I don't like religion and I don't think it's bad... why do you think I would? The church helps a lot of disadvantaged kids and has good schools with scholarships....

Some people (not necessary you) want to crush God and religion in our lives. Remove Him and Church from our lives altogether. Period, no questions asked.

I honestly don't think most of the Atheists and Agnostics on here want to crush God and religion...I think they want to have a voice and say what they feel...private schools are private...I don't think they want to get rid of all private schools... I think they have a concern about children around priests and that's a sensible healthy way to think IMO... Nothing wrong with using caution where children are concerned...

It's bad because more kids out of public schools the less they can indoctrinate with Left Wing ideology. Plus, in private schools they will actually be educated, not be spoon fed liberal agenda. Plus, no teachers union to collect dues from to give to Democratic politicians.

i dont see what that has to do with religion but as an athiest i dont "hate god" there is simply nothing there to dislike. i think religion can be beneficial on a personal level but i dont think it is progressive in the grand scheme of things.

Don't really have a problem with this. High School kids should have already developed their core beliefs by that age. It isn't like they are opening an elementary school for the underprivleged so that they can get some young kids and indoctrinate them. Either way, it is a private enterprise and they are free to do what they want.

As to a general distaste for it, you might be able to see it if you replaced 'Catholic' with any religion you tend to disagree with. What if it was a Celtic group opening a Pagan school for poor people? Would there be any objection to that?

That's an interesting point that you bring up, 'instead of Catholic, insert religion here.' I never really thought of it that way except there are other private schools that might be Lutheran or just your everyday Academies that don't have any religious affiliation. In my mind, as long as the school was putting out kids that are educated/graduate/go to college, I think people would be ok with it.

2nd thought. There are a number of small town, public schools that have religion classes during the school day. Some on campus, some off campus but during the school day.

I think it should be available for kids to be able to choose where they get their education, public or private. Out gov't spends all kinds of money everyday on crap, wouldn't it make sense to actually spend money on educating our kids? Giving the kids and their parents a choice to be able to send them to a private school where statistically they get a better education, graduate at higher rates, go to college at higher rates?

Why is it that Republicans cry foul when there are not enough private academies for kids that want to get away from public schools, its free to these children but whine and bitch when the same clientele get welfare and food stamps.

On your second thought, I'd have to see how it was being taught to form an opionion on it. I have no problem teaching the histories of different religions in public schools. I have issue with any public institution advocating for a particular religion.

Valid point. If it were a school based on Scientology, I probably wouldn't have started the thread.

It's still freedom of choice for the parents and students. It's people trying to help other people without government in efforts to provide a greater good.

Its a pleasure to talk to people that use reason and can see others points of veiw without getting defensive. I agree it is a freedom of choice thing and more power to both parties. However, if it were just about people helping other people, then they could do it without the religious trapping. The help comes with a price. Part of Catholic school includes attending mass, partaking in a religion class, and many other religious activities. Let's face it, they do things like this to gain new Catholics. I am familiar with Catholic schools and realize that they accept people from different religions, and even atheists into their schools. But, they are still expected to respect the religion of the school and partake in the religion classes and special activities.

A lot of small communities, who have a large percentage of one religion, do this and teach about one particular religion as a religion class. The parents and community support it so they keep doing it. Why not?

If you want to go to a private school you have to accept the things that go along with it, whatever religion it is. The biggest thing that people need to understand is it's a choice to go to a private school. If you don't like that school, you don't have to go. Hence my previous post about choice to go or not.

You say "trapping", I prefer "glorifying".

    BTW... I'm not Catholic.

EDIT: Thanks for the kinds words.
