OBAMA making good on his promise to SHUT down coal power plants.

  • he couldn't get it done with his failed CAP AND TRADE bill.....but is definitly going after them with the EPA...with the new EPA rules....32 mostly coal-fired power plants will shut down and threaten to close 36 others.....EPA has estimated that 14.79 gigiwatts, enough to power 11 million homes will be retired from the power grid in the 2014-2015 period when the new epa rules take affect...what makes everything so fricken stupid is the new rules are asking these plants to put in technology that isn't ready to use yet....and the HITS just KEEP ON COMING........but u can bet that OBAMA and his stooges will make the case that the coal mines are still producing.....but guess what, it is being SHIPPED to CHINA......

  • The older coal plants are going out business anyways. Near me in Buffalo they are shutting down multiple coal plants because they are so inefficient that they aren't profitable to run. The old coal plants can't compete with plants that are run on natural gas.

  • This is also an attack on the Midwest. Look at the democratic and energy leadership of obama's administration. They won't be happy until half of your income is going to energy and that it has to be manufactured in California.

  • We are going through this were I work . The coal fired steam plant I do work at time to time is feeling the squeezing . First they tried to burn paper pellets , oh but wait there's plastic it the paper pellets not good that's a whole new set of EPA regulations and the plastic is worse then the coal , lol . The School just spent 3 million cleaning this plant up and for nothing with these new regs .. just blows me away ...

  • If you care for your children or future generations, you should be supporting the move away from coal fired plants. The evidence is overwhelming that the polution from coal-fired plants is poisoning the air, creating many health problems, and inflicting a huge financial burden.

Yes there is a cost to switch to natural gas or nuclear or other fuels. I am more than willing to pay that cost if it means the air I breathe is much clearner and our society doesn't have to deal wtih so many health issues caused by the polution, (and the immense cost to deal with those issues).

Wow, another misinformed post from the 24/7 ragman. What a surprise! sarcasm

Since you did not cite a source, not sure what you got wrong from your own ignorance and what your source had wrong.

The "old" coal plants were on their way out anyway. The plans for these "new" standards have been in the making for more than two decades. The shipping of coal to China has kept the price of coal high while the sharp decline in natural gas and the lower demand for electricity have combined so that the price of running the old plants is no longer economically feasible.

As usual you manage to get wrong and/or distort all real facts. For your edification:

"Old Coal Plants Shift Blame As Well As Costs
Pollution rules aren't closing coal power plants."

Oh, I almost forgot - once again you have your "S" in the wrong place. On your posts it is actually:

"and the SHIT just KEEP ON COMING..."

Though often asked, God does not take sides in politics or college football.

you're right about the S, expecially when u talk about OBAMA is doing to this country.......and what about the EPA putting specs. but the technology isn't even there yet for the coal power plants to use them....

I don't believe that the EPA set specs beyond the tech - but I would be glad to respond if you would provide a link to the source you got that from.

  • I don't have a problem with shutting down coal fired plants.. but shouldn't we wait until an alternative energy source is actually available? How will we meet the energy loss from all of these coal fired plants being shut down? I think minsterbuckeye is right... It will be interesting to see the price of electricity this Summer..

My major concern is this.. We need cheap electricity so we can get off Oil. The benefit this country would see from importing no Oil, and not spending 80 billion a year on defending the strait of Hormuz, would be huge.

My suggestion would be to build Nuclear, build Wind Farms, build anything but natural gas plants and save that for heating and new transportation fuels.

Here's a source for EPA specs, Tim.

    By John Kemp

(Reuters) - Proposed emission rules for new power plants unveiled by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on March 27 spell the gradual demise of coal-fired power generation and entrench the current cost advantage for natural gas.

The agency's proposed rule, signed yesterday, would set a standard well within the capability of modern gas-fired plants but impossible for coal-fired units to meet unless they employ (unproven) carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.

  • You stupid idiot...Obama is from Chicago! Thats the midwest jackass. What a bunch of easily manipulated and fearful morons. You had a president who started a war for no reason and resulting in the deaths of 5000 troops, 40,000 wounded, and bankrupted our country, and killed 100,000 innocent men woman children, and you are on Obama. Wow...the guy who killed Bin Laden! The only explanation is that you are all fearful bigot. Dont matter, you have lost the battle. You cant win an election without the hispanics and women and neither of those groups are gonna vote stupid....lol..Its over guys!

Wow. What a horrible post. Speaking of easily manipulated your argument on energy is that bush started a war? Way to describe your political influences as those entirely by one person instead of making your own decisions issue by issue.

Obama is from Chicago, but a large part of his energy posts and democrat leadership is from California. This is not obamas direct doing and this move in general is not a huge deal as mentioned. Energy costs in the us are relatively low right now due to natural gas being in abundance, but the lack of actions on oil are starting to show an increase that will hurt the country economically. We need to start to invest in other energy sources and making them economically viable but the fact that most of current use is Midwest driven - including more and more natgas everyday - is a reason for part of the policies of the current government.

And I disliked bush more than Obama so not sure what hat has to do with anything.

Now, if I recall correctly one of the big selling points of nuclear power was that electricity was going to be so inexpensive!

Gee, then many of the plants got privately owned (oh, excuse me - owned by "holding companies" - have to keep things at arms length, you know)

How did that work out for ya?

good ! Now spend some money on education so people (slaves) in WV dont have to work/ live in those conditions. How about funding solar technology training people working in those shitty conditions and improving everyones quality of life.

Correct. Solar will definitely work and is already competitive vs coal during peak times in California.
