Why is Hoke out Recruiting Meyer 16 to 5

  • Catdaddyh said...

I don't know how you got your numbers, but you are correct. As of today, with the current roster numbers, and the players graduating, and the 16 recruiting, that adds up to 82 in 2013.

I came up with 82 differently. I looked at scUM's current roster. Then I cross-referenced it against each of their recruiting classes from 2007-2012 and checked off the guys they gave scholarships to, which left their walk-ons (although I assume Jordan Kovacs is on scholarship). So unless other non-senior walk-ons have been given scholarships, the total added up to 82 out of a maximum of 85, including 17 seniors. So that's 20 (17 seniors + 3 open slots). I'm guessing OT Taylor Lewan, who will be a RS JR and was second team B1G and is projected as a 1st round draft choice, goes NFL. That makes 21. (Fitzgerald Toussaint may go hardship, too, with a good year ala Antonio Pittman who knew that with Beanie hot behind him, he wasn't likely to have the same kind of year sharing the ball.) If only 4 more kids transfer, quit, get kicked off or flunk out, Hoke can easily get this class to 25.

Meanwhile, we have 81, which is 1 under our max, plus 15 seniors, which makes 16 our current ceiling for scholarships in 2013. We'd need 9 kids to go hardship (Hankins, Roby), transfer, quit, get kicked off or flunk out to get the 2013 class up to 25. I can see 3-5 but not 9 although it's not impossible. As upperclassmen get buried in the depth chart behind underclassmen or don't bring the kind of competitiveness Urban demands, it's entirely plausible we could see that kind of roster attrition.

I believe that if Urban had been involved in last year's recruiting from the start he would not have offered at least 1/3 of the kids who signed. Although he finished with a very good class I think we signed 7 or 8 kids who will rarely if ever see the field outside of scout team (although it classy that he didn't pull any offers from kids that had already committed). He needs to be very selective this year to make up for some of the questionable recruits that are filling space on our roster and because of the limited number of ships we have to offer over the next couple years. Remember, unlike the SEC, the B1G has allowed its members to offer 4-year scholarship deals. It is my understanding that that is all we are offering these days.

For the class of 2012, nine of the 12 B1G schools awarded 4-year scholarships. The three that didn't were Indiana, Purdue and Minnesota.

"Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith told The Plain Dealer that players could still lose their scholarships if they don't fulfill academic or off-the-field requirements. But the multiyear scholarship prevents coaches from running off players if better talent has been recruited at their positions or who no longer fit the team's style of play."

  • Think of it like food.....Hoke eat anything anytime, gets after it as soon as possible, if he can get he it he takes it, good or bad whatever, quality or scraps whatever. Meyer is in to fine dining, willing to wait and enjoy, takes his time and enjoys, only indulges in the high quality, etc etc.

Nice analogy. Still, that doesn't mean I'm not hungry...just not starving and ready to devour anything in my path.

Brady Hoke already has 16 verbals. What's up with that. We have Urban and he only has 5. Let's brain storm this one.

Look at the offers their guys have not the stars.....stars don't mean shit

Funny how people say this, but the players with 4-5 stars usually have offers from top schools like USC, Alabama, Texas, LSU, Notre Dame, Florida State, Florida, Penn State and Nebraska -- and vice versa; whereas 2-3 star players typically get offers from MAC, Conference USA, and Mountain West conference schools.

Generally, BOTH star-level and offers are indicative of a player's past performance and future prospects.

Yup. every manner in which you could evaluate the Michigan class, be it star rankings or offers, places it at an elite level. Attempting to denigrate that class makes one look biased and lose credibility. Nevertheless, i expect OSU to also finish with an elite class too.

  • UFM had zero 2012 recruits as late as last November. How did he do in just two months? How many months does he have left until NSD? Relax.

  • I think scooter is a plant!!! 2nd, the reason I know he is a plant is who is that dumb to not understand that Urban is going after more national kids than meatchicken. For example, we have two top 5 players at their positions and a top 10 RB. Meatchicken is kids are not rated as highly. Our overall rating for recruits is higher also even though they have more kids by far committed.

Prescott is in the NFL. Yea you could say he had a TERRIBLE career.

Screw the No Fun League. We're not talking how he's done with the Ravens and Patriots.

We're talking OSU v. Michig@n and his record against OSU was 1-3 with the only W his freshman year, but otherwise, yeah, you're right--it's not quite as bad as 0-4 Mike Hart and John Henne.

Rumor has it that there was speculation that Taco may have been eaten by Coach Brady Hoke. Happy to hear that that was just a rumor.

In any event OSU is now up to 7 commits. Look for OSU to pick up several more after the Spring Game, and several more after the regular season. With a class that will likely number in the 18-20 range it is better to be slow and steady to avoid making any errors.

    BuckeyeMark

  • Remember Hoke has a year ahead of Urban and has been recruiting these guys for over a year. Plus OSU is changing style both offensively and defensively. Look at the QB position as the past staff was high on Zaire and this staff not so high. The result he committed to Notre Dame.

  • The fact is the only reason OSU did so good last year was because PSU was dead and they stool every one of our recruits. And that's all right it's way the game goes, but don't go thinking OSU is all high in mighty because they stool candy from a little 5 year old. And Myer is going after the same recruits Hoke is. A matter of fact is that Hoke is beating Urban. Deveon Smith, dymonte thomas, Wyatt Shallman, Shane Morriss, Adam Breneman, and a little more. I'm not saying Urban is not a great recruiter and I know OSU is a great program and better than PSU ( not by much). But don't make excuses for Urban, he won the battle but Hoke is winning the war. The ratting is extremley close on 247, i think about .3 somthing. Hoke is taking away some of Urban's prospects. I know that OSU will end up doing well ( not as good as Michigan though). I don't understand why were getting mad that other BIG 10 programs are doing well. Were going to see some damn good football in the future with UM, OSU, PSU, UN and MSU all doing well!

    lol

This is just laughably absurd. Why do you think Penn State even got them to commit in the first place? Because Ohio State had no coach. Then yours was found to have essentially allowed child molestation for years by one of his employees and was fired. Then Urban was hired, moved in, and asked the kids if they had any interest in being Buckeyes, and all of them did, so they flipped commitments.

  • Now 16-7 and Meyer has landed a lot more players who are sought after by the bigger schools!
Hoke has several who he battled Toledo and Akron for! Numbers are usually deceiving!!

  • Not only is it 16-7 now but the Buckeyes have like 5 of there top recruits getting ready to bust a move right after the spring game in 2 weeks then the last 5 will be the best of the best. We only have 17 from what I'm hearing maybe 18!!!! Were ok young man no panic in Columbus

I don't agree with you about the only reason we recruited well was because of Psu problems you guys became your own worst enemy don't blame us and actually you are getting of real easy what went on at your school is the worst of anything. I'VE EVER SEEN. INCLUDING SMU....HORRIFYING SIMPLY HORRIFYING! !! I do agree about 1 thing and there will be some good football in the Big ...

Not entirely true. Just within the past couple of weeks, we got a commitment from Ezekiel Elliott, a player Notre Dame was recruiting hard and thought they had. I appreciate the concern from scUM fans about our 2013 class but we're going to be just fine.
