Maybe Time for Matta

  • to move on....

His phylosophy for recruiting is flawed. Will have good teams win 20+ games, but can't win the big one or even make consistent chowing in the NCAA tourny.

Get the one- and doners and see if you can win a NC. So far hasn't worked. Never develops any team chemistry. That is why Coach K and Izzo are ELITE coaches. They can get their team to turn it up at the end of the year, and recruit guys who want to play college hoops and are not looking for a quick route into the NBA.

  • Although I was disappointed, I down voted both these comments for the record.

  • Dayton, your post is spot on. MSU started out the year not very good. They are now the best in the B1G. Izzo kept working with team chemistry and they are playing great and the perfect time of the season.

  • great, I don't want matta to go anywhere. I just want to see the team get better as the season rolls on. This team has not gotten better. It should have with all the talent.

    Thanks.

It just fustrates me to watch how Izzo is able to get the chemistry flowing with his teams, year in and year out. It seems like most his kids come to play college hoops and stay for more than 1-2 years. It is pretty telling when Bufford was the only senior for senior day.

It is an interesting thought experiment to think of Izzo coaching the talent Matta brings in.

My big problem is lack of development from the younger players! Sully came in ready to play. Thomas to me is still playing like a highschool kid, and the other guys can't seem to get it. Too me it the coaching that causes that. 4/5 really good ball players are just lost??? They don't get lost in other great programs. I'm not for losing Matta, but he needs to add to his staff. Someone has to be able to find a way to play into the talent these kids have.

  • I am not saying Matta should go because his results have been good. However I am not calling Matta an elite coach either. I will say that this is his first team that I have seen not improve as the year went on. Perhaps it is the players that he has this year who do not wish to work and execute for success but rather think it should just come to them. If that is the case and the season ends the way it appears it might he should seriously consider cleaning the rotten apples out of the program. I realize that since their recruiting has been somewhat in neutral for next year this would be hard but I would rather suffer an average year next year to get the ship righted. Matta's teams have always been characterized by intense play but this year's team just seems to be going through the motions. The either don't realize there is a price to pay for success or want to pay it. Of course this team also is marked with the least leadership of any of his teams as well.

  • Seriously, were calling for Matta's job? You guys are crazy. He has been awesome in his time at OSU. We have our issues right now, yes. However, dont you think we should see what type of tournament performance we put in first? As for recruiting, we only have one schollie for next year. Thats why we dont have a list of All-Americans. To call for his job is simply ridiculous. hahaha. Kick rocks.......

And what happened last year to one of Izzo's most hyped teams of all time? I don't think Matta is a better coach than Izzo but good lord we can't be serious about sending him on his way. He's the best thng that has happened to tOSU's basketball program in decades.

  • I can't disagree with exploring a different coaching option. I like Matta and grateful for what he's done for the program but I think his coaching style has run its course here at tOSU.

I haven't watched every game this year but from what I've seen, Sullinger looks soft and has regressed from his Freshman year. This team should be embarrassed by this loss to Wisconsin, Matta should be embarrassed as well. No way is Sullinger ready for the NBA, he will need all 4 years at this rate.

These are all my opinion and please feel free to correct me if I'm way off base.

  • I don't even really follow basketball, but this is idiotic. Ohio State has consistently played well above what they were playing before Matta got here. The only team I can really remember before Matta that was really good was the one with Michael Redd and Scoonie Penn. They've consistently had teams like that since he's been here with players like Oden, Conley, Sullinger, Diebler, etc. Ohio State isn't a basketball school, or an elite basketball program in my opinion. If you get a coach that can recruit very well and consistently have really good seasons you better keep them. Ohio State isn't a Duke/North Carolina like they are in college football. The fact that Matta has raised expectations to this level says a lot about what a good coach he is.

  • Matta has been nothing but good for Ohio State.

Is he as great of a coach as Izzo, Boeheim or Coach K?

Probably not, but those guys are HOFers. What Matta did at X and is doing now is no mirage or fluke. He is a great coach and recruiter.

He keeps bringing in the players and the classes, and eventually he will win one. Izzo only has 1 championship, as does Boeheim.

Its not easy to win these things.

He's put Ohio State on the map as a top basketball school that can get recruits, and it has rivaled MSU as the Big Ten power.

This years team just doesnt have what it takes. It happens. Expectations are high and thats good.

    Thad Matta

    1 Final Four!

Final Fours and National Titles are what people look for and want. Conference titles are nice but they arent National Titles!

Who cares about a Final Four?

People want there rivals beat and CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Nobody cares about Final Fours unless your a mid major or something.

If no one cared about final fours then why is it such a big deal to make it there? Why are there promos for "The Final Four"? Why are there contractual incentives for making the final four?
