Some final thoughts on regular season

  • The good:

    1. Another B1G championship, although it would have been nice not to share.
    2. Lenzelle Smith is probably the most improved guy on the team and came up big a few times when needed but didn't usually force his shot and played his role (occasionally to the point of not being aggressive enough).
    3. Matta is willing to use his bench, somewhat. I never really had a big issue with his use of the bench and later in the season he seemed to start using some guys more during critical times, but he didn't stray too far from his norm.
    4. This team can guard the perimeter as well as any team in the country and Craft has to be one of the best on ball defenders in the country.
    5. A Matta coached team can be a good rebounding team. Rebounding has been a weakness is almost all previous years, but I think he found some more athletic players and for the most part this team was a very good rebounding team.
    6. This team is capable of beating any team in the country when the shooters are hot and the defense is focused.
    7. They have almost assuredly locked up a 2 seed. I think there is a very slim chance they move up to a 1 or down to a 3, but not very likely. I put this in the good column, even though I think this team was capable of being a 1 had they been a little more focused at times, plus I think Sully being injured briefly hurt them.

    The not so good:

    1. This is probably the worst shooting team since Matta arrived, and two of our five starters like to shoot a lot regardless of whether they are making shots.
    2. The freshman were overrated. I know some think that Matta just didn't play them enough, but not a single one showed much scoring ability. Thompson, Scott, and Williams all looked pretty good at times on D, but on a team that already had pretty good defenders starting, the freshman didn't really fit a needed role. I think they will develop into decent players, but none of them were instant impact players as they were thought to be. They are athletic, though, and you can't teach that.
    3. This team did not appear to have very good chemistry or enjoy playing together like the last few years. Kinda reminds me of the NIT team in that regard.
    4. Some of the key players on this team didn't really show much improvement from last year (mainly Buford and Sully) and I think both struggled with being more integral parts of the offense.
    5. Losing the recruiting battle for Anthony Davis is really tough in hindsight. I have a hard time believing this team would have lost more than 1 game all year with him at PF, Thomas moving down to the 3 and Buford at the 2. PF remains a position Matta has not really recruited well, possibly due to his PF mostly playing like a SF. I think Davis could also play the 5 and have Sully either sit the bench a little or play some PF depending on the matchup.

    So---

This team is fully capable of a deep tourney run or even a championship, but like any year, they will need to play well and have some luck. I really hope they aren't seeded with KY or Cuse, as those teams would be difficult to beat. After that, there are a lot of very evenly matched teams. I like this teams chances in that they can play very good defense and rebound, so they will not get blown out by anyone and will be pretty consistent IMO. I also think some new officiating will be beneficial. I don't think the refs lost us any games, but the B1G refs were terrible this year. Whether we have good officials or not, Sully needs to keep his head in the game. This team is also the most battle tested team since Matta arrived, having played a ton of ranked teams. Let's hope they can maintain focus and get the job done. IMO, the key will be for Buford and Thomas to be patient and wait for good shots. This will help keep Sully involved and I think help the team work together better. Sully on the other hand needs to be willing to kick the ball back out to help those guys get better shots. There was definitely too many early shots down the stretch IMO. Those early shots should be saved for transition, which should be keyed by our guards ability to pressure the perimeter and create steals and turnovers. I hope they push the ball more than they did late in the season. Once we are in the halfcourt set, Sully needs to get the ball a lot.

So far, I would give this season a B as they did win a conference championship but I think underachieved at times, but the tournament could easily make it an A or even a C if they lose early.

  • I'll upgrade them from your score of a B and go to an A-. A few simple things going against them. 1) Sully's injuries. He only missed a few games but like Special K said, he lost some of his fitness and a lot of practice reps. 2) L.Ross only having half of a season, if that. I think Coach Matta had big plans for this kid but after missing the first half and all of pre-season, they sscrapped the plan. He might have been that ''X'' factor the team was looking for. 3) The incoming freshman just weren't as 'game ready' as we all thought they were going to be. I, for one, was giddy with the potential of instant impact with this class. I think most of them are 3-4 year players if they do not transfer, which will be good for the long haul of the program, just not this year. They just didn't have the impact I thought they would.

The MSU game was a micro-cosm of the season, wrapped up into one game. Poor shots, bad ball movement, turnovers, bad help defense, etc. THen great shots, great ball movement, nice passes and great defense! The biggest thing I took away from the game was tOSU gutted out a tough game, where they were down by 15 at one point, and won on the road against a top 5 team! What's a better confidence building than beating MSU in East Lansing? Not much. I've been saying the last few weeks this team just needed one, hard fought win. I think this is the win the team needed.

    Go Bucks!!

  • Nice analyses by both of you guys. I hope we learn from the mistakes during the Big Ten season and carry the grittiness at the end into the conference and NCAA tournaments. Grinding out tough games at the end gives me more hope for tournament play.

    The good:

    1. Agreed. I am just glad they won the Big Ten title after last month. I didn't think it was possible. I am happy they won a B1G Title.
    2. Agreed. Smith has good games and bad games. Smith needs to channel more good games like Michigan at home. If teams give him wide open looks like Indiana did at the Schott then that is needed from him as well.
    3. Matta is not going to change using hs bench. It would be nice for the bench players to average 10 to 20 minutes a game depending on opponent, but it won't happen. Don't know if bench players know the defense and offensive schemes good enough yet. This is where I blame the assistant coaches not developing these players during the course of the season.
    4. Agreed.
    5. Agreed. Guards need to rebound the ball better in games.
    6. Agreed. When OSU is hitting their outside shots , it puts less pressure on Sullinger in the post. Buford, Craft, Thomas and Smith are the X factors in three point production.
    7. This team has locked up the two seed if they make the finals. Question is do they put them in the Kentucky bracket. NCAA don't like the Buckeyes. Look at their brackets the last several years. It is usually the hardest bracket. OSU was the number one ranked team going into the NCAA last year. Who goes into their bracket but Kentucky, UNC and Syracuse! Same teams ranked in the top five this season. Frankly, I think Sully is injured and doesn't have lift off his jump shot. He has been injured for the whole season. Sullinger needed to get tougher with bad officiating and not let the calls dictate his entire game.
    8. Big Ten officiating has been worse than years past. Don't get me wrong Big Ten officials have stunk for decades but when you know the referees. It is bad.

    Not so good.
1 and 2. I don't know how much the assistant coaches are developing these freshman. L. Ross and Williams are probably the most talented of these kids but L. Ross was behind in his development. Thompson has the potential to become an excellent player but the coaches must work with this kid. I think Scott is going to be a good player but he lacks confidence on the offensive side of the ball. I hope he gets his confidence this season. The kid has good form on his shots. There is some minor detail either too much spin on the ball.
    3. Agreed. The last few years having bad chemistry I would disagree. This team reminds me of the year after OSU went to the final game and they had Kosta Koufos and Jamar Butler on the team along with a young Lighty, Turner and Diebler.
    5. Losing ANTHONY Davis came down to the almighty dollar. Kentucky paid alot of money to get his services for one year. Chicago Tribune and the Sun Times would have had the effrontery to print the REAL story. Kentucky would be in trouble with the NCAA.

The only teams that bothers me with OSU are Kentucky and UNC. It is mainly because of their size, length and atheticsm in the post. OSU must hit outside shots to spread them out. I think the Buckeyes can beat the Cuse.
