Conservatives: Hypocrisy as an ideology?

I don't know, I'm not an economist, but I do know that continually trying something that doesn't work and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity and will not help.

I upvote you and agree! WE must be insane.

I don't think any stimulus works well. I have a couple of uncles that own big businesses in Ohio and they laugh at the idea of supply side economics. They say that when the economy sucks it is because the consumer has lost confidence. When the consumer has lost confidence their discretionary spending drops off a cliff. They believe that tax rates don't matter at that point because their is no demand for products so why would they hire new people. They believe tax cuts as stimulus are a complete waste. The only stimulus that is worth the money is a short-term infrastructure building program. The Obama stimulus plan was a waste if you ask me. All of that temporary tax cut money should have gone into building infrastrucure projects. That money is guaranteed to be pumped into the economy and it won't be wasted because all of those projects were going to be done eventually anyways. Tax rebates for individuals have proven to be ineffective for stimulus because people don't spend it. Economists have researched this and found that the vast majority of people usthose tax rebates to pay off credit cards.

Ng I agree with your relatives. I am a CPA and have my own accounting and tax practice. I agree the SS tax cut was a waste. It hurt the social security administration (which is already unable to pay the people that paid into it) more than it helped the taxpayers that got a break on social security. I believe the infrastructure improvements are good for the public as a whole but they really only stimulate a select few. These are the employees that are doing the construction. I think if you want infrastucture Obama should have allowed the Keystone pipeline from Canada all the way through the US. This would have created 100,000 jobs directly and thousands of indirect jobs north to south. And with the addition of oil and gas would have helped all Americans at the pump. What is so wrong with that? The biggest job creator in this country is the small business. By increasing the minimum wage has stopped many small business owners from hiring new employees. I myself would have hired someone for less than the minimum wage, trained them and helped them gain experience to get a promotion to a better paying job. It is things like this that slows growth of jobs. Also, access to financing has stopped many small businesses from expanding and growing. Make financing available. These are the things that should be considered.

I have always had a problem with Republicans being called fiscally conservative. Every time Republicans get in power they lower taxes and the deficit goes through the roof. Look at the record of Reagan and Bush dynasty. They claim that tax cuts pay for themselves by Supply Side Economics but they never do. I don't have a problem with lowering taxes but the conservative thing to do would be to also reduce spending by a nearly equal amount. The problem is they never do that. Despite what the conservatives will tell you our taxes are lower than they have ever been in modern times and the deficit keeps spiraling upwards. I don't think that is a coincidence.

Both parties are guilty of this. The republicans can't stick to their guns because they have to get votes and in the social structure of today, if you are not giving it away, you are not getting the votes. The democrats on the other hand say we need to raise taxes to raise revenue to lower the deficit, but they keep increasing the baseline for the budget because of the before mentioned reasons. I wish we would get a leader, and I do not care which side it comes from, that will stand up and tell our citizens the truth. There are some very difficult decisions that are going to have to be made and it is going to hurt. We have given it all away so you will be happy and vote for us, but the time has come that you are going to have to stand on your own two feet. The coffers are empty and we cannot give it away anymore.

This is my first post on this board (I hang around Around the Shoe but it's slow right now so here I am) and I want to say that I'm not here to start a fight, I just have an honest question for conservatives. Let me say that I'm not a liberal, I'm a moderate and more importantly a pragmatist, meaning liberal or conservative doesn't matter to me as much as effectiveness. Now with that out of the way, here's my question to conservatives:

How do you view the idea that conservatives want to keep the government from intruding into their lives but also want to use the government to impose their own values and moral views on others? To me this looks like an ideology based on hypocrisy, i.e. that the small government that doesn't tax much and keeps its nose out of the lives of conservatives will be used by conservatives to pry into the private lives of groups that conservatives don't approve of or want to keep from gaining too much influence.

Do you, as a conservatives, see this contradiction or do you view it in some other way?

Nope. This post ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ didn't have an agenda! (Where is that sarcasm smiley?)

There is no difference between a pipeline project and infrastructure projects. They both temporarily increase employment. They also create spinoff jobs because of all of the supplies they need to complete the jobs. The pipeline will eventually get built. The problem is the route the pipeline is now proposed to go on goes right over a shallow water aquifer. They are trying to reroute the pipeline around this area. The new oil would not lower gas prices because oil is sold on a world market. That amount of oil is a drop in the bucket. There is all of that oil coming out of the Bakken oil field in North Dakota and oil sand in Canada and gas prices are still going up here because the world oil market is very tight. We are already getting their oil but it is coming by train instead of pipeline.

  • Look at a high level map of the area http://www.centreforenergy.com/FactsStats/MapsNorthAmerica/. There are literally 100's of pipelines already in place. The company already agreed to move it a few miles since it was a big concern. Just another excuse to pander to environmentalist IMO. Project should have been ok'd months ago.

The poblem is to a person that does not affiliate themselves with either side you are the other side of the same partisan coin. It is laughable to read the posts on this. I am right and you are wrong. There is no other way! The truth always lies somewhere in the middle.

  • Even if the pipeline created 100,000 jobs it wouldn't that big of a dent in unemployment. Those jobs would be good but it's not the panacea that some people present it as.

Call the whaaambulance, oh no I said something that isn't in agreement with you so I must be a liberal Democrat. Ridiculous.

What if I said that I can't stand the spineless joke that is the Democratic party? What if I said that I can't stand PETA or the whacko envrionmentalists that sit in trees to stop logging? I believe both of those and that wouldn't jive with being a liberal Democrat.

So are you going to just keep saying the same thing over and over? A true liberal would never vote Republican, which I have in the past, and a true liberal would never support having a strong military as I do. You're reaching for straws because someone doesn't agree with you and criticizes the GOP then they must be a liberal. Major logical fallacy there.

Laughable. I know many Liberals who are in support of a strong Military. heck, some of them are my family members. If that is your way of trying to prove that you are a "moderate", you failed. There are too many of your threads that PROVE what you really are.

I guess if you keep telling yourself the same thing over and over it becomes reality, but as for me just telling me that I'm a liberal over and over won't make me believe it because it's not true. I've had plenty of disagreements over politics with liberals, but I was just bored and decided to comes here and start some threads. I haven't insulted anyone and tried to keep things civil and just asked some honest questions about conservatives. Just because those questions may not present some conservatives in a great light doesn't automatically mean I'm a liberal.

    Being a moderate doesn't mean I can't criticize whoever I feel like.

Yawn, same old same old. You don't know what you are talking about and are making quite a few incorrect assumptions along the way. Like I said earlier, if you want real socialism go to Europe because it doesn't exist here. Socialism in the US only exists as a boogeyman used by people like you who are totally ignorant about politics to scare others.

Job creators? Just who are these mythical creatures, and where were they the 8 years before Obama? When they had everything you say Obama is trying to take from them? Where are the jobs they created? If what conservatives say is true Obama should have inherited a booming economy with 4% unemployment.
