Why we need a strong military

  • With spending cuts one of our current big issues, lots of people talk about cutting the military as being either useless or overbloated and overfunded. While of course there are inefficiencies within the military (especially in the bidding process), I don't see how anyone can realistically think that a weak military will help the country. While I don't think we need 50,000 nukes like some people do, we do need enough to put a gun to the head of just about everyone in the world if we need to because that's sadly how international politics works.

So what does everyone think about this? I'm just really bored at work right now and decided to start another thread.

Isn't our nuclear count less than 10% of your figure?

Yeah it's nothing near 50,000 (the Soviets in the 70s and 80s actually had around that many) but I was just saying that some people want us to have a huge amount of nukes.

    Who?

I distinctly remember Bush talking and actually trying to build more and when Obama downsized the arsenal a while back a lot of Republicans got pissed and said we needed more not less.

Just because the Defense Dept. gets less money doesn't mean it weakens our defense.

Let's apply that to the Department of Education, EPA, National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), EEOC, NLRB... "Less money doesn't mean these entities will be weaker" according to Dave so he should be all for it (I know I am).
