Why Would We Accept Taivon Jacobs?

  • michagain said...

This is coming from a die hard Mich fan, wtf are you talking about??? This kid makes me more nervous than any other that you currently have in this class, which is far from weak BTW. Wheels like that in urbs offense=potential score every time his hands touch the ball. Cliche' as hell but you can't teach speed like that. Congrats on the commit also to buckeye nation.

Your right on....the OP has a hard on for Gibson so he feels the need to trash Jacobs and this class..I would take Jacobs over Gibson 7 days a week and twice on Sundays

This class is pretty damn good....and the Ohio kids that got away we really didnt want except for maybe one or two

Two of the players he listed were QBs, who I don't think are better than the one OSU got from Texas.

With a small class (18-20) it's hard to take 2 QBs.

OSU took Barrett, and the Ohio QBs ended up elsewhere. Fortunately neither went to Michigan.

  • Its does not bode well for us when Ohio boys go to TTUN. Those of you who don't understand that, will learn that in the coming years when we have to play against them. I'm not saying we should recruit only Ohio, but in the future we should do a much better job of locking up Ohio than we did this year.

It's often said "To know your future, you must know your past".

UFM will not lose to scUM as much as Cooper did, but with the way he is allowing Hoke to invade Ohio, he won't beat them as often as Tress did, IMO.

I apologize to the people that have the mob mentality and will resort to call me names like "you idiot" because they can't handle someone having an opposing point of view. Maybe these people expect us all to be extreme loyalist and never have a skeptical thought what so ever.

So, OSU needs to recruit nationally to beat the SEC, but OSU needs to recruit Ohio to beat Michigan. Got it.

FNL was Urbans first legit chance of evaluating talent, and most of the kids there were 2014. Next year you will see a much bigger haul of Ohio boys than previous classes with Meyer

  • Is there any way a moderator can delete this thread. It is hurtful and probably had gotten more downvotes (justifiably) than any thread that I can remember.

I think that Jacobs may very well be the second coming of Teddy Ginn Jr. and I'm really glad that he's a member of this class !

That is definitely the most idiotic thing I have heard today. This class is going to be awesome for being on restrictions. I mean we are already top 10 and your saying 2 of the best db's, one of the fastest rising runningbacks, Top 3 tightend in the country, top dual threat qb, a complete beast and one of the top dends, and Marshall is a disappointment? Dude you got problems I think your expectations are beyond what any coach could bring. Your probably one that sees the 3 stars and says oh this guy sucks, you know a lot of pros and stars from Ohio state were 3 stars.

  • Ok guys, can I officially issue a formal apology for what I've said. This class is very talented but I'm getting pissed off that we are settling for 3 star softies when we need to be focusing on landing 4 and 5 star players. I trust Coach Meyer and the staff in what they're doing but I think they've made a couple mistakes.

Evidence, taking a big soft 3 star tackle in Gardner instead of landing Dennis Finley who is a potential 4, maybe 5 star O-lineman or flipping 5 star Johnson from Penn State.

I think with the limited schollies it hurt Urban in Ohio and Hoke took advantage of it as much as I hate to say it. It seems that most of the players Hoke did get verbals from Urban did not seem that interested in so time will tell.

Thats not evidence....thats a lame excuse of trying to prove a point......If Gardner wasnt worthy of an offer, he wouldnt of got it, period. Finley, perhaps....apprently they liked Gardner better. ALso getting the crtique of bently and Pace...I trust their judgement.....Johnson from PSU....we were 3rd on his list....if goes anywhere...its PITT. Lets also not forget its August and there is more than 5 months until signing day...

OL--hardest position to project. They have to do so much growing, and not just physically but intellectually--there's a reason why so few true freshmen start on the OL. They come in as a big, fat 6-5/315 HS all-staters who just had to fall on someone 2/3's his size to rack up a stack of pancakes. Now they've got John Simon and Big Hank in their grill. How is he going to handle 21-23 year old MEN his own size who are older or smarter/wilier or bigger or faster or stronger or meaner or all of the above? Probably not 1-on-1. So he needs to toughen up, maybe bulk up or even lose some weight on top of learning the position. That takes time. He actually needs to learn how to block, how to get leverage, how communicate with his linemates, understand and recognize defensive alignments, know how to handle stunts and blitzes, and all while not forgetting the snap count in the process (see Shugarts--fail). In 7-on-7's, QBs are given 4 seconds to release the football. In OL/DL combine drills, the whistle's blown after 4 seconds. Why? Because unlike HS, blocking in college and the NFL isn't about pancaking a guy. That happens very rarely. It's about keeping the DL occupied for 4-5 seconds so that he's not a factor in the outcome of the play.

So let's not discount the intellectual side of being a good OL. The days of being a big, fat, dumbass as characterized in James Thurber's recollection from his days as a student at OSU when a classmate who was on the football team was so stupid that when called on by the professor to name a mode of transportation sat there stone-faced until everyone in the class began chanting "choo choo" are long gone. For OLs, football's less a game of talent and instinct than it is about intelligence, discipline and teamwork. Kirk Ferentz regularly puts guys in the NFL and his OLs have been consistently rated lower than the guys we've recruited.

Great points Iowa, and it's worth singling out this line from your statement -- having a good position coach, in this case an OL coach, can work wonders.
