Again, much ado about nothing. Here is the exchange:
"Chu delivered those stunning remarks in testimony before Congress yesterday. When Rep. Alan Nunnelee (R-Miss.) asked Chu whether it’s his “overall goal to get our price” of gasoline lower, Chu said, “No, the overall goal is to decrease our dependency on oil, to build and strengthen our economy.”
Notice the the words - of gasoline lower - is not in quotes? That is because the Politico writer just filled in what he thought the full question was. Instead of that guess, given that Nunnelee was in the middle of a rant about making gas prices as high as in Europe, the more likely finish to the question would have been " “overall goal to get our price” of gasoline to European levels.
He is a full analysis of the questioning of Chu by Nunnelee.

"Politico's Morning Energy today: "This report is false," a DOE spokeswoman said. "In the hearing Tuesday, the secretary repeatedly reiterated his concern about the impact that increased prices at the pump are having on families and that we continue to do all we can to provide relief. That said there are no quick fixes, which is why this administration has taken steps to continue to expand production, dramatically increase the efficiency of the vehicles we drive, and invest in alternate fuels - all with an ultimate goal of reducing our reliance on foreign oil and protecting American families from the ups and downs of the international oil market"

Here is a video of the exchange. Chu CLEARLY interrupted Rep. Nunnelee, Chu CLEARLY knew that the question was about the price of gasoline since Nunnelee took about 45 seconds to ask about gas prices and the effect it is having on hie district. By the way, as people can see from the video, Rep. Nunnelee was not "ranting" as you said. Around the 2:55 mark is the exchange. it was also the only thing Nunnelee was talking about.

Good research but please look at it again. You are right about the rant being earlier but he still spent a great deal of time on the idea of making our gas the same price as on the European Market. As Chu interrupts him you can actually see Nunnelee saying the word "up" following his “overall goal to get our price” (up to European levels?). Would he really have said “overall goal to get our price” down? I don't think so, he would have used used the word lower in the middle of the question as in “overall goal to lower our price.”
That it was his last question, he could have been returning to the earlier question. We will never know, but if Chu thought that he was being asked if the goal was to lower gas prices, then the answer makes little sense because Chu would have tied the first part of his answer “No, the overall goal is to decrease our dependency on oil, ..." to the lowering of the price which should happen if we lower our dependency.

you can say all you want, MR. CHU was told by the higher ups in WASHINGTON that he needs to back track as fast as he can, and thats what he did......BUT it is the belief of OBAMA and Chu that prices need to get to europeans price, and if it wasn't something about the re-election coming up, BOTH would be saying it.....
