thad matta is like john cooper a good recruiter but a bad coach

While i like Thad Matta and want him to stay as our coach i think he is a better recruiter than he is a coach.

don't say that, people will crush you on this board. even if it is the truth. I have never once called for Matta to be fired yet i get bashed for saying he isn't elite.

you really hit home... I only have 16 posts. Because I don't sit on here all day and make comments. Well I guess my membership of 11months compared to your 4 months make me better than your 192 posts(yes this is sarcasm).

I only stated my opinion this time because of how ridiculous this thread was. I usually keep my opinion to myself.

I am sure you have more Facebook friends than me too. +1 for you

sorry to bust your bubble but i have been just as long. Changed my email so had to change my account. You were better off keeping your opinions to yourself.

        • I think what JN is saying is Thad has been winning Big 10 titles but has not done very well in the NCAA Tournament. Think about some of those loses. Sienna, really, Tennessee, just hoping Evan Turner would win it, Georgetown, really, we were Big 10 champs that year, Kentucky last year, we were cleary the best team in it, thanks Gene Smith for that draw. Cooper won some big games but not many Bowls!!!

I thought he went farther than the final 4? And happened to play and EXPERIENCED deep Florida team, who would
have beaten anybody that year. Sure we have experienced some disappointments and have fallen short what
possibly should have been, but for me personally I am excited about our program and the attention it is getting
is terrific. I love our Coach, and the direction it is going is the right one, people need to look a little farther than
the now, and see clearly this guy has a great coaching staff with a lot of young talent and continues to gain
momentum! Oh and by the way my comment was for the original post! Go Bucks! Go Coach Matta!

As a fan of the Bucks who was born in Kentucky - I also am a big fan of UK. Let me tell you, Pitino has worse problems. All Matta has done is win 20 games or more in every season as a head coach. Pitino can't say that, and he will frustrate the heck out of you. It would almost seem as if he would lose games during the regular season on purpose to teach his kids a lesson. One bad game and you want to throw out one of the best basketball coaches this university has ever seen? Where did that come from?

Someone gets it. With the resources Matta has at his disposal, it seems to me that he has underachieved. Something tells me that if Gee/Smith were interviewing a replacement b-ball coach, they would not stop at "what are your plans to win the Big Ten regularly." I imagine Gee/Smith are interested in national championship-caliber coaches and they spend the money to get them. Matta has only made one Final Four in 7 or 8 seasons at Ohio State, and that came with arguably the best recruiting class ever.

Funny that the posters here are such sheep. Apparently, questioning Matta's coaching ability puts a target on the poster. Get real sheeple. Not long ago Tressel was held up as infallible, until he messed up and was replaced by a man who just two short years ago drew the scorn of Buckeye nation. Now Urban Meyer is its new hero who can do no wrong. Woe to the man bold enough to second-guess Meyer's decisions and/or tactics. SMH...

                    • I don't know why questioning some of Matta's in game coaching decisions brands one a pariah. I won’t go so far as to say I want him replaced, but I do find myself screaming at the T.V. during games wondering what the hell he’s thinking.

The MSU game was just another example. Am I the only one that thought he should have brought Sullinger over to the bench and calm him down when he was flopping all over the court and pouting when he wasn’t getting the foul calls? How about why Amir didn’t get to see any playing time when Thomas was continuing to get beat like a rug on defense and wasn’t contributing points or rebounds? At least Amir can block a shot on occasion.

These substitutions didn’t need to be for long to get the message across or see if it could have stopped the bleeding. From my perspective, he lets the opponent’s runs go on too long before calling a timeout. Something I noticed Izzo has no problem spending a timeout on.

Matta = Great recruiter, pretty decent game planner, average situation manager.

This.....I know the MSU game is just one loss but we have not played great basketball for much of the past 2 months. Unless it turns around soon we are looking at most likely a 4th straight year of a sweet 16 exit or sooner. That is a trend. The only time we have made it past the sweet 16 with Matta was when a guy named Oden was patroling the paint and another guy named Conley was going by guys at will. My issue is the style of basketball we are playing. After watching Matta at Xavier and from things he has said I was under the impression we would be a different kind of B1G team. More uptempo. After 8 years we are the prototype B1G team. Half court, grind out it out team. Where is the pressing defense or trapping defense? When do we ever try to push the tempo of a B1G game. Matta is content to play a slow down style of basketball in which the advantage of that style goes to the least talented team. Fewer possessions equal a greater opportunity to be in the game. Matta has done a great job and I don't want a new coach. I just would like to see a new approach to our offense rather than this stagnant standing around, throwing the ball into the post offense. I want some creativity on the offensive end of the floor.

