+1 The only way Munger gets in is as an OL.

    Iowa:

Is OL a position that this kid can play? shrug

What's your feeling on his ability to play OL and do you think he's going to be a Buckeye?

I would love for us to squeeze 8-9 more commits in. Im just unsure how we do it. If I had to choose players to get rid of (which I don't want to do) the list would look like this

    1. Domicone 2. Griffin 3. C. Carter 4. W. Ball

I have nothing personal against any of these guys, I just think we could survive without them. I like Ball a lot, but he's never going to see the field imo.

Definitely don't want to get rid of Ball. Maybe Luke Roberts.

Tell me again why would you get rid of Luke Roberts?

    Senseless. no

There are a entire host of guys on the roster that are 3rd/4th position players that would go before Roberts.
Roberts just arrived into camp you are already singling the kid out without one iota of information of whether he can play.

Just look at the Spring game rosters and you will EASILY identify 10 guys that you've never heard of or seen on the field.
Some of these guys are just role players and that's fine. They will never see the field game day and I would bet that cuts (if any) over the next few months will come from this group of kids.

Either way, you got to let this play out.

Sorry, pal, but you don't know what you're talking about. Roberts can f'ing play! The kid is a tackling freak with a nose for the football. The only film you can find is from his junior year...I assume since he committed prior to his senior year, there was no need to put a senior highlight film together. He's from Lancaster, Jim Cordle and Rex Kern and Bobby Carpenter's HS, where he was coached by Carpenter's old man, Rob. He can play some football and the word I heard out of camp was that he was getting reps with the 2nd team D behind Curtis Grant...and that was despite not having been enrolled until spring quarter, which means he missed Mariotti's S&C boot camp.

Unfortunately, by luck of the draw or however the teams were chosen, he'll be on the gray team tomorrow, which also has Grant.Roberts will be wearing #42, which was also worn by...anybody?

95% of the guys whose names you don't recognize are walk-ons. You don't kick the Rudys who are willing to be blocking and tackling dummies off your team when they're the ones paying to be there.

    lol

    Good points!

My point is that you got people calling out kids by name when its clear they don't have clue as to what they are talking about. You pointed out why Roberts belongs on this team. Not to mention, describing Ball as a potential kid to cut was down right ridiculous given what the Bucks did to get him to commit!

We need to be glad he's in C-Bus and not suiting up for someone else.

If a kid is paying it doesn't matter. He's still counts as a roster spot.
If there are going to be 9-10 more kids that leave and roster spots opened up, they have to come from somewhere. Whether they are walk-ons or not is immaterial IMO. A roster spot is a roster spot.

    Time to make room!!!

That's not true. There's a very clear distinction between "roster" and "scholarship." Theoretically, we could have at least 198 kids on the roster--82 on scholarship and the rest walk-ons. There are only 99 numbers but at least two players can wear the same number as long as they're not on the field together. In fact, at the start of the 2011 season, we had three guys who wore 17--backup QB Justin Siems, P Ben Buchanan and S Jeremy Cash but then Cash switched to 13, which was also worn by Kenny Guiton, so that he could play on the punt coverage team and be on the field at the same time as Buchanan. Anyone remember how people thought Guiton was playing special teams because #13 was making tackles? That was Cash.

On the current roster, the following #s have two guys wearing them: 2, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 19, 25, 32, 50, 51, 56, 86, and 88. And that's before a lot of the freshman class has reported for fall camp. In theory, every number could have two guys wearing it, and in some cases, as we saw with 17, even three guys wearing it.

If 9-10 more scholarships open up, they'll have to come from the 66 non-seniors who are scholarship. Nine out of 66 guys leaving for different reasons is 14% attrition. To get to the 81 we have now, we only had about 10% attrition. The deeper the cuts, the closer to bone and good tissue we'll get.

  • Are you guys really having a conversation about which guy that committed to play for the Buckeyes over 100 or so programs you would like to get rid of?

