I love Ohio State but in all seriousness the exact same fans you just described are on this board.

I agree with Marty and marv. Most people believe what they want to believe regardless of evidence. That's just human nature. Plus, if people hear something over and over again, they are more apt to believe it in time even if they did not believe it before or knew it was wrong. Fan bases tend to tell themselves their teams are the best. Look at Notre Dame. They've been largely irrelevant for 20 years but still believe they're a premier program. At the current pace, by the year 2080, sports broadcasters will be channeling their inner Abe Lincoln and saying Notre Dame last won a bowl game against a top 5 opponent four score and seven years ago, but ND fans will probably still think themselves a major player in the college football landscape.

Michigan has had an impressive recruiting haul so far, especially for OL, but so have we. Both teams are filling their respective needs with players suited to different styles. It'll be interesting to see the clashes on the field. My early guess is that Michigan is going to be a much better team soon, but I think the improvement we'll see out of the Buckeyes will be more dramatic (not hard to do compared to last season) and will have us in the national championship picture (officially) in year two of the Urban regime. Hopefully, that's not just my inner homer coming out.

For the record, since 1940, when most analysts agree that modern college football took shape, OSU leads scUM 35-34-4. That is 72 years of football and we lead that time period. Anything before 1940 is largely irrelevant because so few remain alive that witnessed it.

A lot of our fans tend to do the same thing. Sometimes, it's true that we really didn't want a kid (Taco, McCray, Ringer, Bolden) or weren't extremely high on him (Gedeon, Strobel) even if we did offer a scholarship. But there's definitely some we'd like to have, or at least really wanted at the time - Tuley-Tillman, Pipkins, Dymonte Thomas, Wormely, James Ross, etc. If Treadwell picks Michigan, he'll be in that category. But like their insane fans, the moment they commit to our rival we act like we didn't want them anyway.

While I understandyour position, i think my reasoning is sound, albeit not thorough enough. I made a blanket statement and did not drill down enough. I still contend that college football prior to 1940 IS largely irrelevant because it is difficult to remotely compare to today's game. Moreso, i made the comment to prove a point that scUM clings to the overall series when the majority of the difference in records occured prior to 1940. Concur about the birth of christ and all, which was a great example of portraying my vagueness

Yeah, and he's one of them. Right now m**h*g*n has more 4 stars then us and less 3 stars, and he posts something "all i will say is i hope they keep getting the 3 star kids and we will pull in the top 4 and 5 star kids from aroung the country." Wow!!!
