This guy is beginning to play like a complete super star, from shooting to defense, he is most likely the best athlete to ever play basketball at Ohio State. I think by the end of next year he will be a first team All American.
The ceiling is unlimited for this guy,we see him get closer and closer to taking games over.
just has to work on his outside shot. plays great defense and the guy flies. always keeps you at the end of your seat.
that dunk attempt over hardaway jr today was nasty... would've been nastier if he would have put it in. brought back glimpses of oden's attempted dunk over georgetown's green. :)
He is definitely starting to show a huge ceiling wow he can throw down. He also made some outside shots this game which was nice. That alley oop was what saved the game tho IMO. UNREAL. Also completly shut down his opposing match up, although he was a shooter lol. It will be interesting to see how he develops because it is starting to look as he is emerging as another star on this team. IMO he will not be as skilled offensively as some of the other stars to go through Ohio State but definitely a insane athlete and great defender.
His shooting form is pretty good and there has definitely been some improvement since last season, but he has a way to go. If he continues to gain confidence and improve his offensive mindset and shot selection, this will go a long way. He needs to work on battling for position in order to rebound better, but he seems to play hard on defense. Thompson appears to be an unselfish player, a solid teammate, and coachable.
Jumping and dunking are awesome and fun to watch, but that's just part of much bigger picture. A guy with his type of athletic ability and mindset has a high upside.
I totally agree! Def needs weight room that will help his rebounding. He is a natural 3 love to see him be able to play 2 or 3 that would really help the rotation and everyone knows that you have to be a great defender to get on the floor for Matta.
He looks like he has put the time in in the gym with his shooting, now it only gets better.
That dunk attempt could have cost Ohio State the game against Michigan. It was run-the-clock time in the game not turnover time and his offensive foul came with at least 20 seconds left on the shot clock. With fans and the media fawning over Thompson's high-flying dunks, kid's getting the idea that's his job on the team -- spectacular dunks. They're great to watch, but not in crunch time when you're trying to hold on to a lead and you have to run over a defender to get it off.
Calm down coach we won! Most coaches want aggressiveness,at the end of the game is not the time, foul could have gone either way.
Um I'm going to agree with wejisbuck on this one. That dunk attempt was really dumb. He had a WIDE OPEN man under the basket right beside him for an easy basket. His athletic ability should be used for easy baskets that can't be stopped by lesser defenders, not for intensity.
Thomas was also a offender of the same thing (On a side note). Wide open man under the basket... Alligator arms and it's a miss. O well, it happens i guess.
I don't see the hype on Sam Thompson. The guy Ave averages like 7 points a game with a few rebounds and somehow he is a star. Don't see it
Superstar?? What a joke. Can't shoot, can't dribble.... He should have his minutes reduced.
The spectacular dunks must be losing their luster because Sam seems to be on the bench more in the 2nd half.
First team aa ??????? Fred are you living in the stoneage ?
Thompson needs to jump center to start the game..Williams is horrible at it for his 6'-11" frame....I can't understand why Matta has not changed this!
I personally like his 3 point shot simply because he's 5000% better than last year! I would've never guessed he'd be this far right now with it after seeing him miserably shoot last year (just like Scott who improved a ton as well)
Baby Pterodactyl steps my friends, who was the leading scorer today??????
Once again! He is on pace to be a superstar!! Who is laughing now?
Wow! nice call DB L chin

Bench must be good huh Trackshoe?
What you see now mr VIP lol
he had a good game, a very good game for him, but lets let him put several good games together before we annoint him. lets see what he does from the outside against michigan state. i doubt if craft will get seven layups again so points from thompson will definitely be needed. it would certainly take a lot of pressure off thomas' shoulders to have another good outside shooter. this should be a very tough physical game. i hope the refs call it equally tight or loose for both teams.
If he puts on 10-12 lbs. of muscle this summer, improves his grip strength, keeps working on his shot (his form is fine now and he's been hitting most of his shots the last couple games, just needs to continue to build confidence), and I agree he could improve his handle a little, he easily could be a real stud for us next year. I think he's improved the most this year of anyone.
Along with Thompson, Scott and Ross have also improved this season. As a result, we are looking pretty strong going into the NCAA tournament and I think we will be pretty solid going into next year.
Thompson is really gaining some traction with his mid-range and outside jump shooting. He is showing a nice stroke and he appears to be gaining confidence. I like the high arc and backspin. Maybe Jent's coaching influence is starting to pay dividends.
He has the athletic potential of a Len Bias type of player. With another strong showing today (Wisconsin is a tough match-up for us, and we need Thompson to hit double figures today), good play in the NCAA's, and a strong off-season, he could really be a marquis guy for us going into his junior year.
Let's give Fred Flintstone some props for seeing the potential in Thompson as he is developing before our eyes.

Freddy, I love your support of Thompson and I to believe the sky's the limit with this kid. His outside shot improved dramatically over the course of the year. I now believe he needs to work on being able to take his man off the dribble and attack the rim. It's strange to me that during the B1G and NCAA tourney that Ross showed an ability to get in the lane and to the rim and yet Thompson does not have that in his game yet. Thompson is far more athletic than Ross. He should be a nightmare for the opposition off the dribble. He needs to get stronger physical, work on his handle and learn how to protect the ball like a running back and take the ball to the rim. He would be unguardable. He also needs to work on being more consistant but that should come with age. Really looking forward to seeing what he brings to the game next year.
Great kid, enormous talent but is not aggressive at all on the court. He plays too timid especially when finshing around the rim.
He barely did anything against Wichita State.
He is passive on the court and at times just disappears. Hopefully that will not be the case next season.
