5-Star safety Vonn Bell (Rossville, Ga./Ridgeland) announced moments ago at a ceremony at his high school that he has selected Ohio State over Tennessee and Alabama giving Urban Meyer a huge National Signing Day victory.
In Bell the Buckeyes have landed the country's No. 3 safety prospect.
"I will be attending the Ohio State University," Bell said at his announcement.
Bell made official visits to all three schools in a recruiting tug of war that pitted the Buckeyes against two SEC schools including the school Bell grew up rooting for – Tennessee.
The 6-foot-0 and 180-pound Bell formed a great relationship with Meyer which was one of the keys as Bell decided to head north to play his college football. Ohio State assistant coach Everett Withers also played an important part in recruiting Bell to OSU.
"Urban Meyer is on a mission right now to win a national championship," Bell said. "You see this year he went 12-0 with his guys he didn't even recruit this year. He's been a winner wherever he goes."
Bell led his team to the state championship game during his senior season and a final record of 13-2. He made 131 tackles with three interceptions. Bell also rushed for 1,050 yards with 21 touchdowns. Meyer and Withers have talked with Bell about perhaps seeing some time at wide receiver in addition to playing safety for the Buckeyes.
Now Bell is headed north to help the Buckeyes stop the run of national titles for the SEC.
"You know it's a big risk, but you want to do something special," Bell said. "We all put our heads together. We all put the family together and we'll get on a bus ride up there to get this thing done."
Bell is the country’s No. 3 safety prospect in the 247Sports rankings. In addition to being the country’s No. 3 safety, Bell is the country’s No. 29 overall prospect and the No. 4 prospect in Georgia.
Bell joins an Ohio State recruiting class that was already ranked No. 2 in the country in the 247Sports rankings.
