Why is Hoke out Recruiting Meyer 16 to 5

  • Brady Hoke already has 16 verbals. What's up with that. We have Urban and he only has 5. Let's brain storm this one.

I will take quality over quantity any day of the week.......remember, no one is signed, sealed in delivered yet. Meyer finished 2012 recruiting pretty impressively.....I will tale my chances.

Lets look at the recruits Meyer is going after vs the recruits hoke is going after......nuff said

  • I am not worried. Just curious. But most of their guys are 4 star.

  • A few of the Michigan verbals are in spite of Ohio State. Some of those kids were upset about not getting an offer from Urban.

How about we stop making threads about this? Let's start there. It's March!!!!! Who cares how many recruits they have at this point. They only have one kid from Ohio with an offer from us...Meyer will get the players he wants and he'll get them when he gets them. A fast start means nothing (i.e. Texas the last few years)!!!!!

  • OK, Time to kill this thread. Got some good thoughts. Thanks and Go Bucks!

Exactly. I don't look at it as a "coup," since it's so early and these guys still need to be evaluated. I myself sometimes get caught up in the whole star game, but it's literally a crap shoot. It's a guess based on potential. Sometimes they are right, many times they are not. I think it's dumb to fill up so early and basically be off the board by early spring. I trust Urban and his talent evaluation. We all need to relax and acting like a jilted ex boyfriend and jealous of Michigan. Urban will get it done and it proves to me he's taking his time to get it right. I'm not even worried.

  • I believe that if Urban had been involved in last year's recruiting from the start he would not have offered at least 1/3 of the kids who signed. Although he finished with a very good class I think we signed 7 or 8 kids who will rarely if ever see the field outside of scout team (although it classy that he didn't pull any offers from kids that had already committed). He needs to be very selective this year to make up for some of the questionable recruits that are filling space on our roster and because of the limited number of ships we have to offer over the next couple years. Remember, unlike the SEC, the B1G has allowed its members to offer 4-year scholarship deals. It is my understanding that that is all we are offering these days.

Great insight. I agree. And i also agree it was classy not to pull scholarships of those kids who probably never see the field. I fully support Urban and what his staff are doing. Proud to be a Buckeye.

  • lol, I remember all this recruiting talk about how Meyer wouldnt pass Hoke last year, haha but what happened in 2 months? haha. All of our recruits are elite, its still soooooo early. Meyer has been on vacation in Hawaii, on the buckeye cruise, Miami, and moving the last month. He hasnt even been recruiting. Once recruits come to spring practice they will verbal.

i brain stormed this for about 10 seconds. Hear is the question I asked myself: Would I trade our 5 for their 16? The answer: No.

  • I looked at their list. From that list, we would take Fox, Bosch, Thomas, and Tuley-Tillman. Morris, as good as he is, doesn't fit our system. We offered Deveon Smith, but I think there are other backs we'd take ahead of him who are off our board. I think we'd be happy to have him, but he wasn't a 'must have' guy, especially when you consider our depth chart. The other 10 guys are guys we wouldn't offer unless we were turned down by everyone we're currently after.

And those 4-5 guys we'd take in our class, that's as of NOW. If we land some of the guys we're after, some of those guys we'd take now from their class might be guys we wouldn't take in the end. Our class will be smaller than theirs, but we'll have more top-end talent.

I wouldn't trade any of our top 4 commits for any of theirs. Our fifth commit, Evan Lisle, is pretty solid as well.

The star system does not matter. It is the coaches ability to effectively develop players physically and mentally that makes a championship caliber team or not. Remember, the 2008 Florida recruiting class was number 1 in the country and heralded as one of the best recruiting classes of all time, but they have yet to win anything.

Because one Buckeye has always been as good as 3 Wolverweenies.

Hoke and Urban have separate strategies. We don't need to do any more brainstorming than that. But if you want to put some thoughts on index cards and mail them in to the WHAC, good luck with that.

Separately, it's hard to take a question seriously from someone who has a poodle as their avatar. This is Bucknuts. Everyone here's a 6-10/280 biker bar bouncer, chews glass, has a tattoo that says "Mom...is a bitch," and owns a pit bull. If you want to be taken seriously, you need to get on board, brother.

+1 although I'd also take Shallman as a FB/H-back and Butt as a TE if Heuerman doesn't pan out. But Shallman aspires to be the world's next great white hope at running back since Toby Gerhart and Butt decided he'd rather take the sure thing and commit now than wait.

Hoke has created a sense of urgency similar to what Urban did when he was hired and had two months to fill in some serious holes (OT, LB, DE). There was this sense of urgency--"get on board now because spots are filling up fast." scUM's got 82 kids on scholarship but most of them are RichRod's recruits. Hoke's strategy has been to a) sew but Michigan, which he has, and b) replicate Urban's sense of urgency while capitalizing on Urban's decision not to rush the Ohio kids and it's worked. But by filling his class so fast, he risks missing on other kids in the months to come.

Hoke's put together a nice class and by virtue of most likely being bigger than ours, may also end up being rated ahead of ours based on sheer volume. But quality trumps volume and that's what Urban's strategy is. He's not settling for less than the best.

Its pretty simple scooter. Jelly bean Hoke is giving out scholarships like condoms at a pussy cat dolls concert and Urb is being a little more conservative. Hope that helps.
