No killer instinct at all.

  • Up 7 with 4 minutes to go.

Craft throws the ball out of bounds.
    Smith travels.
Sullinger gets tied up for a jump ball and then almost gets a T.
Thomas executes a perfect handoff to their 5'8" guard.

We won, but a better team would have taken us out.

  • The way this team was playing in early january i thought we were the best team in the country and would have loved to see Kentucky on the schedule, this is a little reality check these last couple of weeks.

    agreed......but, I'll take the win.

Team needs a kick in the ass. We will see what hapens at MSU. I am afraid we lose by double digits.

Exactly....also up 13 with 7 minutes to go and 10 with 6 minutes to go....no clutch players on this team. I want to touch on our last possession of the game. NU made their come back by hitting big shots but also by switching from the 1-3-1 zone to man to man defense. I watched the last possession 7 times. They went back to the 1-3-1 zone trap. It may be hard to tell because we scored so quickly but that's what they were in. This left 6'9" 270 pound Jared Sullinger on the guard down low. Absolutely a stupid call by Carmody. Coaches in all sports at all levels act like you have to be a genius to understand the sport. I think most coaches are over-paid gym teachers. To draw up a defense that would leave Sullinger on a smaller player so close to the basket was idiotic. I was pulling for NU to make the tourney. Not to beat us mind you but make the tourney. Now I'm not because Carmody's an idiot.

  • This team has a lack of communication, I have never seen a team get beat so much on defense because they dont know how to switch on screens. This team should play zone and nothing else point blank period....... Also l think imho they would get better results if they move Thomas to the wing and replace Smith with Williams and move sullinger to the 4 spot. This team might only win the 1st rd in the tourney and then get sent home packing.

  • I will agree that we finished the game about as poor as you can with the exception with the very last play where we showed a bit of killer instinct. I also have a few other complaints, not necasarily about our gameplay but Jared and his attitude. I understand it's frustrating when you have a guy leaning on you 100% of the time but when he threw the ball in the air like that after the jump ball call he should have gotten a technical.

I don't really think we had a bad game, not perfect, but not bad. We shot the ball average (Buford bad Craft good) and played good D about 80% of the time. NW is a very underrated team and I mean come on they made EVERYTHING they needed to to get back into this game. If it weren't for the shear fact that we are better than them (REBOUNDS) we may have lost. You can't act like NW didn't give us everything they had. They would have upset a lot of teams tonight.

  • an almost total collapse in the last five minutes. good to see buford still throwing them up there and clanking them off the rim. how many would he have to miss before matta would take him out? will thomas get any votes for defensive player of the year? i think not. craft was about the only bright spot i saw. sullinger is really good against teams with no big men at all. unfortunately most good teams have one or more big guys.
i know this was an away game and it was their senior night but winning by one point after obliterating them the first time by twenty-seven was pretty disappointing. how this helps prepare the team for michigan state on sunday and the tournaments after that i really don't know. this is not a great northwestern team but our defense was so lax and so slow and so unable to follow the ball when it went back around the horn or when one of their guys drove to the basket, they had open shots the whole second half.
i really hope these guys will wake up and put forth a real effort on sunday, but i think michigan state will bounce back from their loss much more vociforously than we did.

  • This team is done.

I hate to sound like a quitter or that i gave up on them, but it just doesnt have it and its obvious.

The talent is there, but the hustle and the desire and the overall passion is not.

The coaching and the players let the team down.

Matta shoudl have infused his bench much more than he did. No excuse for this, these guys needed playing time to be ready for the tourney.

Instead, he played a slowed down, dumbed down style this year that I just don't understand.

Just one of those wasted, coulda been years.

But maybe they never had it at all? I dont know.

We'll see. But what I see is a lazy, entitled group with no leader.

    Overall a very SOFT team.

  • the only shot the Bucks have Sunday is if they can control the boards....MSU can't shoot 3's like NW...40 footers?.....Just can't get Intimidated and Pushed Around like in Cbus...and it would help to shoot a little better than 26% from the floor...if the Bucks shoot 40% on 3's and make some FT's they will roll, but, thats a BIG IF.

MSU depends on everyone played as a unit and not as individuals. Sullinger cannot fade out of the game after getting hit by Nix, Payne and Green. He must stay "engaged" to play the game. The other four guys need to contribute on the court. There must be no zero points in thirty minutes by Smith. Piss poor shot selection and shooting by Buford needs to be eliminated. Thomas needs to get back in the flow and put the junk shot back in the rim. Craft needs to hit the wide open three pointers and so does everyone else.

This team plays like they did a month ago, OSU has a great shot at beating Sparty. However, the Buckeyes had better not play Sparty like last time or it will be a twenty point loss.

  • I try to give this team the benefit of the doubt but to me they are just average and something just isn't working. When it counts most the team falls apart like they are pressing. Another thing during this game I don't understand why you have Craft and Smith lobbing the ball to break the press....OMG craft can break the press!!!!! That is bad coaching. Sullinger is really showing bad attitude lately granted I think the B10 officials have been horrible but still you have to maintain composure. I am praying that this team can come alive at the right time but I just don't see the answer for outside shooting on a consistant basis. What do you fans think?

