Since it was in Fridays Boarding House, thought I'd see what folks think about his recruiting. It definitely has been a quiet two years. I think there are a number of factors at play. One, the talent hasn't been great in Ohio the last couple of years compared to years past, certainly there haven't been any can't miss types. Not a big concern as this happens.
I am a little concerned about Matta's ability to recruit regionally. I don't think he is slipping, but the competition has gotten a lot stronger. IU, UK, Scum and Louisville all in the top 5 makes it tough. It is almost impossible to out recruit Calipari (money talks?). When Matta had his run of great classes, IU was down, Michigan was down, UK was down, the biggest competition seemed to Mich. St. I think Anthony Davis would have been at OSU had UK not made a resurgence. The good news: the Midwest has been flat out loaded with talent recently.
I do expect to see a top-10 class come in for 2014, OSU has been a fixture over the past 8 years and with all that talent leaving from the roster kids will see a chance to play on the big stage. I also think a little more shine should come on last years freshman class this year, I expect to see breakouts for most of those guys, which certainly makes it feel like we are getting top shelf talent. We are a little spoiled by seeing freshman come in and play great, but that doesn't always happen (See Thomas, Diebler, Lenzelle Smith, Evan Turner). Except for Diebler, all those guys came off the bench as freshman (Turner might have started a few games) and turned out to be good to great players.
For one they haven't had the roster room the past two years. Shoot the only player on the team this year that may leave early for the nba is Thomas. Ravenel is the only outgoing senior everyone else will most likely be back.
The talent really hasn't been that great in the state of Ohio. Ohio's talent is extremely bad. Nigel Hayes kid is the only kid they have talked about recently, he is decent but he's not Turner type of player. Indiana got some decent players but no great players. Indiana is doling out the cash like it is going out of style. AAU coach and the foreign player Tom Crean got was B.S. Tom Crean is a crap coach (hasn't won a conference championship in the Big Ten or the Big East) but he pays under the table and no one investigates Indiana and Kentucky. No offense but the game at indiana last year was B.S. with the refs giving Indiana the game. Kentucky is dirty as hell and no one ever investigates them. OSU gave a penny to a recruit or a handbag, ESPN would have OSU as their storyline. Chicago Sun Tribune had Calipari dead to rights with Anthony Davis on NCAA violations and the paper wimped out not reporting the truth.
Matta is a good coach and there were just too many young players on this team right now to recruit other players. A lot of these players are going to be here three years or more. This website never reports any recruits unless you want to mortgage your house to get a subscription. No offense $9.00 a month is a B.S. Fee!
do you recommend another site with more osu bb info? would like to get more info also.
not a VIP
Were we recruiting that Nigel Hayes hard or what? Just saw he chose Wisconsin. Didnt see any threads about it
All indications confirm your post that the talent level has indeed NOT been that great lately in the state of Ohio. Hopefully, that will change in time for the 2014 recruiting class.
I agree that Matta is a good coach and a good recruiter but we haven't had many open slots lately and the comraderie among recruits who want to play together seems to be a factor.
We're not yet a "national team" that can recruit nationally like some of the traditional basketball powerhouses but Matta has kept the team in the national spotlight with a truly outstanding run and perhaps we'll become better at recruiting nationally in the near future. Of course, if Ohio talent takes a turn for the better, we'll be fine.
I too wish there was more basketball info on this site and I'm a premium member.

We had offered, not sure how hard we pursued him. I think there was some ugliness when his brother left the football program, I know his parents were on one of the boards pissed off about some of the posts that were essentially calling Kenny soft and a quitter and untalented. Rabid fans can be a good thing, but not always. I see this as a pretty big whiff, we are thin in the frontcourt and as far as I know don't lead for anyone else in the 2013 class. We already have three open scholarships and at least one more open next year, plus another likely in Thomas and possibly one more in Ross. We have two commits, so its not good to have three or four open scholarships IMO. A transfer after this year wouldn't be bad since we have a ton of guys leaving after next season, but who knows who if anyone will be available.
Ohio State seemed to have the inside track for Nigel Hayes over the past couple years, but Wisconsin never backed down -- and it paid off.
IMO the new rule requiring student athletes to actually attend class and remain in school 2 years will benefit a lot of schools. Kentucky will not be taking 5 of the top ten recruits every damn year anymore. They will have to reload their NBA roster every other year which will force top players to choose other schools. The new rule should help the midwest schools in sharing the talent.
When do you think the NCAA is going to look at UK? Their run has to be something like UCLA was experiencing back in their NC days. Craziness!
Only a couple guys still have TOSU on their list. Dakari Johnson who just recently reclassified and Tony Trocha who according to espn recruiting site no one has offered for some reason. Both I think are unlikely. IMHO since Anya dropped us and Vonleh chose Indiana I think Thad is concentrating on 2 or 3 prime recruits in 2014 class that want to play together as well as a few others. Possibly taking 5or6 in the class.
It seems it is so difficult for a football school to recruit the top bball talent consistently. All the teams mentioned above KY, IU Louisville are bball schools.
What in the world would make yout think Ross would be gone? He hasn't done anything yet.
What new rule?
Not to mention Williams signing with West Virginia, i didn't see that coming at all and still don't think i do.
To finish of this class i don't know why Matta doesn't recruit the heck out of Parker and Wiggins. I thought Parker had a high interest in OSU but don't see them listed any longer.
if Matta is going to compete in the Big Ten we can't be out of the 25 classes two years in a row, with the turnover in players in basketball 2 down years will be tough especially when Michigan, Indiana, Michigan St Purdue, Illinois and wisconsin are all in the top 25.
Didn't Parker commit to ucla?
Your thinking Tony Parker in the 2012 class. He means Jabari Parker in the 2013 class but he dropped us a while back.
I just hope Matta don't go after roster filler players because of interior depth issues.
is Deontae Hawkins in play?
Thanks, we never had any real shot at Jabari.
Bucknuts BB coverage sucks and I know a better site. It's called Buckeye Sports Bulletin. I get the paper for free and the site is fairly reasonable. There are other sites out there as well.
Some mock drafts have him as a first rounder. If Cook and Mullins can be first rounders and not start at OSU, Ross certainly is a possibility. 6'8" guys that can put the ball on the floor and shoot the three are still prized by the NBA.
Lol. Ross only played 11 minutes and had zero points. Obviously he isn't producing. Leaving early my @ss
