Matta and recruiting

  • It is good to see Matta finally getting some commitments - and they appear to be solid players all with room to grow - but I don't see any blue chippers such as DT, Oden, or MC Jrs. on the horizon. There don't appear to be any blue chip prospects coming out of Ohio, and I'd guess we are going to have a tougher time in Indiana and Illinois with the emergence of the programs in these states.

I hope Matta gets into the game with Mickey Mitchell (football recruit Mike Mitchell's younger brother) out of Plano, Texas, class of 2015. He looks like one of Rick Barry's sons on film as a HS underclasssman. Very impressive skill set; a 6'7" agile and athletic kid that can handle the ball and pass, get to the rim and finish, with nice form on his jump shot.

  • Agree......I was just thinking about this yesterday and your comments about getting players from Indiana or Illinois due to their emergence recently sparked some thought......

Do you think Matta would have locked in Conley and Oden if IU is where they are today back then? I am guessing not....but just my opinion.

With the conference becoming so much stronger it will be interesting to see if he can get those guys out of state/blue chippers to come to OSU. Recruiting ability will be tested.....

2014 is shaping up nicely and in reality we cannot argue with the results. He has accomplihsed quite a bit in 9 years. i went through and was looking at Matta's career (and last 9 years) and comparing it to Calipari, Pitino, Boeheim, Izzo, Coach K, Roy Williams, Billy Donovan.......all have similar winning %'s.....good runs in the NCAA tourney......conf titles etc. ONly thing missing is the actual title with Matta. (NIT Champs in '08 doesn't count of course :)) And keep in mind....his first season we were ineligble for post season play and we were 20-12.

  • Interestingly enough, 2014 could shape up to be the top recruiting class in the country if things fall into place. Bates-Diop is blowing up, Bell is just now becoming a recognizable name, and Tate is a player. If Matta can convince Okafor this is the place for him, he's also then got a great shot at Tyus Jones. If not, maybe he can pull Jaquan Lyle out of Evansville, IN.

Believe it or not, no matter what happens with the rest of the 2014 class, 2015 and 2016 could be incredible as well. Ohio has several stud players in those classes, along with Mickey Mitchell, who you'd think has to be seriously considering Ohio State. Guys like VJ King, Seth Towns, Luke Kennard, Carlton Bragg, Esa Ahmad, etc. are all Ohio kids who are expected to be big time recruits. OSU is also already pursuing several highly talented out of state kids in the 2015 class.

I'm not writing off Matta as a recruiter yet. He is still two years removed from an outstanding class that makes up most of this year's team. They may not be stars (yet), but they are solid 4-year players.

  • Matta is a proven recruiter and coach. It is unfortunate we fell to Kentucky in Sullinger's freshman year, as that is the best team (relative to the competition) I recall having at TOSU in my lifetime. I thought it was awesome that the starters were all Ohio kids.

It's good to know there is more talent on the horizon in Ohio; I wasn't aware of the guys you are talking about (I enjoy following HS ball, but I live out of state). As bcroft notes above, if Indiana were ranked as highly as they are now a few years back, Matta would have had a much harder time making a run at Oden/Conley.