Maybe you sound like a quitter because you are one.

This team is playing MSU and if they win they are conference champs. Read it out loud to yourself because you seem not to understand.

They have lost 6 games including to #3 Kansas without Sully and 5 games in the best conference in America this year.

While they are not were a lot of us hoped they would be - the grinding physical B10 style of play (and inconsistent officiating) has taken its toll on them - they are still a top 10 team, and right now a likely #2 seed in the NCAA.

Do you think his "dumbed down" style might have something to do with the fact that his team is 1 senior, 1 xfer junior, 6 sophomores and 5 freshman? 8 players have logged more than 300 minutes and 9 players average over 10 MPG. Contrast that with MSU who has 8 players with more than 300 minutes and 8 with over 10 MPG.

So before we close the book on the Buckeyes this year, why don't we finish the year?

  • 5 Turnovers in the last 4 min of the game, when they're trying to run down the clock...Totally Unacceptable......Forget the past from here on out ALL the games mean something starting at MSU for a share of THE B1G...then all One or your dones in the Tourny...Gut Check Time

  • What I find so sad and troubling is that the starting five are decent but all have serious flaws but the complete disregard and non use of the bench for the whole season is mind boggling. If you DVRd the game,go back and watch the three minutes where Thompson and Scott were on the floor together,I have never seen a more out of sync, caotic mess in my life,I didn`t know what I was watching. These guys were supposed to be stud players coming out of HS?

Everyone knew going in that this team is fairly slow and loves to shoot the three and run the clock, for the life of me,how do our so called "athletic guys" let them have wide open threes all night long? And when they weren`t getting wide open threes,we were not switching (communicating) and they were driving to the hole,of course with no help from our center.Very sad and unproductive year for alot of players and if some leave either for the draft or are pissed off and transfer, next year could be a real downer.

Once again I say you are 100% wrong. If the team had no heart or no "Killer instinct" they would have put their heads down and wilted during that final 5-6 minutes and been done when NU made that last 3-pointer to tie the game. So what did the team with "no floor leaders" do? They ran a play where that heavily criticized point guard(who played a magnificent game) took the inbounds pass, headed down the floor, made an excellent and difficult pass to Sully(another heavily criticized player) that had run the length of the court and taken a position in the lane. Sully, (the non-leader with no heart )makes a great catch in traffic, turns toward the basket and scores while holding off the defender. Chaos ensues. NU inbounds the ball to Shurna who drives the ball just past midcourt and shoots. And who was there to disrupt that final shot? That's right boys and girls, Big Sully!! You know the one that just whines and lays on the floor. Last two plays of the game that the Bucks led from the start and Sully and Craft and Buford are still going 110% trying to hold on to win. No heart? No Leadership? Me thinks you complain too much! The nice thing about being a fan is you get to live in the world that you create. So you can forget things like this is Big Ten basketball and these teams can really play. The players make mistakes. But if you want to see a team that displayed mental toughness then rewatch last night's game. Both teams qualify. You guys want to see a rout and think that's mental toughness. I disagree and it is becoming tedious to read posters on here complain about players whining. Look in a mirror!

At the risk of beating a dead horse, Matta has done very poorly this season with bench development. I would basically give him a "D" in this regard. I've posted dozens of times throughout the entire season that he just isn't comfortable using the bench. This weakness has become more and more apparent as the grind of the BIG season progressed.

The bottom line is that we are now at the end of the season, but we are basically getting zero offensive production off the bench, a little defensive help, but only nominal contributions on rebounding and assists. The lack of bench development appears to have had a bad affect on team chemistry. It would not be surprising to see some transfers after the season. Regardless, it's too late now to develop a bench, it ain't gonna happen.

The tournament is basically going to be a crap shoot. Keep in mind that despite some of the stupid stuff that gets posted, our starters do have a great deal of talent. Sullinger showed that last night in putting the team on his back. If the starters can stay out of foul trouble and conserve enough energy, and if Buford can get hot and Craft can continue to shoot the ball well, I still think we have as good a chance as anyone of making it to the final four.

My thought is Thomas is becoming one the the biggest detriments to this team of late. Aside from the fact that he is the absoulte worst defender on this team, his self absorbed attitude is becoming apparent. Did anyone happen to catch the screen shot after a fowl when Lenzelle had to yell at Thomas and basically tell him to get his ass in the huddle.I can't count the times I watched last night that after Thomas got torched on D the first thing he did was immediately begin cherry picking down court and stick his had up for the ball in hopes of an easy score. Check out his body language when he is not getting touches and others are having scoring success. It is obvious he is playing for himself only right now in an attemt to line his wallet soon. Great scorer, but as we have seen, doesn't always equate to wins.

  • If Thad doesn't call time out at the end and we don't score and go to ot he would get crucified on here. He calls a timeout and we get a great shot which we make to win the game and we're criticizing his use of time outs? I don't get it.