                          05-06, 26 wins, 2nd round loss
06-07, 35 wins, title loss to Florida
                          07-08, 24 wins, NIT Champion
                          08-09, 22 wins, 1st round loss

                          10-11, 34 wins, sweet 16

It's not a bad resume and they call it 'March Madness' for a reason. Every year there are teams ranked low that make a run and teams ranked high that lose early. That's why they play the games. A Runner-up, two sweet 16's and a NIT Championship (from a team that wasn't that good) is not bad on a resume on a 6 year scope. An Elite 8 while at Xavier isn't bad either.

In the same time span Izzo, Coach K, Roy Williams, Billy Donavan, Bill Self, Calipari, Beoheim and Jim Calhoun might be the only coaches who have had more success. Is Matta on the level of these guys yet? Probably not but only because he doesn't have that one final bullet point of being a National Champ.

Agree to disagree, but we are acting like tOSU is the basketball capital of the world, which it is not.

                          • While I like Matta, I think it's fair for him to take some criticism. How many games does it take of seeing Thomas play defense to maybe think man-to-man is not the answer. Sullinger is an average defender at best and Buford isn't far behind. His adjustments during a game are far and few between...see Brandon Paul lighting it up for the entire game a few weeks back. Try zone or something different for the love of God.

Does he need to bench Thomas & Buford, yes, did he "yes"...both went to the bench late in the game. Did he mess up by not recruiting some pure shooters...yes. Matta will figure out something, I'm just not sure how you fix outside shooting with the personnel on the team.

Mr. Foster is just getting started and perhaps we will be reading great thread from him in the future. We can all recall our first post, and the insight we all had to endure when we interpolate thought into key board to foot in mouth. Perhaps Mr. Foster doesn’t understand how it feels to loss. Especially, if it’s a team you’re rotting for to win. Mr. Foster, let this serve a warning that the guys aren't forgiving if you suggest in anyway
Matta doesn't know what he doing. Bad shooting does happen.

                                      • They have beat 5 out of 8 ranked opponents this year.

They have beat Duke, Florida, and Wisconsin along with rival Michigan. We hung in there with a very angry MSU team. A couple shots fall in this game and we still win despite playing horrible.

People keep talking about how OSU teams have underperformed in tournaments. Reality is they have overperformed in regular seasons. Matta started this job with OSU under NCAA sanctions. His first great recruiting class came and went in one year. Two of those recruits probably weren't expected to leave that soon. We had a two scholarship reduction due to APR caused by one and dones that didn't attend class.

He has accomplished all he has at OSU while BUILDING a program and going through the above issues. I believe he will win a championship before leaving OSU.

Some people are ignorant that think we need a different coach. 1. you can't win ever game no matter who you are(example: john wooden) 2. A "bad night" for a couple players in Basketball can have a huge difference with fewer players to impact a game (comparison to football or baseball) 3. Go play basketball even a rec game with same ten guys and see if it goes exactly how you expect it

sometimes I wonder how many people played sports and sucked at it, but convinced themselves they were good and knew what they were doing.

That is exactly the point, Kentucky just lost to Vanderbilt and you do not see their fans screaming for Calipari's head. Look, getting to the national championship in basketball is tough and there are alot of good teams like Murray State that pose threats that they do not pose in football. Also, I have played 5 on 5 basketball in a rec game, taken some good shots, only to see the ball go in and out of the rim. How many of Sullingers shots did we see fall off the front of the rim, back of the rim, side of the rim and everywhere in between. But, I do think that we need the smaller lineup of Williams, Ross, Sibert, Craft, and Thompson.

Matta needs to use his bench and see what these kids can do during game play. Thomas's defense is killing OSU on the court. Matta might have to implement a zone defense to cover up Thomas's defensive deficiencies.

I am no johnny come lately to this topic, I have said from the day he was hired that I did not like his offensive philosophy, part of 26% shooting comes from taking bad shots and the coach needs to teach the difference between a good shot and a bad shot---and OSU under Matta has the propensity to take a high number of bad shots, and if you want to explain it away that it is the players taking the shots, Matta still has the final say with playing time and all players want the playing time.

If you think things are tough now----take a look at next year's squad minus Buford and Sullinger, huge struggle to get the ball in the hole, yes we have guys on the bench but it is just that on the bench with minimal playing time/experience and that folks is on the shoulders of the coach
