Meyer Blasted by Dayton Sports Columist

  • When I read Brian Kollars column this morning, I practically fell out of my chair, but recovered and went straight to my laptop and fired off a response. So I don't get accused of misquoting, and save all of you the trouble of looking for the article, here is the full segment, verbatim, of what he wrote, on pg.2 of the Sports Section:
" URBAN MEYER is determinrd to drag the Big Ten into the same cesspool that makes the SEC the king of college football. In other words, a verbal commitment means nothing. Meyer managed to flip several big-time recruits, poaching them from his league brethern. This didn't sit well with the Big Ten's gentlemen. Meyer defended himself last week, proclaiming that he did nothing "unethical." Well, of course he did, but as the SEC knows, getting nasty is the only way to win big".

Needless to say I had to remind Mr Kollars that he was short-sided, and I was very happy his type mentality was no longer recruiting/coaching at OSU; that ALL the recruits Meyer flipped wanted to talk to him and wanted to come to OSU; I mentioned Brian Rolle's comments this week that WISC.continued calling him after he committed, and continued "AFTER he sent his LOI to OSU", where is his outrage about that; I mentioned the cesspool in SEC land is about the reported "slush fund" of tens of millions at one school, the oversigning running rampant at schools like LSU,Auburn, and AL, and that Meyer NEVER oversigned at FL the 7 years he was there; and that perhaps he missed the espn "outside the lines" segment a few months ago, showing actual footage of bettors/coaches exchanging big bucks, for the parents of some very talented peewee/elementary aged boys, so to change teams, that this type of behavior is pervasive throughout SEC land; and of course, I mentioned sour grapes because there is no such thing as a "gentlemen's agreement".

Just my 2 cents, perhaps some of you might like to write mr Kollars and add yours: bkollars@daytondailynews.com

  • He is just salty that UD basketball is in the shitter and is taking it out on OSU.

  • Man this whole o lets not be like the SEC is getting a little ridiculous. You can say what you want about SEC, but they win and they always have the best talent. Im not saying lets go pull a Auburn but i am saying is it poaching when a kid rethinks his choice and then decides OSU is the best place for him. Also i dont know how these writers keep calling it poaching when he wasnt on the job until november. It seems to me everyone was good with OSU being mediocre and didnt want real talent to come this season.

  • I hate that this guy is from Dayton! Just know that from what I have heard and experienced lately, the sports world in Dayton is elated that Urban is the Coach and that he is tearing it up on the recruiting trail. This guy in No Way represents the general ideas and thought of the Dayton Sports scene, both players and coaches, at least from what I hear see and sense. This guy is looking for attention. But I will throw a shout out to the Dayton Dunbar High School BBall squad (the Alma mater of Norris Cole and De'quan Cook and Dan Wilkinson and yours truly!....lol) they are 17-0 and ranked #1 in the State in Division II and possibly over all #1!

  • Until people like this short sighted, and small minded sports writer figure out that college sports are BIG business, and football is the engine that drives this business, there are going to be people that think college sports are for the education. MOST of the recruits who flipped, were kids who had committed to schools that either lost coaches, or were in the middle of a scandle. Expecting a 17-18 year old to feel the same from one day to the next, let alone over a year in some cases, on a committment to a school is a joke. This a way of life now. It's not the SEC's fault, or anyone elses. This has been going on for decades. The guy just isn't smart enough to have looked into it.

Our Current QB is from Dayton (Yes Huber Heights is basically Dayton)........so chill out on the Dayton insults, and UD is a class A academic school with a solid athletic program. The Dayton Area has served OSU greatly!! One reporter does not represent our city!

Louis: can you give us an insider's perspective on Dunbar's Jerrod Clements--6-3, 255 DE? What's your assessment of him?

Ya -- I don't want us to get to the point where we buy our players like Auburn, but I like aggressive recruiting and playing to win on the field. There is nothing wrong with that.

Yea Sure I'd love to! I've actually had the privilege of having him in one of my classes I used to teach at Dunbar. He was in my Sophomore Chemistry Class and from what I've experience the kid definitely has the Academic ability to attend a Big Time University. His size is Legit, the kid is a solid 6' 3" and 255! Has nice speed and quickness. I'd say that he needs the opportunity to receive true college level strength coaching in the weight room. His strength is mostly natural right now. He played most of his career with his hand on the ground at the end spot. He's also played some line Backer but I think he will be a college end some where! He needs to improve his hand techniques and staying disciplined in his leverage techniques (which is no different than a lot of high school players) but he shows flashes of freakish ability. The kid could be a great sleeper prospect, It wouldn't surprise me to see Michigan State offer as they just did with Roger Williamson (a Dunbar Receiver/Athlete from the c/o 2011). If I had a knock on the kid, it would be his discipline on the snap count, I've often seen teams use hard counts to make him jump off sides. Very intense and respectful Kid....could be a sleeper!

Absolutely, that's what I told him, the info was out there, and research it a bit before opening mouth, and inserting foot. And by the way, Dayton is fast becoming a leading technology center of the US, with WPAFB,UD Research Institute, and a host of many other supporting sectors. And actually this was my 1st topic I have ever started, and felt it was about time to do so, since I have been a BIG Buck fan longer than most of your dads, and some of your grandads, seriously. And bringing Meyer on board has lit my fire and got me very excited about the future of buckeye football .

  • Hater's will hate! He needs to get over it......GO MEYER AND GO BUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    NUTTYBAR

  • Here is my biggest problem with all of this "Meyer is the Recruiting Devil" crap...

These guys would have NEVER committed elsewhere if Ohio State wouldn't have had an ongoing investigation. It finished, OSU hired its coach, and those guys 'came home'. No violations, nothing scandalous, just what should have happened all along!!

Thank you. I noticed on his ScoutingOhio tape he's listed at 6-4, 260. Given that he's played with his hand on the ground, what do you think his chances are to put on about 20-25 pounds and play DT in college?

Its time for us to ditch this loser conference. No teams outside of OSU and scUM maybe NEB want to improve what we have. Hell I would even take NW IU NEB MICH ND OSU ILLI Steal 3 or 5 other teams and let the rest to ROT, make a new Conference. Maybe its the beer talking.

No Prob....and just for the record I don't consider myself an expert by any means but I have played and watched the game for most of my life. Since the first time I saw Jerrod I've always felt like he was still growing, so to see the 6' 4" 260 measurables doesn't surprise me. And I've never considered that possibility of him putting on that much weight and playing DT but you could be on to something. As I've said his weight and strength are very natural and raw, so I could see him putting on weight in a college strength program to play DT. Now whether the kid would buy into it and embrace the role is another question......If I had to guess he'd definitely make any sacrifice for a top tier school offer....I wonder if I should mention that to his coach.
