Should this be the starting lineup?

  • Williams, Sullinger, Thomas, Buford and Craft. Because with thomas and buford getting beat of the dribble every game with need a shot blocker in the middle and it will even take some double team off of sullinger.

  • Yes, it should be. Williams could definitely help us in the tournament if he could get more playing time. Without his size we don't have much chance of competing with the bigger teams. Williams should at least take Ravenel's minutes at center because Ravenel doesn't really do much when he is on the court.

  • I would love to see this. I realize williams cant score, but i dont care. He could block or alter shots, unlike sully. Also, when he gets the ball around the rim he can dunk it easily. This will never happen though, as he never even gets in.

  • Obviously there is more to Williams not playing than the fans see.
You have to trust Matta on this.
Just guessing, Williams doesn't appear to have much hustle or basketball IQ and probably doesn't do very much in practice to warrant playing time.
Lenzelle Smith isn't a very good player but he obviously busts his ass in practice and that gets him PT.

  • The one problem is now your asking sully to have to play sOme d out on the floor which frankly he has been getting beat like a drum and then you risk him being in foul trouble

    triplej3

  • That's why you have a shot blocker in the middle to alter shots.

I m hearing that Thompson shoots well in practice from outside the coaches are waiting on him to become a scorer when he does Smith sits!
You can't tell me every kid Matta gets can't be developed as a freshman, i think he does a poor job of developing players!

I agree with cew31 and think this could be a good lineup to tinker with...

    Another intriguing possibility could be:

Williams, Sullinger, Buford, Craft and Thompson and bring Thomas off the bench.. Last year, Thomas was nicknamed "Microwave" and was just instant offense off the bench... Might be something to bring Thomas in at the under 16 timeout and let him get in the flow and get his shot established.

Either way, I hope this team is able to right the ship and get ready for the Big 10 Tourney and NCAA

  • It'd be a nice line up if we played 2-3 zone the entire game. However, with us playing man to man, there would be so many liabilities on the floor when it comes to guarding one on one on the perimeter that it wouldn't matter if we had a shot blocker. The defense would end up looking worse then what it did against Purdue. All they would have to do is screen the ball handler with Williams' match up and he's no longer on the block to try and alter shots.

I have been questioning, especially recently, why Matta does not play some sort of zone...ANY zone...even a match up.... SOMETHING? We got completely anihilated in the post......This team is frustrating...I am still confused at the substituting that Matta does from game to game. I understand some of it is based on match-ups but jesus.....why didn't Shannon Scott play Saturday? WTF? he played some CRUCIAL minutes against Purdue and peformed well but his reward is ZERO minutes against MSU???

No Amir Williams? This team proved that when the going gets tough they crumble and cry - foul and argue amongst themselves in the huddle instead of pulling together and getting the shit done. I am tired of Sully whining every time he gets the ball stripped...I know some calls are missed but that happens to everyone and instead of overcoming that he decided to be a whiney girl. He is forcing everything because of all the attention he is getting....he needs to be more concerned with finding the open man vs. dribbling around and trying to do to much.

4 out of 5 on the road and NONE will be easy.....it will be interesting to see how this team responds to such a bad loss.......

Our problem is we have no bench to pick up any of the slack that may be lost from a few hyaving a bit of an off night.

I am big time concerned that this team is heading down a slippery slope they do not want to be on.....

Sullinger, Smith, Buford, Thompson and Craft need to start. Williams and Weatherspoon or Ravenel would come off the bench along with Thomas, Scott and Sibert. I wish Ross could play since he would replace Sibert. Depending on a taller matchup, it would be Williams, Sullinger, Buford, Thompson and Craft. You need Williams to play on the weak side. Ravenel plays way too soft around the rim. THOMAS ATTACK THE >>CKING RIM and get your points that way. BANG IN THE JUNK FROM BUFORD, CRAFT AND SMITH AROUND THE RIM. Get some confidence then work on hit the jump shots around the foul line. Quit trying to hit the twenty foot airballs, Mr. Thomas. You can board the ball when you want and you chose not to do it.
Smith needs to get back to attacking the rim as well.

  • None of the road games will be easy. Wisconsin and Illinois will be tough at home. There are no easy games down the stretch. Northwestern is pretty damn tough to beat at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

we will have a rough week this week....tuesday at minnesota where we always have problems and saturday at michigan. we could lose 3 more games this season easily if we don't get it together. thad needs to play his hot shot recruits and rest some of his starters for a few minutes each game. he is so bull headed. what the hell did sebert do wrong?? scott isn't the only answer for coming in for craft!!

all the other great programs play their young players...kentucky, north carolina, kansas...but not thad!! we got out coached saturday and i like thad but the look on his face several times told alot. he was lost!!!

I agree with everything except the first paragraph about Scott. Scott is a solid player and is going to contribute big time down the road, but he has a long way to go to be a really good guard in this league. He did a solid job against Purdue, but remember he only went in because Craft was in foul trouble. Craft had a solid game against MSU with 15 pts, 3-4 assists, a couple boards.

Hate to say it, but I think this team would be worse at zone than Man-to-man. As much as we, the fans, complain about Buford/Thomas getting beat off the dribble, can you imagine those two guys playing in space trying to find someone to guard?

I don't mind the starting line-up because frankly, who's better than those 5 guys? It's pure speculation on our part to assume anyone of those guys on the bench can contribute in such a way to get more PT than the starters. I like the idea of having an "energy" guy coming off the bench for a 6th man, but that's usually a 2-3 spot guy and not a 3-4 guy like Thomas. And I don't think this team has a guy like that.

The problem at MSU is Buford and Thomas both had bad nights shooting and Sully was manhandled down low. 3 of your top 4 players having an off night against a good MSU team? That doesn't spell for a good result. I agree with everything else you said about crying instead of playing harder. THere is multiple reports of the players bickering with eachother also. This team needs to come together and play as an unselfish team like it did earlier in the year.

Let me tell you guys what would happen if Williams was starting, instead of seeing Sully and or Thomas being beaten on the high screen action you would see Amir Williams being beaten on the high screen action due to the fact he is even worse than those guys at playing it.

Perhaps you guys haven't seen any of the games, Amir doesn't even get down into a stance runs at guys straight up.

  • lol, we have one of the best defensive teams around - the idea of playing zone is laughable.

We aren't losing basketball games because of our defense people.

You are losing games from Thomas playing poor defense. Green scored six points in a row against Thomas. Buckeye defense is good for the most part except Thomas is the weak link. Offense is weak with Buford and Thomas taking too many jump shots in games.

    buckibball4ever

  • I 100% agree. I have been preaching that starting lineup all year. We are too soft inside. Sullinger is a pf, and Thomas is a sf with inside game. You can't win in the tourney without some type of real center.

P.S. If Thomas can't guard my grandma then we aren't going anywhere anyway.

With Thomas in it wouldn't be a horrible idea to use our 2-3 matchup zone. We used it quite a bit up until last year and it was very effective. Keeps your best players out of foul trouble too.

    Urban Matta

  • He isn't losing games for us. I say 'good defense' and instead of pointing out our strengths, everyone looks to the weakest link - lol Nice.

If one guy on defense is losing games for your team then you don't have a basketball team.
