Rick Santorum and Contraception

  • Is it true Rick Santorum has 8 children? And he's been married for over 20 years? And he has had intercourse with his wife 8 times? Because I know this because Rick Santorum doesn't believe incontraception. He told us so. He said it was evil. Because someone should ask Rick Santorum if he ever had sex with his wife and wasn't trying to get her to conceive? I think that's a fair question. Funny how Cons want the government out of schools and other business but they are OK with peeping in our bedrooms.

Sorry to shoot a hole in your clever little diatribe, but for many years devout Catholics have practiced what's called the rhythm method. Look it up. Catholics aren't asked to abstain from sex, but practice a form of natural birth control by having sex only when a woman is likely to be incapable of conceiving - probably why he has so many kids. Since it's less than perfect there's even an old Catholic joke that goes something like this:

Question: "What do you call Catholic couples who practice the rhythm method?"

    Answer: "Parents"

    http://www.contracept.org/rhythm.php

"You're only young once, but you can always be immature."

So very true. They want to control your life through their religious text. They remind me a lot of those people we are fighting in Afghanistan.

I am Catholic and have tried the rhythm method. My wife didn't like my selection of music. Oooh well no

Dave, let me unequivocally state as a conservative that I am an enormous proponent of liberals using contraception at every opportunity... I think we may just have the answer for eliminating the deficit.

A woman can conceive even during her period.... Rhythm is an epic fail.... BTW, I'm Catholic.... Most Catholic females today use contraceptives of some type... not rhythm....

As a liberal I can agree with you on deficits...The conservatives have been dealing with them much more than us...hence their lack of a need for contraceptives.lol

I'm not sure if you understand this or not but worrying about deficits only when it's not falling squarely on the shoulders of your guys is not a good way of eliminating the deficit.

Thus the joke.....and one of the reasons for the term "cafeteria" Catholics. Most Catholics these days want to pick and choose the parts of the religion they adhere too - I'm not passing judgement, but this has been one of the shortcomings of the Catholic church for quite a while.

Hey, pal, Santorum has stated his own views on the issue and also indicated that he would not act to make his views law. Why are Mario Cuomo and other Democrat Catholics lauded by leftists for their similar stance on a much more important public issue (abortion, which involves the destruction of life), and Santorum ridiculed? I know, consistency, logic and moral sanity are too much to ask of any truly committed leftist. Enjoy your time in dreamland.

People like you are the true totalitarians. Obama has shown his and the left's true colors by attempting to force religious institutions to act in contravention of their religious beliefs. I just wish people like you would actually go to Afghanistan and find out what it's like to be on the receiving end of totalitarianism. It's fine for you to shove your beliefs down everyone's throats, but woe to the person that raises his voice to say that your precious sexual license is morally reprehensible.

And if libs stop having bowel movements, there will be no more conservatives.

Save your fingers, after calling me a dick and telling me to shove it up my old wrinkled ass, you have already showed what a hypocrite you are when it comes to class and grossness.

Why is this even a topic? This is America and if you want to use contraception go ahead. If you don't that is fine too. The real issue is Obama has driven this country into terrible debt and has run a poor economy. Let's get focused on something that really matters.

You mean the Catholic hospitals which take billions of dollars in taxpayer dollars a year? Those that compete with secular hospitals but want to pick and choose what rules they will follow? Once they take a dollar of taxpayer money, they should be teated like any other hospital. Separation of church and state does not allow churches to refuse to follow laws, etc. which are passed for everyone to follow. Show me that right, to refuse to follow a general law or legal policy in the Constitution.

You have it backwards, it is the religious dogmatists who want in our bedrooms and in a woman's vagina (new vaginal ultra-sound in Virginia before a woman can terminate her pregnancy) who are trying to shove their beliefs down everyone else's throat. You have every right to be against contraceptives, gay marriage, and abortions. But you have no right to try to impose your religious beliefs on other.

This is coming from the political party that would love to be able to insert religion into our government. Hell even your post smacks of that. It was about available contraception, Obama and the Catholics have moved on. Only the Religious Right is trying to make political hay out of it. You don't even see yourselves as the party that would be the totalitarian religious government if you could get away with it. You are the ones who have always tried to insert your beliefs into the lives of people and to tell them what to do. A woman's body is her own business. Quit trying to make this out to be Obama vs. Christians when it's Republicans vs. women..

I know of only one Presidential candidate who is consistently talking about those issues, and it isn't one of the GOP clowns who have no answers, save to repeat "Obama is bad for the country" and "I can do better." Where's the beef?

Every Presidential election we get every GOP candidate using wedge issues like guns, gays, abortion, religion, etc., and now contraception. This serves two purposes for them. First, they know that if they mention just one of those inane issues they will appeal to at least half of the Republican base. Second, it is to hide the fact that they never have a plan, let alone talk about one. It has always been thus.

  • I'm a conservative that believes that the government should stay the hell out of social issues. I want freedom to make money and keep it(low taxes small government). But just as I'm free to make money and keep it . Smaller government means I should also be free to use birth control, get an abortion (till the medical community recognizes it as murder) smoke marijuana, marry who I want (man or woman) and whatever else the religious fanatics want to control. The republican party bows to the religious fanatics and thats why this country is f'd up.
They should be working on economic policy not playing in what I do with the rest of my life. So whoever the republican nominee is, the first time he mentions god ,religion or abortion he will have lost my vote. I'll pay higher taxes to keep the government out of my life.

It's not "separation of church and state," it's the establishment clause and the free exercise clause of the first amendment. And for your information, a constitutional doctrine long recognized by the Supreme Court is that the government cannot condition the receipt of a benefit on the recipient's reliniquishment of a constitutional right. So, the fact that the government has the power of the purse does not authorize it to condition the receipt of funds on someone violating his/her free exercise rights. You and other leftists would do well to educate yourself a bit about the Constitution before venting--but again, asking someone like you to express an informed opinion (particularly about the Constitution) is likely an impossible demand.

This issue has nothing to do with the left's paranoid shibboleth of religious people invading your bedroom (who would be interested in any event? Revulsion is the most likely emotional response). Contraception is readily available throughout the United States--so your ability to carry out your sexual escapades is not impeded by religious organizations that refuse to provide it out of their own religious convictions and respect for life. In your zeal to advance your own misguded agenda, however, you would be glad to force others to do what they believe is unethical. Who is the real totalitarian? Some friendly advice may serve you well. Instead of worrying about your bedroom so much and spewing your bigotry on here, you would do well to occupy your mind and efforts on other activities. It would improve your psychological profile and mental outlook, among other things.

I've got news for you, pal. The wedge issues have become so because of the politicization of American society that was the result of the activities of the "New Left" in the 1960s. Since these issues arose because of your ilk, you can hardly properly complain if someone responds to the nonsense you espouse. But once again, asking someone like you to see the eminent fairness in people responding to issues that you and your kind have raised is likely way too much to ask.