These are your boys, here. And Ball, for example, committed way early because he loved the program. He could have committed to Michigan and no one would be calling for him to be booted from the team to make room for an incoming recruit that hasn't even committed yet.

A coach can put players first and still win. Even if he couldn't one would hope you would put the lives and careers of college kids before victories.

Some of us are talking hypothetically but a few people have chosen to start a list. As I said, that's unfair. We are allowed 82 on scholarship. We currently have 81. We have 15 guys who will exhaust their eligibilty after this season. That gives us 16 scholarships to give to 2013 recruits. We have 10 commitments right now, which leaves 6 to go. After that, if Urban wants more, they're going to have to come from the 66 who will be left after the seniors leave. We can expect at least a few because attrition is always bound to happen due to poor grades, discipline, NFL hardship, frustration, injuries, homesickness, buyer's regret, i.e., a recruit deciding he picked the wrong school--see the aforementioned Jeremy Cash. If you'd been asked on January 2nd to pick 10 guys who would not be at OSU by April 21st, would Cash's name have been on your list? I doubt it. So shit happens.

In any event, much as we may not like it, I can assure you this is a conversation Urban and his "salary cap experts," Mark Pantoni and Brian Voltolini, are having on a regular if not daily basis as they assess their personnel. As the year goes on, they'll be making a list and checking it twice.

    Iowa:

You are spot on with this. My only point previously was that schollies nor roster spots are limitless.
I get what you are saying about the counts and "cutting into the bone", but that analysis although appearing to be correct, was way too deep for me. Especially after the half of bottle of Malbec that I drank last night!!

No team, regardless of the rules or allowances, is going to float a 353 man roster. That would be foolish.
Some of the kids that are the tackling dummies as referenced will get evaluated like it or not. Determinations will be made as to whether they can or will contribute, plain and simple.

If the schollie numbers your have pulled together are right there simply isn't that much room remaining. 6 spots left and its only April? WOW!

Attrition will happen and there's nothing wrong with that. I know this will be me over the next few months waiting to see who gets the boot!!

That's fair enough. Attrition will happen, and every fan base is gonna have a grey area where they just have to trust the coaching staff to deal fairly with the players that don't really fit in, especially when you are having a coaching transition.

Meyer actually comes from a program that may have not been huge on discipline, but was much better than the rest of the SEC on roster and scholarship issues. And I certainly have to trust Hoke to ethically handle the same sort of issues at UM.

Here's hoping both of these staffs to handle it the right way.

Kids "getting the boot" is not the sort of thing you should be looking forward to, whether or not they are expected to be contributors.

Not looking forward to it, but it is a matter of fact on ALL football teams.

What I am looking forward to is Coach Meyer's development of his squad and seeing the moves that he makes that's all. I am not a bleeding heart as I understand the realities of competitive teams and football in general.

Hell even in the pros and in high school there is cut day! I estimate that you aren't familiar with this? shrug

During these times there is always anticipation, anxiety and excitement about who makes the cut and who doesn't.

Sorry if you are offended by football, but like I said in another post. Football ain't for the feint of heart!

Read something about him heading back to SB, but I don't know about the silent commitment thing. Could be a bunch of hooey. Who knows? shrug

Either way, he's got a chance to be a part of something special. If he opts to let it pass him by then so be it.

Heuerman was sitting next to Joey Bosa today during the spring game. Both of them were spotted wearing Buckeye gear. Joey Bosa said this on twitter: "Finally in Cbus!" and later "tonight ;)" Bosa will commit tonight and that may rub off on Heuerman. I'm sure Bosa talked to him today during the game about wanting him to become a Buckeye as well. And Mike's older brother Jeff is a Buckeye so in the end, for those reasons is why Mike will end up a Buckeye in my book. Oh yeah, and Alex Anzalone will commit tonight as well. He called the spring game "an awesome experience."
