I am looking for real explanations - not opinions because I am capable of forming my own opinions which may or may not be even close to accurate...so...does anyone have solid reasons why tOSU's recruiting has been less then extraordinary?? 2012's only commit was a NR kid who has shown some promise but still tOSU missed out on their top choices -- so far 2013 has the #58 & 74th ranked players in the country.... 2014 so far has the 19th, 51st & 129th rated players and no true center that tOSU has been accustomed to seeing inside. All of this amazes me due to the success of the program during Matta's time --- which may actually be the reason for the drop off...using my experience while I was in H.S. in the late 80's...there was a joke that Earle Bruce was so over confident in his attitude towards recruiting that he didnt put a lot of effort in chasing down elite talent or any talent really - almost as if he felt like kids would feel so honored they had received a scholarship offer from tOSU that they would commit right then & there no matter who else had offered so there was an expectation that kids would come to them begging to be able to play for tOSU....i hope thats not the issue with the bball program...so anyway thats not how i feel things truly are - it more or less had just occurred to me.
I can't see Thad being over confident in anything that's just not his personality.
over the next couple of weeks...they are about to get some kids excited about THE ohio state university basketball program......
I think its really about the competition and quality of Ohio recruits. When Thad started, IU was in shambles and he was able to go in and steal away Oden and Conley. Crean may be a jackass, but he has really done a good job recruiting and now guys are staying in Indiana. Calipari to KY has also increased the competition, especially with the Chicago area. Beilien is a better recruiter than Tommy Amaker. We have already lost guys that we were in on to IU and KY (Anthony Davis, Noah Vonleh). KY is the it team right now and a lot of the guys they are getting come from the midwest where Thad was king for a short while. Throw in MSU, Illinois, Wisconsin, ND, Purdue and there are a lot of solid programs in the midwest competing for talent.
Its also about a lack of talent (or perceived lack) in Ohio. Thad has done a pretty good job sealing up the state, a few get away like Payne but most of the guys he offers from Ohio go to OSU. He has certainly failed to offer some guys that ended up being really good, but for the most part has not lost out on a lot of guys with offers.
OSU is in on a lot of talent in 2014 and I expect that to be a top-10 class when done.
Lastly, OSU has had limited scholarsips the past few years. Buford was the only senior last year, Ravenel is the only senior this year, and even in 2011 we only had three seniors. Plus, there was uncertainty as to whether guys like Sully or Thomas would leave early. IU seems to just offer guys whether there are slots or not, but Thad does not. Again 2014 should be a good year because we have some unfilled slots from transfers plus three seniors (two if Thomas leaves this year, but either way his slot probably will not be filled until 2014).
Osu should get a major boost in recruiting after Thad has shown he is one of the top coaches in the country. Buckeye fans already knew this but some across the country think he's just an overachieving recruiter. I think we land Okafor and Jones in the 14 class because Thad has shown he likes to play 2 point guards for long periods of time and Okafor knows we need his presence inside which means automatic starter. A deep run in tourney this year and next will only help 15 and 16 recruiting.
all very good points!! thank you gentlemen
Every year the prestige of OSU and Matta grows, but right now the top of the top, unless they are from the Ohio/Indiana area where Matta is held in extremely high esteem, will look first at Duke, UNC, Kentucky, and Kansas. Even Izzo doesn't get the recruits that those 4 iconic programs get.
Also keep in mind that this is a very young team. They lose Ravanel and DT, but I believe pretty much everyone else comes back.
