With Winston eliminating us, is Jones enough?

  • Do we look at other QBs or wait til next year?
I'm not sure what the coaches want but seems to me that we have other pressing needs for this class. Jmo.

  • I think three is enough for next year. Jones could be a beast. Worst comes to worse, Guiton may be serviceable with a good QB coach. Focus QB search on 2013.

  • I want that guy from Toledo I dont know what school I think it was st.Johns but he very accurate passer and has decent mobile ability

  • Probably wait til 2013. With Malik Zaire and Travon Chapman on the radar, plus Jalin Marshall as an athlete

  • We're fine with 3 scholarship QBs. We also have a walk-on in Justin Siems, if it ever came down to the 4th QB.

  • I believe Miller, Guiton, and Jones will be enough for what amounts to a shortened season anyway. And aren't there a couple of former spread QBs already on the roster? Verlon Reed was a great one. If we get to the point that we have to go with a fourth stringer the season is lost anyway. Taking a QB in this class merely for depth would not provide enough distance from the current crop. IMHO, it would be a waste of a scholarship, as well as a waste of time for the recruit (see Guiton) since Meyer has his choice of two or three great Ohio spread QBs next year.....

I still don't get Zaire as a QB. He completed 44% of his passes for 700 yards, only 5 TDs. He ran for 1100 in an option attack for an 10-1 team. He averaged about 160 ypg TO. If we're recruiting Zaire, it has to be as an ATH, another Marshall.

Tra Chapman's QB stats were much better--per MaxPreps, he completed 68% of his passes over 2,800 yards, 29 TDs and only 4 INTs for a 10-2 team. Also rushed for 757 yards and scored 9 TDs. Now those are a spread QB's stats. Almost 300 ypg TO. Transferred from Pick Central, so he'd know Jacoby Boren. Per Tom Lemming, Chapman "shows good running ability, arm strength, accuracy, explosiveness, he can make people miss, and is as athletic as they come. Also plays FS on defense."

Aside from Winston and a few others, most of 2012's Top 100 QBs are committed, so unless Urban and Herman are out there trying to steal someone away, we will probably have to go with 3 scholarship QBs in 2012.

Here's a new name I'm going to throw out there just for fun: Robert Gregory is a 6-3/200 QB from Chicago Simeon who committed to Arkansas in August but now Rivals, ESPN and Scout are all showing him as uncommitted. He's got offers from Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Toledo and Minnesota. He just got back from a visit to Purdue over the weekend. Rivals has him #12 among 2012's dual-threat QBs, Lemming's got him as the 7th best combo QB, 161st overall in the class of 2012. Here's Lemming's 2011 preseason scouting report: "Last season (2010), he dominated the Chicago public league from start to finish and was the most talked about ball player in a very talented league. He's a dangerous scrambler, can create in the open field, and he's a natural leader who showed improvement with every game during the 2010 season. His footwork is excellent and he's an elusive athlete who can be deadly when throwing the ball on the run." Sounds like a spread QB to me.

Oh, and Gregory's HS teammate is Jordan Diamond so it's not as if the staff is going to be unfamiliar with him--any film they've watched of Diamond is going to have Gregory in it.

  • Cardale could move right past Guiton on depth chart once he learns the system. I saw him play in all star game and he looks to have the poise and tools to be a terrific QB.

No offense but Tom Lemming is a clown/hack/joke

None taken but I'd say the same for Luginbill and Haubert. They all shameless self-promoters who've found a very profitable niche collecting and selling information to people like us. And yet somehow Boise, TCU, Houston have managed to put together great programs without great recruits. All recruiting experts are over-rated. The only guys' whose opinions matter to me are the coaches. Those who can coach, do; those who can't, blog.

Even if you dismiss Lemming, Rivals has Gregory rated 12th among combo QBs.

And I'm still looking for someone--anyone?--to explain to me how Zaire's a BCS-quality QB? Marshall put up comparable passing stats and much better rushing stats but no one's saying he'll play QB in college.

  • Jones is enough.

Zaire will blossom his SENIOR season. He still has one more year. I think the rankings is accurate on him. Compare apples to apples plus WR's can help out a lot on QB reviews. Zaire made great passes and ton were dropped. I am just saying you have to catch the ball too. Zaire will be a great QB at the college level. I am happy that we are recruiting him. I believe he bleeds Scarlet and Grey.

  • Because of the offense Zaire is in it doesn't pass often and when he does he is very good at it. Watch his video on youtube. He doesnt have recievers and that hurts his stats. Also this kid throws a great blain qns simple ..all with great release. You can't get caught up with stats or talent this kid is a quarterback put him in a system where they pass a lot and he would have over 3000 to 4000 yards. You obviously don't know qb or their potential osu Wisconsin Indiana cincy. And others do.
