Why no nuclear power?

  • Why are we not exploring this more as a country.

  • Go ask Japan

  • Japan built one on the water with half of the wave protection than ever. Because Japan ignored what they shoul have done we are not going to produce any more?
I really don't get this. More people die during coal and oil excavation than have died in the us from nuclear. The biggest issue in the us resulted in no deaths and radiation leaks equal to an X-ray. The movie may have been the worst thing about it. I don't know too much about it economically but the safety concerns don't show reason to me.

  • Were getting ready to build a few here in the near future . As long as the EPA stays out of the way .
Obama said so. Lol. If you can believe that .

  • I believe there are 3 or 4 plants that have approval to be built. The new design for nuclear power plants is far safer than the old designs. They have passive cooling designs that cool down automatically without human intervention or they need for electricity. The problem with nuclear energy is it requires a huge amount of capital up front which makes them very expensive. They have to pay huge financing costs for around 3 years before the things are even operational. I personally would much rather we put our subsidies towards nuclear energy than wind and solar.

  • The industry is moving towards smaller moduler nuclear reactors that can be built quickly, which will keep the financing costs under control. Now they require huge containement domes which take forever to build and cost a fortune.

  • In February 2012, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved the construction license of the two proposed reactors at the Vogtle plant.

On August 18, 2011, the TVA board of directors voted to move forward with the construction of the unit one reactor at Bellefonte.[124] But as of March 2012, many contractors have been laid off and the ultimate cost and timing for Bellefonte 1 will depend on work at another reactor TVA is completing - Watts Bar 2 in Tennessee. In February 2012, TVA said the Watts Bar 2 project was running over budget and behind schedule.[125]

According to a 2012 Pew Research Center poll, 44 percent of Americans favor and 49 percent oppose the promotion of increased use of nuclear power

We can't even decide ourselves if we want it..I think alot of people want one as long as its not in their backyard..well someone has to have it in their backyard so.....

I am big on Science things so I want as many as we can have safely of course..thats fine..but build em up...but If people don't support it when it comes to their Town, City and / or State....Well

I keep talking politics on Buckeye boards..Imma take a break..lol but that was just my thoughts on it..

  • ^^^So what did the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission do before August of 2011 in the last 20 years? ha

I'm 100% for building Nuclear power plants. When 3 mile Island melted, it took a bad rap for everyone. As did the Japan meltdown, where literally everything that could go wrong, did.

According to the Reg. Commission website. Only 3 reactors have been active less than 20 years. 48 in the 20-29 year range. 46 in the 30-39 year range. And 7 have been active for over 40 years (amazing to me). That means our Nuclear power plants are aging and we haven't built to many of them in the last 20 years. Even then, the 104 reactors produce 19.6% the total energy for the country in 2008, not sure what it would be now.

The biggest thing is the waste leftover. There isn't any current good ideas on where to put it or how to recycle in into usuable material.

  • I am a Nuke...it comes down to politics and public misinformation. We lead the WORLD in Nuclear Technology and don't use it. What a shame. For the fear mongers that say "look at Japan, Russia, etc" those were the absolute worst and archaic designs ever. I would have to teach a nucler power 101 course to explain but the US uses a system where it takes operators to keep them running. They will shut themselves down based on the physics not to mention the multitude of safety interlocks. Oh, and the vast majority of the personnel that run Nuclear Power in the United States come from the United States Navy. Oh yeah them. We are talking cream of the crop that have been running nuclear power ships and submarines since the 60's without an accident. Russia's Navy?....well not so much.

  • George Bush had a lot to do with getting the nuclear energy industry back on its feet. They quit building them for 20 years because each design was different and had to get regulatory approval which took forever. Now the designs have to be standardized and approved ahead of time so it makes the process quicker. Having standardized designs makes them cheaper to build because the parts can come from an assembly line instead of having to be custom built. Bush also provided a bunch of money for loan guarantees that make financing nuclear energy much more feasible.

Yea God forbid someone looks out for our safety! Remember the oil spill in the gulf. We got one in Phoenix you can have, my rates just keep going up.
