One thing that really annoys me about the far right these days is that they accuse Obama of being a Muslim as if it is some sort of crime. Last time I checked the Constitution specifically states that there can be no religious test for a president, so what's the big deal? If Obama was in fact a Muslim and had a press conference to announce it, there would be nothing conservatives could do but stomp around and be angry because Obama has every right to be whatever religion he likes. It seems to me that the constant accusations of Obama being a Muslim or being from Kenya are nothing more than thinly veiled racism and bigotry because no one ever accused Bush of being from another country and the big difference between he and Obama is that he's white and Obama is black and therefore racists claim he's not a citizen or that he's a Muslim because they know they can't get away with saying that they're pissed because we have a black guy as president. It's really sad that Obama has to make a media event out of going to church because people refuse to believe he's a Christian and even after he does they still refuse to believe it.
Obama has many flaws and people are right to criticize him for his real or perceived failures, but this never-ending religion issue is ridiculous and goes against the very Constitution that so many conservatives claim to love and revere so much. So my question after all of that is, what's the big deal with Obama's religion?

I agree that it really shouldn't matter. Besides a lot of religious extremism comes more from a cultural standpoint imo. For instance if you're a Muslim from Saudi Arabia you're more likely to be violent than if you're from America. And if you want to compare Islam and Christianity they are both somewhat "violent" religions, it's just that Muslims haven't toned down the violence yet. I'd like to think that Islam will mature just like Christianity has. Islam is around 14 centuries old. When Christianity was in it's 14th century of existence they had the crusades so I'm hoping that Islam gets beyond it's violent "phase" I guess you'd call it.

I totally agree. I have some friends who are Muslim. I certainly don't hold them accountable for what happens in the name of Islam in other countries. We have to make sure we attack radical violent Islam and leave the respectable citizens alone.
I laugh at the two smears against Obama simultaneously. One: he's a muslim, Two: he's a friend of radical minister Jeremiah Wright. Are we supposed to forget that you just assailed his form of Christianity, and allow the smear that he's a Muslim at the same time?

Yep, holding all Muslims responsible for all attacks comitted by terrorists is like blaming all Christians for that whacko Christian militia that was arrested recently in Michigan for plotting to kill cops. It's just stupid.

I don't think it's a phase, it's a possibility at all times in all religions, it's just how people use the religion to further their own ends. Many times Christians use their religion to further their goals of greed, violence, etc and the same goes for Muslims, Jews and just about every other religion that is exploited by people. The rise of fundamentalist Islamic terror was prompted by many things, one of which actually wasn't Islam as a religion but much more intertwined with international politics and the realization that countries in the Middle East can't stand up to the West in military terms right now. Islam is just a convenient way to recruit idiot foot soldiers who are far more willing to give their lives because someone told them that they will go to Heaven if they die for the cause. The same thing has happened countless times in Christian and other religious organizations who use their religion to promote violence.
Can't see you post BuckeyeDog!

I know it can't be easy being Muslim in Ohio. I love my home state and think we have some of the best people in all the US, but tolerance isn't one of "our" best virtues. Just reading posts on the Hot Spot will prove that.
BTW I like your pic from USC. I was there at that game, too. So disappointing. I really thought we had a shot and we were blown off the field. One of the handful of games where Tress got totally out coached. USC 2008, USC 2009, UF 2007 are the ones that really stand out in my mind.

Eh, that's humanity for you. Two things stand out in just about all facets of human life throughout history, and that's greed and political expediency. All sorts of otherwise benign or positive ideas can and will be twisted around by someone out of greed or political gain, it's up to the rest of us to not buy into the crap and make sure the fringe groups stay at the fringe, if not things can get nasty.
Looks like I got a couple of downvotes, it would be nice to see the voters explain their reasoning instead of just clicking a button in a cowardly way.

I agree that one's religion should not be open to scruitiny but let's face it, in politics, everything is fair game. I remember the newspapers asking if you, the voter could vote for a Catholic when John Kennedy ran for President. Some were concerned that he would take "orders" from the Vatican. I believe the problems many have with Obama is not just his religion but so many other facets of his life which are, for whatever reasons, unknown. He is not very forthcoming about his academic files including his college grades or papers. Princeton has also sealed Michelle Obama's file. Birthers will always feel they have a case because of so much conflicting information that they feel has not been adequately answered. In the end, it is the Democratic Party which vetted him and submitted Obama as qualified to be a Presidential candidate, so they bear the burden in the future if Obama turns out to be unqualified for the office which he now holds. So, whether he is Muslim or not, there is enough doubt and causes some to wonder what else is there about Obama that might not be what it appears. Religion is the least of his problems and shouldn't be a concern those who support him. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Mitt Romney and to a lesser degree, R. Santorum.
