Just heard on 10TV!

  • That reports are coming out Witherspoon is being reported as leving the basketball team along with Jordan Seibert, What is this going to mean for depth next year?

  • I've fully expected that Weatherspoon and Sibert would transfer. It was extremely unlikely that Matta would have played them outside of mop up time and I really cannot blame either.

Projected Starters: Craft, Smith Jr., Williams, Thomas, Thompson

Others getting time: Scott, Ravenel, & Ross

My biggest worry is that Ross won't be happy next year about not starting or lack of playing time. This could cause a disruption and he will end up transferring out mid-season. Matta is just not very good or comfortable at using the bench or establishing a rotation and I see this being a major problem. I like Matta as a coach in every way except this one thing, which is his achilles heel.

Personally, I think we need Ross to start and play a great deal next season as a shooter/scorer.

All 8 players noted above need to play between 17.5 - 32.5 minutes per game. It should be rare that any of the 8 are outside of this range - blow-outs, foul trouble or injury should be the only justifiable reasons. If Matta started with this premise that he wanted and needed to establish a rotation - rather than this idea that he'll get his "best 5" and play the hell out of em - it would make him a much more effective coach in my opinion.

    5 X 40 minutes per game = 200 total minutes to distribute.

    4 X 32.5 minutes per game = 130 minutes
    4 X 17.5 minutes per game = 70 minutes

It means there will be two less players that can't shoot the basketball.
Maybe Matta can get 1 or 2 JUCO transfers that practice shooting and can actually do something.
I can't recall an OSU team that has so many pathetic, awful shooters.
It makes you wonder what these kids are doing in the off season- it sure isn't practicing basketball.
As far as Ross- with his poor attitude and complaining like a primadonna no one would be sorry to see his ass go as well.

Scott is a big key- he needs to step and show he can play instead of shooting brick after
brick. Matta had to be shocked at how poor he was at shooting the ball- you can't ever have a guard shoot that bad.

I think it is ridiculous to call Ross a primadonna when you are acknowledging the lack of shooting in the same paragraph.

Ross was obviosuly frustrated because he knew he was a better shooter than the guys in front of him, but he wasn't gven a chance. The kid was probably lighting in up in practice. If he transfers, we are screwed next season.

  • You earn playing time by your practice habits and performance.
There were many reports that Ross doesn't hustle that much in practice.
That and the fact that he is poor defensively is why Matta kept him on the bench.
Scott despite shooting awful proved to Matta that he plays adequate defense and hustles.
Ross' academic woes and his whining certainly shows immaturity and character flaws.
Scott is a bigger key to next year than Ross.

  • You know, I have always wondered about that "you earn it in practice theory". What did Troy Smith's teammates see in practice that made him the first selection in that spring game. Apparently, Jim Tressel missed it.

Matta keeps almost everyone on the bench. I think you are being presumptuous that poor practice habits were the reason Ross didn't play. There were also reports saying the kid shot lights out.

I like Smith Jr. and his improvement came about because he was getting minutes and game experience.

Exactly, how can we comment on kids that we have never even had the opportunity to see what they can prove. If this was the case we'd all thing Smith Jr. was a bust last year... just look at what Walter Offutt did the minute he left and got some meaningful PT.

I love Matta and would never wish for any coaching changes...but he does have one major flaw and distributing minutes and giving players a chance to prove themselves is one BIG issue.

(Unless of course your in the starting 5...then you get more PT at OSU than anywhere else...)

Go watch an AAU tournament most of your elite teams are dribble drive up tempo no outside shooting teams.
Very few kids shoot the ball anymore!
