Just saw this on ESPN.
I found this to be shocking as they had a very good season this year.
Would not be surprised to see them go hard after Shaka Smart
Minnesota has fired coach Tubby Smith, deciding to buy out the remaining four years on his contract a day after the Gophers' ouster Sunday in the NCAA tournament's round of 32 with a loss to Florida.
i agree but he may end up at UCLA
Tubby was a likable coach but the bball guys wanted more wins.I dont trust the new AD and his assistant yet. Brilliant to sign him for 4 more years then can him. Wul see, might be a brillant move.

id like to see Brad Stevens get a shot at the big ten
There are so many good coaches from Mid Majors that could take the spot but as for Brad Stevens, I don't see him going to the B1G for Minn as its more of a lateral move as they are joining as the new Big East. Maybe Tommy Amaker
Minnesota's athletic department is filled with idiots. Tubby has done a pretty good job there and he has had to work through a ton of injuries, a few defections and still has produced decent teams. What makes them think a guy like Smart or Amaker would do any better? Amaker didn't exactly excel at Scum. Smart clearly is a good coach, but a) Would he take the job? and b) I'm not sure he would do any better. Minnesota has very little high school talent, unlike Virginia. I guess you can try to recruit the Chicago area, but there are about ten other better programs closer to Chicago you are competing with.
Minnesota's only claims to hoops fame since WWII are scandals and forfeited games and seasons. Tubby at least seemed to run a fairly clean program. No, he never got them to the top of the B1G, but he did pretty well. The past two seasons have been solid years and this year's tourney win was their first non-vacated win since 1990. This looks to me like a Glen Mason redux. Maybe they will prove me wrong, but I see them hiring some decent but not great mid-major coach that will never finish above .500 in the B1G before being fired.
I would be interested to hear what coaches you feel Minny could get that would be better than Tubby. Like you, I'm not buying Stevens, nor do I see Shaka Smart taking that job as he already turned down Illinois, which I think is a far better job. I'd say the hottest candidate right now would be Gregg Marshall at Wichita State, he has been a winner everywhere he coached. Again, though, I don't see Minny being at the top of any top coach's wish list. UCLA is open already and I wouldn't be surprised to see a few other open up in the next few weeks.
You would think they might have learned something with the football coaching carousel. The potential positive momentum that could have been created when they opened their on-campus football stadium (very nice facility by the way) was blown with bad coaching decisions. They should have followed the Rutgers model in timing their resurgence with the stadium.
But back to basketball...Tubby's teams had problems with consistency, no doubt, but they definitely have been pulling off some big wins and generating some excitement. With the BIG being as good as it is top to bottom, every team was somewhat inconsistent. Even the four BIG teams still standing all had some bad losses this season. I have to agree with your conclusion that their athletic department must be run by idiots.
i see that TT is talking with Smith - i think he will rebound nicely & finish his career as a winner...he wont get all the press & notoriety as the best in the biz but he will do well & I too think it was a stupid move to fire him...they will never get anyone better or produce better results
Minny just hired Richard Pitino. Interesting. I guess for a guy with only one season of head coach experience (at any level), he could be really good. Or monumentally bad. It will be nice to beat up on a Pitino. It will be a new style, which I think is great as you need some variety to prepare you for the tourney.
I think Tubby will do well at TT. It will be interesting to see which team ends up better.
