

This will be Hoke's and Kelly's 3rd classes but both of them are moving a lot more aggressively than they did their first two years. I think Urban has become a red hot poker shoved up their asses. He gave Kelly notice by stealing two ND coaches and flipping Taylor Decker. He finished so strongly that he took a class that was maybe 15th when he was hired to 4th, surpassing scUM along the way. He closed with a flourish. I think the only way they think they can keep up with us is to get ahead of us. That's their race strategy but as many have stated but few seem to have grasped, recruiting is a marathon, not a sprint. There are battles and there are wars; as history's proven time and again, you can lose a few battles and still win the war.

So it ain't over. Not by a long shot. As Tommy Bowden once said when he was asked why SEC and ACC coaches don't back off kids once they commit, "No means go." Urban's said he won't stop recruiting a kid until the kid tells him to stop.

    All is well...
